A monarch butterfly finds the bright flowers of a lantana plant to its liking near downtown Durham. Some butterflies are very specific about where they lay their eggs. Monarchs will only lay their eggs on milkweeds. Milkweeds contain a potent heart poison, which helps to protect them from browsing animals and leaf-eating insects such grasshoppers.
When the first eye on H. 'Fair Maiden' unfurled, it had a small scape growing. The scape is barely above the leaves as all the eyes open.

Long-scaped Isotome
"Erect, basally rosetted annual, herb, 0.05-0.15 m high. Fl. blue/purple, Sep to Dec. Sandy & clayey soils. Winter-wet swampy flats, saline depressions, edges of salt lakes, sand dunes."
A caterpillar that is the larva of the Black Swallowtail butterfly rests and munches on the stem of a fennel plant in a garden in northern Durham County.
