After several years of acting as a volunteer for the St. Vincent NWR Sambar Hunt, Robin Rickel Vroegop applied for, and was drawn to participate as a hunter in this special opportunity hunt. She is shown here in her "All Natural" tree stand, as the sun rises on the first day of hunting.

Sambar Deer on Alert

A sambar (Cervus unicolour) in Horton plains

As I recall, this hunter was on his first Sambar hunt and bagged a 500+pound Sambar stag in the first few hours of the hunt.

He was feeling, quite rightly, proud of himself and his prize. In a matter of a couple of hours though, Robert Corder flagged refuge manager Terry Peacock down, saying he'd tagged a big one that had waded out into the marsh in the Jungle Rd. area. Sure enough, Robert had bagged a Safari Club International Trophy Stag that weighed in at 580 pounds and had a 33 inch rack! Photo by USFWS Volunteer, Robin Rickel Vroegop.

Three generations of Lovestrand family hunters depart the barrier island on a their private boat after the 2008 Sambar Hunt on St. Vincent NWR. At least one of their party had prior Sambar Hunt experience, and those coolers are loaded down with their cleaned and iced-down '08 harvest. Calm waters accompanied this year's departure, but that is not always the case. Fronts can move in quickly and make this crossing treacherous for small craft.

While backing from the tirumala hills this beautiful creature was appeared! The sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deernative to the Indian subcontinent, southern China, and Southeast Asia that is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat. #photooftheday #picoftheday #sambardeer #nature #naturephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #mountain #repost #bekind #animals #animalrescue #animalphotography #candidshot #wildlifephoto @canonindia_ @canonusa @creativephotos._ @canon_photos @nikonasia

The other end of the rope is tied to the back of the Polaris ATV in order to get this game out of the marsh. New hunt rules require field dressing of harvest in order to preserve sensitive wetlands and native vegetation. Photo by USFWS Volunteer, Robin Rickel Vroegop.

Larry Covell of Wheelhouse Charters arrives to pick up the straggling Weymouth Party at the close of the SVNWR Sambar Hunt 2008. Their Party consisted of George Weymouth, Neil Elder, and Dave Klein. They shared their ride across with Robin Rickel Vroegop, USFWS volunteer, and first time Sambar Hunt participant. Together, they were the first ones to arrive on this hunt, and the last ones to leave. I guess that speaks volumes about our affection for this very special Island refuge! They are favourite prey of tigers and Asiatic lions. In India, the sambar can comprise up to nearly 60% of the prey selected by the Bengal tiger. Anecdotally, the tiger is said to even mimic the call of the sambar to deceive it while hunting.
