Deze vuurloze stoomloc wordt gebruikt op het bedrijfsterrein en de stamlijn naar het hoofdspoor bij station Herne. Na mijn bezoek in juni 2015, is de loc een tijd buiten dienst geweest, maar na ik onlangs heb begrepen wordt hij nu wel weer (soms) gebruikt. Toch uitzonderlijk in 2020.
Voordeel van dergelijke chemiebedrijven is dat er altijd gratis stoom ter beschikking staat, dat maakt de exploitatie natuurlijk wel aantrekkelijk.

In Sankt Michaelisdonn treffen seit 1920 die "alte" und die "neue" Marschbahn zusammen.
Wikipedia schreibt dazu folgendes:
"Die heutige Stichstrecke Wilster–Brunsbüttel(koog) besteht größtenteils aus dem ursprünglichen Verlauf der Marschbahntrasse. Ab 1. Mai 1893 wurde Brunsbüttelkoog über eine Stichstrecke von Sankt Margarethen aus angebunden. Aus diesen beiden Streckenabschnitten wurde später die südliche Stichstrecke nach Brunsbüttel. Diese bindet heute die Industrieareale dort an. Noch bis zum 27. Mai 1988 wurde diese Trasse auch im Personenverkehr bedient, seither nur noch im Güterverkehr.
Die Verlegung der Marschbahntrasse wurde erforderlich, um den Nord-Ostsee-Kanal auch nach seiner Verbreiterung weiterhin queren zu können. Diese Maßnahme war ursprünglich für das Jahr 1914 geplant worden, verzögerte sich jedoch. Die bis 1920 in Betrieb befindliche Drehbrücke bei Taterpfahl war eine der Engpassstellen für den Ausbau. Sie wurde durch die Hochbrücke Hochdonn ersetzt. Um diese Hochbrücke erschließen zu können, mussten kilometerlange Rampen errichtet werden, die zur Verlegung der Trasse zwischen den Bahnhöfen Wilster und Sankt Michaelisdonn führten.
Die Bahnstrecke Sankt Michaelisdonn – Brunsbüttel Nord besteht ebenfalls aus dem 1920 verbliebenen Rest der Marschbahn westlich des Nord-Ostsee-Kanals, der durch den Bau der Hochbrücke Hochdonn entstand. Hier stellte die Deutsche Bundesbahn im Jahr 1969 den Personenverkehr ein. Auf diesem Streckenast erfolgt nur noch Güterverkehr zum Anschluss der Firma Sasol in Brunsbüttel."
Am 22.04.2021 erreicht 245 011 mit einem Married-Pair-Wagenpark als RE6 von Hamburg-Altona nach Westerland/Sylt den Bahnhof Michaelisdonn, welcher ohne Halt durchfahren wird. Das im Bild vordere Gleis führt über die alte Marschbahntrasse nach Brunsbüttel zu den dortigen Industrieanschlüssen.
Die Stadt Augusta in der Region Siracusa ist sowohl durch die eindrucksvolle Landschaft am Ionischen Meer, als auch durch die Petrochemie geprägt. Unternehmen wie ExxonMobil, Sasol, ERG, Polimeri Europa und Syndial haben sich im Industriepark Augusta-Priolo angesiedelt. Neben Arbeitsplätzen hat die Industrie auch zahlreiche negative Umwelteinflüsse mit sich gebracht, mit denen die Region heute stark zu kämpfen hat.
Am 15.04.2017 beschleunigt eine E656 vor der eindrucksvollen Kulisse von Meer, Bergen, Stadt und Industrie den IC 722 in Richtung Catania.

Het is de laatste vuurloze stoomloc die in het westen van Duitsland wordt (werd) ingezet. De loc wordt gebruikt voor het rangeren op het bedrijfsterrein en brengt ketelwagens via het bedrijfsspoor naar het iets verder gelegen station van Herne. Momenteel (eind 2018) staat de loc geloof ik als reserve ter beschikking.

Despite the fact that Sasol describes sheltered coastlines with rock pools as part of their habitat I really didn't expect to see these on the beach.
After the initial suprise wore off I saw them every day in surprisingly large numbers at times.

Esso è gestito dalla ditta T-Rail e viene utilizzato per il trasferimento dei carri alle aziende e viceversa.
Nella foto, il Kof e il Deutz 58174 ex DB vengono impiegati per l'inoltro di cinque carri adibiti al trasporto di merci pericolose alla Sasol.

Kranshoek Coastal Walk
The Kranshoek Trail is a challenging but very beautiful trail. It starts at the Kranshoek picnic site at the top of a tall waterfall, then winds it's way through the forest down into the gorge through which the waterfall's stream flows. It follows this stream towards the coast and then leads along the coast before going up the slopes to the plateau and back to the picnic site via the Kranshoek viewpoint.
On this trail you'll get to see a bit of everything our beautiful area has to offer, from indigenous forests to fynbos to breathtaking coastal views, the Kranshoek Trail has it all.
For those who find the full trail a bit strenuous there is an optional shortcut up to the Kranshoek viewpoint and back to the picnic spot (about 4km) shortly after reaching the coast.
Distance: 9km, circular.
Difficulty: Challenging.
Route markers: 'Feet' painted on rocks or trees.
Permits/Costs: Obtain a permit from the small office at the boom. If the boom is unmanned a self issue permit applies, there is a wooden box with permits at the boom. Free for Wild Card members.

Wanderwege im Garden Route Nationalpark in der Hakerville Section entlang der Küste und im einheimischen Urwald bieten atemberaubende Aussichten auf unberührte Naturlandschaften entlang der Küstenlinie des Indischen Ozean.
Rundwege mit 1km, 1.8 km, 3.4 km, 9.4 km
Kranshoek liegt im Hakerville Waldgebiet an der N2 zwischen Knysna und Plettenberg Bay ca. 25 km von Littlewood Garden. Das Gebiet gehört inzwischen zum Gardenroute Nationalpark.
Anfahrtsbeschreibung:
Von Knysna aus fahren Sie die N2 Richtung Plettenberg Bay. An der Sasol Tankstelle, ca. 17 km ausserhalb von Knysna biegen Sie rechts ab. Folgen sie der Straße ca. 1.7 km und biegen sie dann rechts ab. Folgen Sie der Straße für ca. 4.2 km zur Kranshoek Picnic Site. Hier können Sie ihr Auto auf dem Hochplateu oberhalb einer Schlucht an einer schönen Picknickstelle parken.
Permit / Kosten: Eintritt R 22,00 pro Person. Eintritt für Wild Card Inhaber frei.

Schöner Küstenwanderweg. Man parkt auf dem Hochplateau oberhalb einer Schlucht an einer schön gelegenen Picknickstelle. Der Wanderweg führt auf der einen Seite der Schlucht durch einheimischen Urwald nach unten. Steilere Abschnitte sind mit Treppenstufen versehen. Man überquert einige Male den Kranshoek Fluss und kann an einer Stelle sogar in einem Felsenpool baden.
Auf dem Weg befinden sich Informationstafeln, die Auskunft über Geologie, Flora und Fauna geben. Unten kommt man aus dem Urwald auf eine herrliche Bucht mit großen abgerundeten Steinen und Kieseln. Hier stehen viele von Wind und Wetter zerklüftete rötliche Felsformationen, die fast wie verteinerte Märchenfiguren aussehen. Nach einer Wanderung am Strand entlang, führt der Weg auf der anderen Seite durch Fynbosvegetation mit herrlichen Ausblicken auf den Indischen Ozean wieder nach oben. Es sind ca. 180 Höhenmeter zu überwinden. Besonders die Abkürzung führt in Serpentinen oft steil nach oben und an einigen Stellen muss man über Steine und Felsen klettern.

This is a really interesting bird because of the debate that continues to rage about whether it's just a subspecies of the Little Egret (Dark morph of Egret garzetta) or a separate species Egretta gularis.
The Western Reef Egret or Heron (as described by Sasol) is also dimorphic but another twist is that the Dimorphic Egret (E. dimorpha) now known as the Mascarene Reef-Egret could also be considered a race of either the Little Egret or the Western Reef Egret.
For the purposes of this post and where I saw the bird I believe it to be a Western Reef Egret (Heron) of the sub-species schistacea but am happy to be proven wrong.

261 084 is pushing two tank cars through the backyards of Ernst-August-Deich street to the Sasol Wax GmbH company, which is only a few hundred meters away.

Da es auf der Bahnstrecke zwischen St.Michaelisdonn und Brunsbüttel nur ein einziges Güterzupaar mit festen Fahrzeiten gibt, lassen sich einige Motive nie mit dem passenden Sonnenstand umsetzen. Die Rückleistung verkehrt bei vollem Gegenlicht.
Eines der Motive ist der ehemalige Bahnhof Blangenmoor-Lehe bei Averlak, an dem die alte Marschbahntrasse Richtung Kudensee (über die ehemalige Drehbrücke über den Nord-Ostsee-Kanal) und weiter nach Wilster abzweigte. Nachdem die Hochbrücke in Hochdonn im Jahr 1920 fertiggestellt wurde, wurde die alte Trasse aufgelassen und die ehemalige Stichstrecke nach Brunsbüttel-Nord blieb die hier einzig verbliebene Strecke.
Heute endet das Gleis ca. drei Kilometer vor dem ehemaligem Bahnhof Brunsbüttel-Nord am Chemiewerk der Firma Sasol, welches werktäglich angefahren wird.
Im Hintergrund ist mit einer Länge von 2831 Metern die drittlängste Straßenbrücke Deutschlands, die Hochbrücke Brunsbüttel über den Nord-Ostsee-Kanal im Zuge der Bundesstraße 5, zu sehen.
Am 22. August 2017 war die 261 036 mit dem EK 53779 (Brunsbüttel Condea - St.Michaelisdonn) unterwegs.
WNYP 432 powers the job out of Meadville to Oil City and this day to Rouseville and Rynd Farm with interchange cars for the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad. The train is passing the little to unused yard at McClintock (all former PRR), that I am sure back in the day was full of tank cars for refinery row that used to be in the Oil Creek Valley. Refineries lined Route 8 in the valley with companies like Quaker State and Pennzoil. I recall driving Route 8 at night through here in the mid-1980's with all the plants lit up, steam, vapor and interesting odors emitting from the plants.
There is one small "refinery facility" left, and it can be seen in the distance at left, the Sasol North America chemical plant.
Looking at this now, hard to believe this was part of PRR's line from Pittsburgh, PA to Buffalo, NY.

You'll have to take my word for it as I was unable to get a good shot of the tail. Generally only found in the East of the country and in a tight band that stretches up through the Kruger (according to Sasol).
It's smaller than a Fork-Tailed Drongo and also not seen as often in my experience.

Kranshoek liegt im Hakerville Waldgebiet an der N2 zwischen Knysna und Plettenberg Bay ca. 25 km von Littlewood Garden. Das Gebiet gehört inzwischen zum Gardenroute Nationalpark.
Anfahrtsbeschreibung:
Von Knysna aus fahren Sie die N2 Richtung Plettenberg Bay. An der Sasol Tankstelle, ca. 17 km ausserhalb von Knysna biegen Sie rechts ab. Folgen sie der Straße ca. 1.7 km und biegen sie dann rechts ab. Folgen Sie der Straße für ca. 4.2 km zur Kranshoek Picnic Site. Hier können Sie ihr Auto auf dem Hochplateu oberhalb einer Schlucht an einer schönen Picknickstelle parken.
Permit / Kosten: Eintritt R 22,00 pro Person. Eintritt für Wild Card Inhaber frei.

Schöner Küstenwanderweg. Man parkt auf dem Hochplateau oberhalb einer Schlucht an einer schön gelegenen Picknickstelle. Der Wanderweg führt auf der einen Seite der Schlucht durch einheimischen Urwald nach unten. Steilere Abschnitte sind mit Treppenstufen versehen. Man überquert einige Male den Kranshoek Fluss und kann an einer Stelle sogar in einem Felsenpool baden.
Auf dem Weg befinden sich Informationstafeln, die Auskunft über Geologie, Flora und Fauna geben. Unten kommt man aus dem Urwald auf eine herrliche Bucht mit großen abgerundeten Steinen und Kieseln. Hier stehen viele von Wind und Wetter zerklüftete rötliche Felsformationen, die fast wie verteinerte Märchenfiguren aussehen. Nach einer Wanderung am Strand entlang, führt der Weg auf der anderen Seite durch Fynbosvegetation mit herrlichen Ausblicken auf den Indischen Ozean wieder nach oben. Es sind ca. 180 Höhenmeter zu überwinden. Besonders die Abkürzung führt in Serpentinen oft steil nach oben und an einigen Stellen muss man über Steine und Felsen klettern.

Every recent encounter I've had with these birds, they are invariably in a tree against an overcast sky - not ideal with a white-headed bird. This is the only passable shot I've managed to get.

Kranshoek Coastal Walk
The Kranshoek Trail is a challenging but very beautiful trail. It starts at the Kranshoek picnic site at the top of a tall waterfall, then winds it's way through the forest down into the gorge through which the waterfall's stream flows. It follows this stream towards the coast and then leads along the coast before going up the slopes to the plateau and back to the picnic site via the Kranshoek viewpoint.
On this trail you'll get to see a bit of everything our beautiful area has to offer, from indigenous forests to fynbos to breathtaking coastal views, the Kranshoek Trail has it all.
For those who find the full trail a bit strenuous there is an optional shortcut up to the Kranshoek viewpoint and back to the picnic spot (about 4km) shortly after reaching the coast.
Distance: 9km, circular.
Difficulty: Challenging.
Route markers: 'Feet' painted on rocks or trees.
Permits/Costs: Obtain a permit from the small office at the boom. If the boom is unmanned a self issue permit applies, there is a wooden box with permits at the boom. Free for Wild Card members.
