A charcoal-seller trudges past the secure building of yet another Sri Lankan sapphire dealer.
A general lack of electricity supply to homes drives the demand for charcoal for cooking. charcoal production assists the poor to scrape a living but continues the decline of unprotected woodlands and of course adds to atmospheric pollution and global warming.

Saphires were discovered in Ilakaka (little town in central part of the island) in 90'. This triggered the 'gold rush'. There are many sapphire mines around the town, we had a chance (the power of money...) to visit one of such heavily guarded places. Here is one of sieves used to sort out the precious stones.

Sakaraha is a mining town on the RN7 between Tulear and Isalo. Every building in the town either sells gemstones, or services the people who sell - or buy - them! We stopped at Le Buffet for a coffee.
