The Dalles occupies a significant slice of my psyche. It sits where Oregon's dry side starts strutting its stuff: Rocky cliffs; undulating, grassy hills; white oaks; and windy wheat fields stretching out beyond eyeshot. The dusty Western Songbook opens with a tune of blowing dust, tractors, and the mighty Columbia River that sliced Oregon from Washington through successive Missouls Floods.

Under the river at The Dalles lay the Long and Short Narrows, a former dead end for boat traffic where the river turned on its side through slots in the basalt. Attempting to sail a boat through them was suicide before a bypass channel was blasted in the early 1900's. Both the channel and the narrows were submerged by the Bonneville Dam. The river is sleepy now, but the rocky shoreline is a reminder of the turbulent past.

I saw that there was going to be some sun at Mosier today, so I thought it would be a good time to test out the new IR camera. By the time I got there, though, the clouds had declared victory. I saw a little bit of blue sky to the east, so I drove to The Dalles, were I caught about 10 minutes of sun over the Columbia. It’s always best to have some sun for infrared photography.

Focusing with an IR camera is not a simple thing. I remember from many years of using IR film, that many vintage lenses have an infrared mark that shows you exactly where to set the focus. Modern auto-focus lenses… not so much. I though that I could just stop down to F16 like I have done with film, but the image here is still a little fuzzy. I will have to experiment further. Some sunshine would help.

A Salmon Crossing sign warns passers by of the precious wildlife in these waters in Salmon Season. On the other side is Cross Marin Trail.
