Scale-A-Week: 19 November 2017

Revell 1/24th Scale Routemaster London Double Decker Bus Build. No sides yet, they are primered and ready for the red to be done. So far the parts are fitting really good. Just all test fitting the front and rear plus the roof. More detail is needed for the wheel areas and maybe more chrome. We will see.

Little bit wrong with size of the scale =)

They took much less time than the bottom scales. The legs were also easier to collaps, go figure.

If only I could time-travel back to 2006, I would have stocked up on the small scale Sigma 6 G.I. Joe vehicles. I loved that line, and I have most of the larger 8 inch figures, but I skipped most of the smaller vehicles. I am kicking myself now that I can see that there is not a lot of difference between the 3 inch Sigma 6 figures, and the 2 inch MiniMates.

Not only were there a number of vehicles that came out that would work for pretty close scale, but there were also a couple of Mechas. And, since Mechas are a made-up vehicle, the size can be off for the scale to still work. In this case, the Iron Hammer is a great example. It is a big vehicle that can fit into the scenes with the MiniMates. Better yet, it has a cockpit that can fit a MiniMate. That can't always happen with the strange dimensions of MiniMates, but when it works, you do NOT want to pass it up.

Interestingly, there were a lot of vehicles from Sigma 6 that were repurposed into the standard 3 3/4 inch G.I. Joe line. So, if they can go up in scale, I can go down in scale. That means, keep your eyes out for other vehicles that fit the bill. If they are not a standard vehicle, they may very well fit into scale.

Aside: I was having fun today, since I made 6 more explosions, I wanted to see if I could make it look like the windows were being blown out of the building. I also made a smoke trail for a missile. I think they are very convincing, and I am looking forward to my next project. What that is, I don't know yet, but I am sure it will be fun.

Tor Dike is a linear earthwork about 2000 metres long situated across a valley head guarding access from Upper Wharfedale into Coverdale.

Reputably built by the Brigantine Chief Venutius in the first century A.D.

This alternative explanation of the dike is taken from Whittaker’s History of Craven. In 1410 Ralph, Earl of Westmoreland, was granted a licence by Henry IV to enclose 300 acres by Kettlewell. Ralph was a Neville and owned Middleham Castle. Whittaker writes “this is the origin of Scale Park, now divided into two enclosures and so-called from a long and steep ascent within it from Craven to Coverdale”. Walking along the eastern escarpment it is clear that the whole area is a natural enclosure except at the Northern end. The dyke was dug to complete the enclosure and connect the steep Eastern and Western valley sides.

HO scale in town building

This is an HO scale model of one of VIA's distinctive Panorama single-level glass-roofed cars, specifically 1720. The three cars in VIA's roster were originally built by Colorado Railcar for BC Rail, used on the Whistler Northwind. When purchased by VIA, they received this unique paint scheme, and the numbers 1720, 1721 and 1722.

1720 is unique, because it has a galley at one end - this results in a different window arrangement from the other cars, with 9 full windows on each side (rather than the 10 on one side, 9 and a half on the other that 1721 and 1722 have).

I kitbashed this model using the underframe and ends from a Rapido CC&F lightweight coach, and the window section cut from a Bachmann Ultradome. I made the sides from styrene, and scratcbuilt many of the other components. I also found ways to re-use many of the small bits from the other cars. The diaphragms are Rapido LRC diaphragms.

The patterns on the sides were carefully masked by hand before painting (a very tedious job!).
