7/2/08 – Today’s FGR challenge features the Motivation Parody group. Quite fun, and the group was inspired by the t-shirts/posters found on the despair.com/ website. There’s even a tool to create your very own motivation parody t-shirt or poster too.

Did I say quite fun? What I really meant is it’s okay, if you’re bored & don’t want to stare blankly at a wall or something.”

I shot this at a race I was at years ago. I figured it's self-explanatory.

ara_p twittered about this article in The Register about "Life on Mars!"

I checked out the med-res version of the pic (5.856 MB) on the NASA site and not only does it prove there's life on Mars, but that there are dogs too!

On the left you see a Martian holding up a treat for the dog found highlighted on the right. Shocking evidence!

Biography

Recipe for Katy Gunn: Pour equal parts of the following into large bowl: Ella Fitzgerald, Bettie Paige, Wonder Woman, Hip-Hop, pure joy, Brain-Dance, unrequited love, sinful debauchery, Idealism to a fault, and (quite a bit of) sarcasm.

Cook for any length of time to achieve varying results. All promise to be rich rich rich.

Katy Gunn - a DIYer with a vengeance, wrote and produced her solo EP - well equipped with rich vocal harmonies, soulful grooves and an intimate songwriter's sensibility. Sarcastically witty "exquisite pop" as quoted by her CD Baby review, Katy Gunn's music is all at once dark and blissful, daring and eclectic while maintaining accessibility as she always finds a way to lay down a hook with particular sophistication. To top it off, her voice is one you won't be forgetting anytime soon.

From the age of two, Katy routinely stole her brother's violin and practiced secretly in the broom closet. The path to a musical life seemed inevitable from that point on. Dropping out of high school to study classical violin at the Oberlin Conservatory, she performed at home and abroad as soloist and concert master, until eventually moving beyond the staid classical world to pursue her own musical language. Katy traveled restlessly between San Francisco, West Hollywood, Chicago, New York, Spain and Brazil before eventually settling in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), where she currently resides.

Nothing like your typical rock band, come to a show and you will find a seven piece group with three part vocal harmony, two violins (katy will dazzle you as she sings and plays the violin - both at the same time) and a complete rhythm section sure to please. Her self-released EP is a willing teaser for the upcoming album, "Beautiful Things," yet another DIY accomplishment to be released in the fall of 2010.

Masking for Mardi Gras is an art, and often-times sarcasm, wit and contemporary punning make for the best costumes.

This illustration photo for "Southern Comforting" (a refreshing libation) features a Bourbon Street reveler in a snarky outfit, made up of debris.

The costumes plays on "Ash Wednesday, the Christian day of fasting and confession that marks the beginning of Lent, and which is observed the day after Mardi Gras, as well as the fact that the French Quarter if filled to the brim with rubbish, which must all be shoveled, swept and hosed away on Ash Wednesday.

In fact, the New Orleans mounted police and the big street washing trucks are the official end-points to a celebration period that begins on Epiphany (January 6th) and ends at the stroke of Midnight on Mardi Gras Tuesday.

Compiled and photographed by Dana Holyfield, my copy is signed by Holyfield on the inside cover back page and published in 2002.

Published by Honey Island Swamp Press, the book has photographs from various parts of Southeast Louisiana during the 2000, 2001 and 2002 Mardi Gras season.

Sassy and irreverent and filled with tidbits of history, this gem of a booklet captures the pre-Katrina fever of Mardi Gras.

The novel involves a lot of transformations, metaphorical and literal. In the short story that Frank chose for the cover, a couple gets into a fight and literally turns to liquid and flows down the street.

John Fluevog's store always has some interesting ad copy on their windows. Don't exactly know how you sell sarcasm - but 70% off sounds about right.

Foreword: My stories are always factual based on hands-on observations which may be embellished with commentaries, at times even sarcasms, to add interest to the readers. I mean no disrespect to my subjects.

This composite image is obviously not about picture pixels and sharpness. Rather, it is an interesting microcosm of crow behavior, although not necessarily representative of such. While waiting for crows to lift from today’s staging site, I noticed a juvenile Ball Eagle landing on the ice of the Cataraqui River about 600 meters from where I was standing at the Kingston Inner Harbour. It had its eyes trained on a family of river otters frequently coming up to the surface to eat fish they had caught. The mottled-looking raptor did manage to steal some scrap of food from the otters. While it was eating on an expanse of icesheet, in front of it descended and landed a lone, manifestly fearless crow watched by hundreds of the same safely perched about half a kilometer away on tall shoreline deciduous trees. The two adversaries faced one another, stared at each other for a while in a manner akin to a western-style duel. Although perhaps confused, the eagle “stuck to its guns” while the crow approached, at times hesitantly, but eventually brought itself essentially shoulder to shoulder with what is often considered a top winged predator. If there were any such thing as crows sensing death, this one might have been sensing its own demise for a while. The crow’s insistence may have been rewarded by a few scraps of food collected near the eagle, but this did not suffice. The crow then flew a short distance to check out the area where the otters were feeding and lacking success, it went on to join its own kind in the trees. Would such daring and imprudent behaviour on the part of some crows explain the dismembered crow wing I discovered on the shore of the inner harbour late last week (see next image)? Who knows? Nonetheless, I am sure the crow funeral was very moving with all attendees following tradition by wearing black (sarcasm).
