Sambar Deer in the Royal Takin Preserve in Thimphu, Bhutan. Unfortunately all the animals were sitting at the far end of their enclosure and it was only this much I could zoom in with my trusty iPhone 15 Pro Max. A magnificent Sambar stag with impressive horns moved away to a location which was too far to photograph. Apart from Takin, the main attraction in the park, the Takin Preserve hosts a small collection of other animals too. The Sambar is a large deer species native to the Indian subcontinent, South China and Southeast Asia. Sambar populations have sadly declined substantially due to indiscriminate hunting, local insurgency and habitat loss. Sambar inhabit various types tropical forests, areas with conifers and seldom move far from water sources. More notes about Sambar deer appear elsewhere in this album. (Thimphu, Bhutan, Apr. 2025)
