Pune, India:

Not one beautiful building in this photo, and this is one of the nicer areas in this city.

There is a building boom in pune. The papers are full of ads for houses and new buildings, which are advertised as luxury apartments. We passed one such building yesterday, it looked like chicken cages stacked one on top of another till it reached a few stories high. And the building ironically enough was called 'comfort zone' I think.

This is what the builder lobby here thinks is good architecture _ concerete shoe boxes built without any thought for design, provision of water or an adequate drainage system. And by god, are these buildings ugly! The builder lobby of pune would not know the meaning of aesthetics if you go by the buildings they have built. They sell these shoeboxes as if they were shoes and shirts or bikes.

I was watching an episode of 'Clatterford' on the beeb in which one of the characters also moonlights as an real-estate agent. She was selling what she called 'starter homes', houses so tiny where doors swing into the room and you have to go round it to get into the liliputian room. It was funny, but it was ironic that the funny little tiny kitchen shown was better than the barely-there kitchens in some of the 'posher' apartment buildings in Pune with asking prices that go into the crores in Indian rupees.

And view what view. They have no time for views, too busy selling cement boxes for people to squash into. Buildings come up in the middle of nowhere without any urban planning, and god forbid we asked for a park or some green space in the middle of all this ugly suffocating architecture. Their idea of a green space is a lawn planted between the tower blocks. Then they hike the prices by claiming their 'flats' are 'garden facing'.

The farmlands that used to surround this once beautiful and verdant city has been pillaged by concrete and often the builders who do this are aided by politicians or are themselves politicians. And now they are actively campaigning to build on the hills _ the only remaining green spaces left in the city.
