I often think to myself "I live in the most beautiful place in the world". And I wonder if it's just because it's my home that I think that or if it really is objectively. I think the answer is that the two things are all caught up together and one informs the other.

"He flies through the air with the greatest of ease". I came across a motocross event in Yesnaby while exploring south of the Skara Brae prehistoric site along the west coast of Orkney, Scotland. It was a chance for me to practice a little 'sports' photography. Motocross and motorcycle touring are a very popular, but highly noisy, sport in the northern islands and the car ferry I came north on had dozens and dozens of motorbikes below decks.

On a recent visit to Thursley Common, where last year Kathy and I had found a small colony of Small Copper butterflies( sadly ,not this year,a much diminishing species) and after a fruitless search of the Parish field where they were nectaring on Ragwort last year, all we found were a few Meadow Browns and one tired looking Painted Lady.We decided to have a look for,and try and capture some shots of Black Darter dragonflies, fairly common there. On the way back to the ponds I'd noticed these wasps, brightly coloured, similar but not the same as the common wasps you get in your garden.I'd seen them before on the common, but was always sidetracked by something else to photograph.

But,this time I thought I'd see and learn what actions and habits they were involved in.They seemed to congregate in small colonies, each female occupying a dug burrow, the entrance of which they defended by charging out and driving away any other Beewolf wasps trying to make use of a ready dug nest site, using their substantially armoured face as a battering ram.In the burrow, they have their nest, where they raise there larval young.

Whilst I was fascinated by this activity,a wasp arrived, obviously carrying something, which I assumed was was some prey item. This turned out to be an unfortunate Honey Bee,of which there are many collecting pollen on the blossoming Heather. The Wasp was landing intermittently,I guess, positioning itself to take the prey into its burrow as food for its larval young.

I managed a few close ups of this amazing insects, one of which I've posted here.

When I got home I gleaned the info above from one of my many books on insects and stuff.

What an amazing creature,we're so lucky to have access to all this nature on our doorstep.

P.S..if you look closely, you can see how the wasp carries its prey using its middle legs hooked in behind the wings of the bee.

Die kleinste der bewohnten kanarischen Inseln. Die Straßen hier sind einfache Sandpisten.

The smallest of the inhabited Canary Islands. The roads here are simple sandy tracks.

A pair of airborne motocross racers with a trailing dust cloud speed by my lens on a track near Yesnaby, Orkney. I noticed there were some similarities between sports and wildlife photography, which I'm more familiar with, including the need for fast shutter speeds and rapid reaction times.....although there was no need to hunt down and find the motocross riders :-)

Tabbimoble Swamp Nature Reserve

Avenue of eucalypts partly shade this sandy track through the bush in Boranup, Western Australia.

This sign appeared on the Stuart Highway South of Larrimah around 2010. If followed there are no further signs between this turnoff and Birdum. There is a track that follows the railway to the Birdum site but there are some really bad sandy sections that need a 4WD to safely negotiate.

Photograph of one of the several walkways to Narrabeen and Collaroy beaches in Sydney.

[Information from 'Beachsafe website]

Narrabeen-Collaroy beach is Sydney's second longest beach. The 3.6 km long beach curves in a gentle east-facing arc between 20 m high Narrabeen Head in the north to rocks and low cliff at Collaroy Point, with beachfront houses and apartments backing much of the beach. The northern Narrabeen end was named after the daughter of the aboriginal chief at the time of early white settlement in the 1840s, while the southern Collaroy end was named after the paddle-wheel steamer ‘Collaroy’ wrecked on the beach in 1884. Collaroy Beach was a weekenders and campers haven in the early part of the century.

When I booked my trip to Oman I had no idea what to expect. Friends said it was an incredible spot to visit. Photos of the empty quarter and other regions looked stunning. The general advice I got was that it was a) expensive and b) safe.

During my 6 day road trip at the end of 2019 and start of 2020 I explored the north eastern corner of the country.

I found the prices to be comfortable so long as you were flexible and had your own car. More than that, the beauty of the landscapes was stunning, and the locals were incredibly friendly and welcoming.

These are highlights from that trip.
