Astarte Suites Hotel is a luxury 9-suites boutique hotel, each with its own personal style and vision.

When Christos e-mailed me these photos of an old canava in Oia, Santorini that was about to be restored, I couldn’t help smiling.

All those spontaneous decorations, full of colors and messages, they bring an aura of distant days and ways that are over. 8 Track tapes, diaries, and advertising posters that fade from the sun, are the souvenirs of a time that promised fulfillment and joy. Yet, now they lay there like children’s toys, carefree in their innocence and ready to give their place to elegant grey, i pods and less is more decorations.

And I feel completely disoriented about it; I mean, I do love elegant grey, i pods and less is more. But finding the perfect neutral palette for my new floor doesn’t make me smile like these retro pluralistic images do… Maybe because the old canava decorations express something familiar. And it is worth to discover what this familiarity is about, because if we incorporate it to contemporary thinking, we could develop a stronger identity, in a visual, culinary, or personal level.

What do you think about this? How do these pictures make you feel?

About the Wine Tourism

How all started.

After the cataclysmic volcanic eruption, 1645 BC, the entire island of Santorini was covered by lava, ash and pumice stone. But the disaster helped thesoil to be perfect for creating the distinctive Santorini wines.

The Santorini’s most famous wines are considered to be the white dry and aromatic wines Nykteri and Assyrtico and the world famous Vinsanto . Both the Nykteri and Vinsanto belong to the category of “Name of Origin of Superior Quality” and come under the European Union status for “Quality Wines Produced in Statedly Areas”.

Assyrtiko

One of the finest noble white grapes of Europe, its origins come from the island of Santorini, where it has its greatest expression of character, due in large part to the influence of the island’s volcanic soil. It is naturally resistant to most diseases and another reason why it has become a popular grape, re-planted throughout Greece.

Assyrtiko makes up 70% of the vineyards of Santorini. It has the unusual quality of maintaining high levels of alcohol and acidity at the same time, making it one of the few white grapes of the Mediterranean that also possess long aging potential. Assyrtiko produces dry, full-bodied white wines with citrus aromas combined with a pleasing mineral character derived from the volcanic soil it is grown in. Assyrtiko is also blended with Athiri and Aidani to make the sweet wine, Vinsanto.

Athiri

One of the most ancient of Greek grape varieties, Athiri was once made into a sweet wine, prized during Byzantine years. The name of the grape indicates its origin from the Island of Santorini, also known as "Thira" in ancient time. Athiri, on it’s own, produces medium-bodied wines with delicate aromatic qualities. It is also used to make Vinsanto and dry white blends with Assyrtiko and Aidani .

Nykteri

Nykteri wine took its name due to the fact that it is produced instantly in the middle of the night for the grapes, which were harvested just the day before. The viticulturists press the grapes from the morning untill the night and the whole process of wine making takes place during the night when the temperatures are lower. The undermined "canavas" with their carefully studied windows create the adequate night streams, necessary for the fermentation process.

Aidani

Another ancient Greek variety, Aidani produces pleasantly aromatic wines with medium body and nice acidity. It is also used to make Vinsanto and dry white blends with Assyrtiko and Athiri.

Vinsanto

Vinsanto wine is a sweet, white or red wine produced from grapes dried in the sun. The celebrated sweet wine which expresses Santorini’s uniqueness, it used to complete the gustative feasts of the Medieval times noblemen, while at the same time, comprised for centuries the “Holly Communion” to all the chalices of the Russian Orthodox Church.
