A Sunday edition of BNSF’s Sandpoint Local is powered by a pair of EMD GP50s as is heads eastbound through Algoma, Idaho, and is crossing Sagle Road on the morning of September 26, 2021. The tired Cascade green paint and lettering once decorated a new tiger-striped Burlington Northern unit destined for the railroad’s premier intermodal and “Expediter” trains.
I camped one evening last September on an empty lot in Hope, Idaho, with the owner's permission—truck work awaited the next day in nearby Sagle. Then dusk revealed something rare: not the usual broad strokes of color across the clouds, but sun rays struggling to pierce a thick, dark layer over Lake Pend Oreille, igniting a fiercely localized blaze of deep reds from within, like embers glowing in a hidden forge.
My view was obstructed by shore-side trees, so I half-walked, half-jogged down the road to a half-decent clearing—not spectacular, but it would do. By then, though, the intensity was fading fast; those few missing minutes underscored photography's iron rule of timing.
Hope, once a gritty 1880s railroad boomtown named for Dr. Hope's livestock care amid roaring trains, now mellows as a quiet lakeside haven with eagles soaring overhead.

Burlington Northern GP40M-3520 is leading W/B train #3 on BN's Kottenai River Sub. Here, crossing Lake Pend Oreille. Sand Point, ID is above the train in the distance.
BNSF’s Sandpoint local is eastbound at Algoma, Idaho, on the morning of September 30, 2021, led by a nice-looking EMD pair comprised of SD60M No. 1411 and SD40-2 No. 1924.
On the damp and foggy morning of Thursday, October 2, 2025, a pair of bright orange BNSF engines break the stillness in Sagle, ID as they lead a manifest freight train westward.
On February 3, 2022, BNSF’s Sandpoint local whips through Algoma, at Sagle, Idaho, on the trip to Sandpoint from Spokane.
Cruising beneath the old US-95 bridge, which sits adjacent to its replacement, an empty BNSF grain train heads east through the community of Sagle, ID on the misty morning of Thursday, October 2, 2025.
This is a in-progress restoration. It is a Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 in pastel green, photographed at Selkirk Off Road in Sagle, Idaho. The FJ40 series is celebrated for its durability and status as one of the most recognizable and reliable 4x4 vehicles ever built—an off-road legend spanning decades.
I have to admit that I was very impressed with Selkirk Off Road in Sagle, Idaho. I took my overlanding Tacoma there while I was in Idaho this past summer. is is the Inland Northwest's go-to overland outfitter and fabrication shop, known for turning adventure rigs into trail-ready machines built to last.
This is another look at their impressive showroom, which showcases premium gear... from suspension systems and roof tents to bumpers and recovery equipment that is stalled and tested by the same team that builds custom overland vehicles for real-world conditions. It's a place where craftsmanship meets community, blending professional-grade builds, rugged accessories, and local expertise for anyone serious about off-road exploration.
While I was there, I was treated like family and I was very impressed with their work. My hat's off to the entire team!

Standing on the hillside of a mountain in Sagle, ID looking out over a view of a frozen Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Not much of great interest to be seen on this train, except the 4th unit. Unpainted FXE 4892, which one search on Facebook tells me it has since been repainted into FXE corporate livery. However it was in Spanish so that is all the news I can deliver on it :p
Heading east on the BNSF Spokane Sub is an empty grain bound for the Mid West.

2590 & 3120 head the Sandpoint local through Sagle only a few miles from their final destination. 8/5/2025
The low bridge silhouetted on the water is about two miles long. The original wood bridge, constructed in 1908, was thought at the time to be the longest wood bridge in the world. It stretches across the origin of the Pend Oreille river from Sagle to Sandpoint.
With a train of tanks in tow, 4412 & 6345 notch up grade as they head westbound through Sagle 8/5/2025
BNSF 105 & 3183 head through Sagle enroute to Boyer yard in Sandpoint to interchange with POVA. This train later ran north to collect loading at Colburn and drop wagons off at Moravia.
105 is a former ATSF GP60M built originally for fast transcontinental intermodal trains. The Sandpoint job is a far cry from the heyday of these locomotives. 3138 is a GP25, built as a GP50 for Santa Fe. This unit has been derated from 3500hp to a non turbocharged 2500hp hence the GP25 designation.

As the Kootenai River Subdivision got a major upgrade with the second bridge at Sandpoint. Crossing the Pend Oreille. Before hotshot Westbound BNSF 6689 (Main One) passes an Eastbound at East Algoma. Now today since the double track main is in place. No more need to stop here. As the funnel no longer owns up to it's name.
Here, Sanders former Reading Buses East Lancs bodied Scania N94UD Omnidekka type number 117 - YN06 JWC “ATHOS” is captured on Mill Road as it passes Cromer & District Hospital whilst working the above Norwich bound Sunday service X44 journey. The current Sanders Sunday timetable on their interworked services 44/X44 offers an hourly frequency of ten journeys each way between Holt and Norwich via Sheringham, Cromer and Aylsham. Forty years ago the winter Eastern Counties Sunday service 758 Sheringham - Norwich timetable provided just four buses each way at four hour intervals, with connections on some of them by service 768 Holt to/from Sheringham. Not the most scenic of locations, but a chance to snap 117 for the first time since 30th June 2018.
There has been a hospital on the Mill Road site since it opened in 1932, replacing facilities on Louden Road. The substantial Sagle Bernstein (£11.4M) and Phyllis Cox (£1.3M) legacies have both been used to fund the new Cromer Hospital. Construction work began in September 2010 and work was completed in March 2012 with the car park opening in July 2012 following demolition of the old 1932 building. Although the new hospital provides many invaluable day procedure services and a minor injuries unit, thus saving North Norfolk residents the long trek to/from Norwich, it no longer caters for inpatients.

While I was in the Pacific Northwest, I had to have some work done on my overlanding truck. I had the good fortune of finding Selkirk Off Road in Sagle, Idaho (up in the panhandle of the state). They are a full-service shop and they specialize in custom fabrication, performance upgrades, suspension systems, and overland outfitting. On top of all that, they treated me like family and I had great experience while waiting for my vehicle to be repaired..

It is 5:41 AM on June 23. A westbound grainer comes off the bridge crossing Lake Pend Oreille just south of Sandpoint, ID. The train is pulled by BNSF 4781and 4651 (GE Dash 9-44CW) and pushed by an unknown unit and the BNSF 7871 (GE ES 44DC).
An unusual allocation, taken in unusual lighting conditions, sees Sanders Optare Solo type number 203 passing Cromer & District Hospital whilst working the above journey on recently renumbered Coasthopper service CH2. The full route between Cromer and North Walsham via Overstrand, Sidestrand, Trimingham, Mundesley, Trunch and Swafield is also currently served by services 5 M-S & 5A Su. Somewhat surprisingly this location has not previously featured amongst my Sanders uploads.
There has been a hospital on the Mill Road site since it opened in 1932, replacing facilities on Louden Road. The substantial Sagle Bernstein (£12M) and Phyllis Cox (£1.4M) legacies have both been used to fund the new Cromer Hospital. Construction work began in September 2010 and work was completed in March 2012 with the car park opening in July 2012 following demolition of the old 1932 building. Although the new hospital provides many invaluable day procedure services and a minor injuries unit, thus saving local residents a long trek to/from Norwich, it no longer caters for inpatients.
"Into the Night" - Redux
♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤
The world at large may rest at night, but not completely for if ever there were an industry that epitomizes “24/7” it would be railroads. There is no distinction between “night” and “day” in the world of railroading. Night is simply the other half of a 24-hour "day" in which to move freight down the line, closer to its destination. E.g., the deltoid beam of a westbound BNSF mixed manifest cuts a blazing swath through the darkness as the crew performs a roll-by inspection of a unit covered hopper train at Algoma (Sagle), Idaho, on what is arguably one of the busiest, if not most congested sections of BNSF’s physical plant. And despite the bottleneck between Sandpoint (just a couple of miles east of Algoma) and Spokane some 56 miles south west, the orchestration of train movement is conducted with arrhythmic staccato harmony by its dedicated workforce, from the dispatcher to the crew driver; from the train crew to the track inspector; from the MOW worker to the signal maintainer; from the locomotive mechanic to the special agent; and, every other employee that ensures that its trains never stop moving any longer than letting another pass.
