As the new year approaches, I thought it would be time for another forced perspective shot of Ruby, my 1/18th scale model 1930 Alfa Romeo parked by the bird pond in our retirement village. She will be 95 years old in the new year - older than most of the residents in the retirement village here!

Ruby looks great from any angle, but the rear view highlights many little details including the instruments on the dashboard which feature real metal chromed surrounds and actual glass faces over the dials. Those wonderful spoke wheels are all removable by undoing the spinner lock. She has real rubber Pirelli branded tyres (tires), and they even feature an air valve - a tiny detail I have not found on many of my other model cars of this scale.

What really stands out for me is the fact that back then (the 1930s) they had the wisdom to include two spare wheels. I know roads would have been rougher back then and tyre quality would not have been as good as today's modern tyres, but it is a stark reminder that these days we are lucky if we get any spare wheel at all. You might get a space saver if you are lucky - most of which can only be used on the rear - but the current trend is to give you a can of spray (useless if you get a gash in the sidewall of the tyre). All so they can save weight to meet fuel efficiency standards.

Most people are probably lucky enough to go through their motoring lives without ever having a puncture, but somehow, I have managed to have at least 50 since I started driving 45 years ago. Give me a full size spare tyre any day. Space savers and repair kits are only good for around 80km before you must find a dealer and have the tyre properly repaired. Fine if you live in a city and are near dealers who can help, but hopeless for rural folks who may be a long way from any tyre retailer or may be on an overnight journey.

The moral of the story from car manufacturers (and government regulators) today is - "please get a flat tyre in cities or towns only, and preferably during business hours.....we have graciously included this advice for your convenience!"

End of rant - I feel better now! ; )

A lovely mild but cloudy day was perfect for a spin in Ziggy, our AC Cobra roadster. Here, she is parked at Beachport on South Australia's Limestone coast, with a couple of hopeful silver gulls admiring the shiny car, and hoping its owners would throw them an unwanted chip from their lunch.

This shot is from inside Maghull Library on Merseyside looking out over into its courtyard and onto a G-Scale model railway which is presently being constructed.

Maghull's most famous resident was legendary toy-maker Frank Hornby lived there for much of his adult life. The Town's Leisure Centre houses Maghull Library and above it the Frank Hornby Heritage Centre that's run by the Frank Hornby Charitable Trust. The Trust and Sefton Council's Library Service are working together to theme Maghull Library along Hornby/Meccano/model railway lines and the outdoor model railway pictured is a part of a Lottery-funded project being promoted by Sefton Libraries.

Like the X-Wing model uploaded earlier, this is an oldie from the bottom of a cardboard box filled with childhood scale models. I ran into this today as I cleared a couple of shelves in the basement.

This is a Monogram model I got with great expectations after the wonderful X-Wing. I was so disappointed when I found out that this was a very, very simple model which had no pilot nor a cockpit, just the canopy with black decals for windows. Also, the kit had no orange stripe decals for the bottom, only top. Maybe that's why I was a bit more adventurous with the matchstick weathering. I wanted this to look mean, so, pushing the envelope, the matchstick flame melted the plastic here and there during the process. The damage actually looks allright now (not really visible from this angle), this one just looks battered, as if it's seen a lot of interstellar action.

Ah yes, back in the day, for many Aussies, the mighty Holden Kingswood name was in many driveways alongside the equally popular Ford Falcon. These two family sedans, and all their variants ruled the roost way before SUV was a term. This is the "Sandman" panel van variant of the Holden Kingswood HJ, looking great in its custom dark grey metallic paintjob. A Holden Kingswood Sandman panel van even featured in the original Mad Max movie, and of course, the Kingswood name went on to feature on an Australian Sitcom called Kingswood Country which ran from 1980 to 1984.

This is just a fun little 1/24th scale model plastic toy I found online recently and I got it just for novelty value. It is made by DDA, a company that usually specialises in the more traditional metal die-cast models, and is still very accurately modelled on the original. One of its great little features is the working LED headlights and tail-lights. I'm sure this car, and its sedan variant will be appearing a little more in a driveway near me night or day in some future shots!

Here's Bandai's fantastic 1/144 scale U-wing, completed in my own custom scheme/livery.

This is also one of the first models I have completed in a long, long time.

My other past time, this is a 1/72 F-89D Scorpion. It was a cold war interceptor that used 102 folding fin rockets in each wingtip pod to spray 2 inch buckshot at bombers. Revell kit I had for years that I decided to make based on the high visibility paint scheme.

I usually display vegetal chair's pictures on the doors of the cabinet in the living room. This pair( real sized and 1:6 scaled cabinets) makes me happy, and here is a newcommer beside the cabinet.

An F1 car and a McLaren F1, which the rear is basically same as my previous F1 moc last year, so this will be given free to those who purchased my previous build. All the goodies had went into building a decent F1, so the other F1 is a bit underwhelming.

This is a 1:48 scale model of one of the largest hydraulic mining excavators in the world. This machine has been previously known as Terex O&K RH400 and Bucyrus RH400, and currently it is called Caterpillar 6090 FS. However, the model uses the preceding Bucyrus livery.

The model has the following remotely controlled electric functions:

→ Propulsion;

→ Slewing;

→ Boom operation and opening of bucket;

→ Rotating cooling fans;

→ Folding ladder;

→ Retractable service station;

→ Lighting.

The model has a remotely controlled gearbox which distributes motor power between two sets of functions.

The scale of the model is minifigure compatible.

After lots of updates, trials and errors, sweat and tears (not really), here's my LEGO version of the legendary Ferrari Testarossa.

To be honest I wasn't fully satisfied with the results of my previous Testarossa model, the 512 TR, I decided to build the older version with better proportions to the real thing, at the scale of 1:16, including opening doors, hood, trunk and removable engine.

There are lots of reasons to love Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn: The donut shop, the independent Toy Store and the overall “mom and pop shop” feel that emanates from a morning stroll down its sidewalks. Additionally, spanning the blocks, there is a wide variety of architecture to be found. This amazing building was overlooked by me on my many trips there. It is located just past the intersection of Bedford and Manhattan Avenues where I would typically turn to walk down Bedford. An account I follow on IG, @bkbybike posted a photo of this building earlier this year and I was instantly smitten. The overall color palette as well as the detailed bay windows reeled me in. Additionally, a barber/coffee shop calls ground floor its home. A very big thanks to @bkbybike for continuing to inspire my IG feed with amazing buildings like this one. Enjoy!
