In my years of wandering the beaches, I’ve seen many drawings in the sand. Names, hearts, stick figures, cryptic designs, and obscene words. One thing I have never seen is a rectangle.

When we travel to the healing sand, the old become children again. The cynical become mystics. The depressed become joyful. The sedentary begin to move. The lost find themselves again. Endings find their beginnings.

The impermanent open space by the sea teases out the roundness of life in all of us.

No one saves us but ourselves.

No one can and no one may.

We ourselves must walk the path.

You can barely see the shadow of the vehicle making these patterns, just to be pretty I guess.

Uluru also known as Ayers Rock and officially gazetted as Uluru / Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory in central Australia. It lies 335 km south west of the nearest large town, Alice Springs. Uluru is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area. The area around the formation is home to an abundance of springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings. Uluru is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Uluru and Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas, are the two major features of the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. Anangu art has traditionally taken the form of rock paintings, sand drawings and body painting. Anangu paintings are created for two complimentary reasons: religious and ceremonial expression; and teaching and storytelling.

Traditional methods and designs are passed on from one generation to the next. Today Anangu still create sand drawings and body paintings for these purposes but do not use rock paintings any more. Now they also have available a wide range of new materials to use including acrylic paints and canvases and have acquired new skills such as painting on ceramics and punu, wood carving and decorating. Although the mediums may have changed Anangu artists use the same symbols and meanings that have been used over many generations. This enables Anangu to continue passing on knowledge through storytelling as well as providing the community with a source of income. Paintings and crafts in this style are on display in the visitor centres and for sale at Uluru - Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. 15402

If there's a particularly low tide at dawn, and before most surfers and beach runners/walkers come out, someone has been periodically creating elaborate sand drawings in the tidal zone adjacent to Venice Pier. They are gone in a very few hours as the tide rises.

Each draw tells a story, the stick stays in the sand and is never removed to make a complicated and very graphic result!

This one is about pigs in a field or something like that (it was not very clear!)...

Sand drawings are elegant geometric patterns produced directly on the ground which serve to transmit a wealth of traditional knowledge about local history, indigenous rituals and cosmologies, kinship systems, natural phenomena or farming techniques.

In 2003, 'Vanuatu Sand Drawing' was proclaimed a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. In 2004, UNESCO/Japan Funds-In-Trust For the Preservation and Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritage began funding of a program to safeguard sand drawings in Vanuatu

I found this on a recent hike and was

intrigued by the collaborative efforts of

I've seen this guy working and his work before but I never got the timing right to see a whole piece done before it gets washed away. Very cool work and so fleeting. He saw me getting ready to take a shot and asked if you could run down and be in it. Cool!
