The new year offers many opportunities. For example, you can learn to play a new musical instrument, like a saxophone. Is really a great instrument!

A macro view of the keys on a vintage Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone (circa 1957), taken for the Macro Mondays group theme, "Music." The frame represents a span of two-inches across.

Strobist/technical info:

The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights, CL/CR, fired in Manual mode @ ¼ power through Neewer 24" soft boxes. The speedlights were triggered by PockWizard Plus Xs.

Lens: Tokina AT - X M100 AF PRO D (AF 100mm f / 2.8 Macro).

523 smoke pictures later ... I landed on this for our Macro Monday challenge. When I finally figured out that the thicker the candle wick, the better the smoke and that two wicks were even better I was already more than 400 pictures in with various backgrounds and lighting. To me it looks like music rising out of a horn .. a little soft jazz.

I try to not take photos of people but I saw this guy playing a sax from across the street so I zoomed in and took his photo. I hope that is okay. :D

"The saxophone is an imperfect instrument, especially the tenor and soprano, as far as intonation goes. The challenge is to sing on an imperfect instrument that is outside of your body." - Stan Getz

Professional is professional

And speaking of saxophones. From 1979 to 1995 I illustrated the record reviews for Audio Magazine. This was used for one of the reviews, unfortunately I don't know the record. That tear sheet is in a box in the back of a closet.

Update: I had also posted this on my Facebook page and a friend found that there is a link to every issue of Audio Magazine. I found the review in the December 1983 issue. The review was for: Glazunov: Saxophone Quartet; Dubois:

Quartet; Bozza: Andante and Scherzo. Netherlands Saxophone Quartet.

Toronto based Alison Au is one of the top sax players in Canada. She won 2017 Montreal Jazz Festival TD Grand Prix de Jazz in addition to awards she won prior and after. Ostara project toured with some of the best jazz artist in Canada. These are all leaders, composers, songwriters and Montreal was last stop on this year tour. Some live on the West Coast and some live in the East, so getting together was a challenge. Here Toronto's Alison Au reacts to the amazing vocalisation of Shruti. There are more musicians involved, but in Montreal these women were on stage:

Jodi Proznick – Bass

Amanda Tosoff – piano, keyboard

Laila Biali – vocals and piano/ keys

Rachel Therrien – trumpet

Allison Au – saxophone

Valérie Lacombe – drums

Shruti Ramani – vocals

The sun was hardly visible at that day. In front of the central station of Brussels, he was offering a street concert. For a very short moment the sun came out and backlit the saxophone playing man.
