Saguaro National Park Arizona

As 2022 winds down, I'm posting a series of shots from each of our six trips taken during the year, in chronological order.

Our second trip included a few days in southern Arizona where we found this Greater Roadrunner along a trail in Saguaro National Park.

I would have preferred a pose with this guy facing just a little more to the right. But my time with him was very brief as it ran across the trail, paused for about 2 seconds and then scurried toward the nearest cover. So this will have to suffice.

After a few hours of storms, beams of light filled the sky along with a rainbow shining into the desert about an hour before sunset. The picture was taken in Saguaro National Park (west park) on August 8th 2023.

Quite common, but in thsi sequence, a bit of imbalance leads to a repositioning. 3 images

An uncommon crested saguaro, seen in Saguaro National Park.

An overlook somewhere near Saguaro National Park, Arizona. The sun had set, the lights of the cars leaving the area left their trail, and the stars were just beginning to appear.

This was a bit of a long shot but I enjoyed watching this tiny Verdin probing around this giant Saguaro Cactus. What an interesting environment!

I've never seen a crested saguaro as short as this one. Sure is bulked up, however.

Yesterday was quite an adventure. I finished up an appointment in Marana around 3pm and headed south. I made my way down to Green Valley taking some back roads and scouting out new locations. I then headed back north as the storms near Three Points looked very promising, but Vail kept building. And Vail is much closer to home. I got set up shooting out in the Rincon Valley, where I spent the rest of the evening. Obviously, my favorite part was right around sunset. It always is. The sun broke through the clouds, lit up the sky and formed a full rainbow. I set up overlooking a portion of Saguaro National Park and held my breath for lightning.

Wildflowers along the hiking trail at Saguaro National Park. This photo was taken along the Hugh Norris Trail. I hiked up to Wasson Peak and on the way down stopped to shoot all the wildflowers.

Shot at midday with a polarizer. Boosted the flowers a little in Lightroom.

... but not interested at this moment.

This greater roadrunner is certainly no birdbrain. Note how (s)he (could be either) is standing just a couple of steps in the shade, just outside the blazing sun that brought a 100°+ temperature to Arizona's Sonoran Desert.
