Empire Sandy began serving the Great Lakes as a tall ship in 1982 based in Toronto, Canada. The 200-foot (61 m) long topsail schooner offers sailings for the public, chartered tours, including weddings and other events, on Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Licensed by Transport Canada to carry 275 passengers, she is Canada's largest topsail schooner. Visitors are usually welcome onboard during the day.

Light has never shown you the way out this place

But I have came here to take you away

And after we go down

To the ground,

Bury your sorrows down

In the ground

No one ever wanders

This world is full of wonders

And I'm the one to let them know

They will not listen though

Kewstoke beach is not what you would call a traditional sandy beach. It is part of the Severn estuary and therefore has a 13 metre rise and fall spanning a one mile course. It collects sediment up river and dumps it along its banks at certain places, parts of Kewstonke are one of them. Be warned...you will sink in this mud up to your waist if you walk on it!

The two Islands on the horizon are Flat Holm and Steep Holm, Bristol Channel, UK.

“Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.” Don McCullin (1935)

Sandy Moon – I shot this on a frozen night in December. Parts of the dunes were still frozen from the snowfall a week before, but sand had blown back over the snow is some places covering the snow. There were places you would fall through the crust about 6-12 inches, so you had to be careful of your shins. The sunset was kind of a dud this night, but I knew the moon would coming out in about 45 minutes, so I hunkered down from the cold wind until the moon popped up over the mountain range. I included some grass in foreground to add some interest and depth. While the photo doesn’t so the overcast sky there was just enough that I couldn’t get any good detail in the moon even when underexposing the shot, so I went with this version, a single image of the moon casting a glow over the dunes.

The land is known to flood during extreme high tides especially with high winds pushing in off the North Atlantic when storm surge can raise sea levels by an extra meter.

Seems like a lifetime since I snapped this sunset image down at Sandy Point. In reality, it's less than two weeks... difficult for me to believe!
