Sail along with the oldest, still sailing inland vessel in the Netherlands! A unique monument with a unique service. The 'Helena' (from 1875) has been restored to its original state after an extensive restoration.

Thanks for all the nice comments, it is much appreciated

A beautiful evening at Bergen harbor and like everywhere else, it is quiet and even Hurtigruten's ships have had to give in to the Corona virus.

have yourself a happy weekend!

The Blue Mermaid is the first new steel Thames barge since 1930 for the Essex-based Sea-Change Trust who provide action centred learning and seamanship training to disadvantaged and socially excluded young people. The 26m barge is a replica of an original Thames sailing barge named ‘Blue Mermaid’ which was lost in World War II.

Last Saturday we discovered the picturesque harbour of Charlestown after our trip to the Eden Project. We picked that destination almost randomly, just wanting to spend some time at the sea before driving back home. It was our first time in Charlestown and we were really delighted. The harbour is even an UNESCO world heritage site and is almost unchanged from the 17th century. It looks like a proper pirate bay! The award winning Cornish golden vanilla ice cream nicely finished off our visit!

The travels of the Serendtripity

Ships to Shore 2017 - Steveston

One of the world’s largest tall ships, the Kaiwo Maru visited Garry Point Park, Steveston this past weekend.

Built in 1989, this majestic tall ship sailing from Japan is 361 feet in length and has over 29,000 square feet in sails.

Also known as the King of the Sea.

Kaiwo Maru is a Japanese four-masted training barque tall ship. She was built in 1989 to replace a 1930 ship of the same name.

The Ships to Shore celebration attracted thousands upon thousands of people, anxious to catch what possibly could be, a once in a lifetime glimpse of this magnificent sailing ship.

In the background there were nautical displays, carnival activities, food concessions, fireworks and much more...

As night fell, a live band drew and captivated a large audience of people.....truthfully, none of that seemed to distract myself nor many other dedicated photographers..

I know I couldn't 'steer clear' (so to speak) from this extraordinary ship's side and afford wasting one precious moment of what night fall was offering.

The dimming sky provided ongoing colour and light photog opportunities that enhanced the magic of this fine lady and her temporary surroundings.

A sight to 'sea'

Sørlandet is a Norwegian heritage tall ship and one of very few full-rigged ships in the world. She is the senior of the existing Norwegian built square riggers, and for more than 50 years she held a central position in the education and training of young people.

She is the second oldest of three Norwegian tall ships, the “Great Trio of Norway”, which besides her includes Statsraad Lehmkuhl and Christian Radich.

Construction on the Sørlandet was started in 1925 at Høivolds Mek shipyard in the city of Kristiansand on the south coast of Norway based on a £25,000 grant from ship owner O.A.T. Skjelbred. Completed in May 28, 1927, she measured 210 feet in length and 577 gross tons.

She was given the name Sørlandet after the Norwegian region from where she originates.

The Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire Great Lakes curiosity, stewardship, and passion to people of all ages. Through hands-on, experiential learning activities aboard traditionally-rigged tall ship schooners, participants gain the knowledge needed to understand the commitment necessary for the long-term stewardship of the Great Lakes.

ISEA was established in 1989 to provide aquatic science, environmental awareness, and sail training classes for learners of all ages. Over 115,000 students have already participated in ISEA’s shipboard programs, which are taught by over 120 volunteer instructors and ISEA’s professional staff. In 2014, ISEA became a member of Discovery Center~Great Lakes located in Traverse City, MI. The nonprofit members of Discovery Center~Great Lakes are creating a place that will awaken a sense of wonder in people of all ages by encouraging understanding and stewardship of Grand Traverse Bay. Discovery Pier, across from the Discovery Center, is the home to ISEA’s schooner Utopia.
