It only seems right that a gothic cathedral should have a heavy threatening sky. On this fine evening the backdrop was pure blue so forgive my artistic licence of adding the different sky.

Late morning in the Cathedral close at Salisbury on Monday. A blustery but bright morning which gave way to greyness and drizzle. I was lucky to get this shot - pity about the scaffolding.

I really can't decide which I like the best, I like the gate in one, and i like the water in the other.

Reflections in the beautiful font at Salisbury Cathedral, England. Work on the present cathedral began in 1197 to replace an even older building. The 'Living Water' font was installed in 2008 to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the consecration of the cathedral in 1258. I took my first round of photos in the morning but there were far too many people about. I returned a second time near closing when all the visitors had left. Almost had the place to myself...and didn't want to leave.

We were en route via Salisbury so stopped to do a bit of sightseeing. There is a large cathedral there ;-) I wanted to see the peregrine falcons and did manage a glimpse of one high up flying around the spire. But the short camera lens wasn't up for that so spent some time trying to be creative with photographing the whole building in wide-angle.
The real problem with making a photo of the cloisters at Salisbury cathedral is waiting for all of the other tourists to get out of the way. It's like my dad used to say of his driving, 'it's not me that's the problem, it's all of the other idiots on the road!'
Anyway, I hung around long enough and finally managed a 3 second window before the next bunch came around the corner.

A mobile photo of the Salisbury House in Des Moines, Iowa. The massive manor is a mix of Tudor, Gothic and Carolean styles and modeled after the King's House in Salisbury, England. The 42-room home measures just over 22,000 square feet and is built on a wooded hill with a commanding view over the 9.4-acres of the estate’s property.
The home was built by cosmetics magnate Carl Weeks and his wife, Edith Van Slyke Weeks, between 1923 and 1928. It was constructed and furnished with an original budget of $150,000, but the final cost was $3 million. The Weeks Family amassed extensive collections of fine art, decorative art, rare books, musical instruments, historic documents, weapons and sculpture, and most of these items remain in the Salisbury House to this day.

Its spire built a hundred years later at 404 feet is also the highest in the UK. When built it wasn't the tallest spire as between 1300 and 1549 Lincoln Cathedral held the title as the worlds tallest building. The collapse of its spire changed all of that, although it is interesting to note that it wasn't until 1890 that any building exceeded the height of the former Lincoln Cathedral spire.
Turning back to the spire at Salisbury, the first thing I noticed on arrival was the sound of Peregrin Falcons that nest three quarters of the way up the spire. They could be seen wheeling around and occasionally returning to what I expect would be their nest.
