The City of Richmond is entirely surrounded by water and as such, Richmond’s flood protection system is crucial to the City’s well-being. The City operates and maintains 39 drainage pumps stations with a total of 110 pumps that have a combined operating capability of pumping over 1 million Gallons Per Minute.

This system can be operated through the City’s SCADA system and is monitored on a 24/7 basis.

We found a spot where the road went over a small river and a track let us near the river. It was a very good spot for butterflies in the poor weather.

One of my favourite clearwings from the trip. Not that common but not rare either.

It was replaced around 2010 by the computerised SCADA system.

Walking down Amato Road one night, I passed this door which opens into Southern California Edison's downtown Palm Springs substation. Any idiot, such as myself, can read and photograph the sign posted by Edison.

Opinion: Edison does a good job with their transmission and distribution. They also have high rates because this level of service is costly. For example, if some 12,000-volt transmission line shorts out, Edison immediately dispatches a trouble car to go see what's happening. Other utilities wait for a bunch of grumpy customers to call in and report their power is out. Monitoring SCADA and having trouble people available to respond is expensive. Their service area goes from Fresno to the San Diego County line. I'm out here in the hinterlands where there are often high winds. Overall, there are few power outages.

I think part of being a participant in democracy is having a literacy in utilities. That includes having a basic understanding of how rate cases are developed and how the California Public Utilities Commission oversees utilities.

A senior manager …told us, 'Part of the [electric grid] control room experience is to know when not to follow procedures. …There are bad days when a procedure doesn't cover it, and then you have to use your wits.'

I like ankle socks, lol.

I found out today I have to go to Oklahoma City. I booked my flight to today. Work is sending me there for 1 week. I will be installing a Windows Server 2008 64-bit system with the latest version of our SCADA software. Lots of fun to be had, lol.

More butterflies seen at this good spot beside the main road fairly early on this final morning in this part of Panama.

This was a fairly uncommon clearwing and a particularly appealing one to me. Both photos are ventral views.

I did have a dorsal photo earlier on the trip but it was out of focus.

A clearwing I think though the wings are not transparent.

At over 295 feet (90 meters) the mega yacht Athena is not only a huge three masted schooner, she is one of the largest privately owned sailboats in the world. Built by the Royal Huisman boat yard in Holland, this enormous boat was designed by Pieter Beeldsnijder to combine traditional schooner style with modern sailboat technologies. Although weighing in at 1,126 tons, this gargantuan yacht regularly travels at an impressive speed of 18 knots under sail.Built for entrepreneur Jim Clark (Silicon Graphics and Netscape) the mega yacht Athena sports one of the best media lounges found on the high seas, in a bridge-deck penthouse with all the latest gadgetry to watch one of the thousands of DVDs kept in the film library. Another of the notable gadgets used in the sailboat is the SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system used to monitor and provide up to 2,600 alarms for all the yacht's technical systems, helping to assure safety and efficiency while under sail. Apparently it's for sale -- $95 million and it's yours!! Photographed at the Inner Harbour in Victoria BC Canada.

3 more butterflies seen not far from the first bridge on my way back to the lodge.

This is another totally new species to me and one I like a lot.
