Exquisita reconstrucción de una vieja ciudad californiana.

Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese and due to its strategic position across the river from Buenos Aires soon became a smuggling port for pirates. Its sovereignty was contested over the passing centuries and the city changed hands several times between Spain and Portugal. The streets of the Barrio Histórico or historic quarter maintin a lot of the charm of this bygone era. Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Love Life, Love Photography

Back from a couple years ago, digging through the old shots again.

Here is a panorama shot at the morning blue hour with the Mavic 3 drone. This is the Sacramento River, the Tower Bridge and the downtown skyline.

"The bridge style represents a rare use of Streamline Moderne architectural styling in a lift bridge, making it an outstanding expression of the social and architectural climate of the period of construction." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_Bridge_(Sacramento,_California)

One last shot from Sacramento. Now I need to go take more photos :)

The Tower Bridge connecting Sacramento to West Sacramento over the Sacramento River is one of the loveliest and colorful vertical lift bridges that I’ve seen. Most are bridges of this type built during President Roosevelt’s New Deal initiative post-depression in the 1930’s are black or a drab green but the Tower Bridge build in 1934 is beautiful gold yellow color that representative of the area the California State Capitol is located, in the gold rush area. It is a symbol and icon of Sacramento, a unique design of architect Alfred Eichler, who proposed his vision to the bridge engineers. The decorative solid panel obscure the tower post and counterweights. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom @visitsacramento @visitcalifornia #omd #olympus #micro43 #micro43photography #microfourthirds

I went to a festival in a park downtown on Sunday, this woman and several others had a booth where they were demonstrating how these traditional head dresses were made. I spotted her from across the crowd, walked over to her and asked if I could take her portrait, she happily agreed.

Although Sacramento is known for its historic gold rush significance, start of the Central Pacific, and being the capital of California, for railfans it means a lot more than that. As mentioned, the Central Pacific originated in Sacramento, however, many other notable pieces of railroad history included Southern Pacific's large and famous Sacramento Shops which laid next to downtown, SP also had their Roseville Yard to the east, the Western Pacific's Jeffery Car Shops were located in South Sacramento, Sacramento Northern had a massive presence, as well as many other things. However, as time went on many lines would be abandoned and facilities would shut down. This would leave the WP's shops looking like an abandoned lot, the SN was torn out, and SP's once bustling shops became eerily quiet, with the California State Railroad Museum taking over some of the buildings to store equipment. However, next to SP's shops was the station which was still open due to the creation of Amtrak saving passenger rail in the United States. However, eventually it was time for a makeover.

In the early 2010s the original right of way was torn out to be rerouted through an open field between the original platform and the shops. This new design cut out the very sharp s-curve as well as rerouting the mainline around the station platforms, therefore making it easier for freight traffic to navigate through the area. This also meant that Amtrak had their own area to hold their trains and a new and improved platform to replace the aging one from the 1920s. Interestingly, the original platforms were not demolished but rather one was taken over by light rail, and the other was just left abandoned.

Seen in this photo, Amtrak 11 storms out of Sacramento in the early morning with the remains of the SP all around. On the left is where the SP's Sacramento Shops would have once been, and in the background behind the power is the original platforms, with the old right of way no longer traceable.

Train Rides pulled by Granite Rock No. 10 steam locomotive

Train rides include closed coach cars, open-air gondolas and a first-class observation car pulled by either Granite Rock No. 10 steam locomotive or one of our vintage diesel locomotives from the Museum’s collection. The Sacramento Southern Railroad is operated in partnership between the California State Railroad Museum and Foundation.

The William Francis Fratt Building or simply Fratt Building in Old Town Sacramento was the last structure built in Old Sacramento during the 1849-1870 period, being finished in 1870. It was one of the few buildings in Old Town Sacramento to retain most of its original architectural features until sadly just a couple of years prior to its hundredth birthday, in 1968 a terrible fire destroyed most of the structure and the decision was made in 1969 reluctantly to tear down the remains as they were unsalvageable. The Fratt building that is seen in this image was reconstructed as part of the Old Sacramento redevelopment because of its historic significance in the same location. William Francis Fratt arrived in Sacramento California in 1850 from New York and initially was active in the cattle/meat business but during the rest of his life which he remained in Sacramento, he had many successful business venture until his death in 1909. He actually live at the Fratt building until the year of his death 1909 where just prior to his passing he and his wife moved to a new residence on “P” Street. SN 2350, a 40-foot wood-sheathed boxcar, built by the Mt. Vernon Car Co. in 1919, is preserved at California State Railroad Museum; currently awaiting restoration and not on display.

This photo was taken at the “Sacramento Locomotive Works,” which hides a veritable treasure trove for anyone interested in railroads, heavy engineering, or 19th century industrial architecture.

Often known as simply “the Shops,” this historically important complex comes from small beginnings as the Central Pacific Railroad workshops. Within the Shops are the only remaining American railroad structures that were actually standing when the Central Pacific and Union Pacific met in 1869. The Sacramento workshops were later used by the Southern Pacific Railroad for almost 125 years.

The older building, which was built in 1867 on massive redwood piles, is called the Machine Shop, and has undergone different expansions several times to fit the needs of the Shops. It is currently actively used (but not owned) by the State Railroad Museum and houses an enormous range of locomotives (both steam and diesel), carriages, wagons and cabooses, and large machine tools. The newer building, which is nearest to the State Railroad Museum, is known as the Boiler Shop, and was built in 1888. It was used and continues to be used for much of the heavier work in the locomotive production and maintenance process.

Few interesting facts Google told me....

Where are people moving to Sacramento from?

•Across the nation, 3% of homebuyers searched to move into Sacramento from outside metros. San Francisco homebuyers searched to move into Sacramento more than any other metro followed by Fresno and Houston.

•To date, nearly 14,000 families have moved to the Sacramento area from the San Francisco/Bay area.

Where are people from Sacramento moving to?

•63% of Sacramento homebuyers searched to stay within the Sacramento metropolitan area. Boise was the most popular destination among Sacramento homebuyers followed by Dallas and Portland.

The average cost of a house (4 bedroom/2.5 bath; 1678 s/f) is listing for selling for $530,000 in what is considered one of the “better” neighborhoods (low crime rate and above average school rating). Which puts the monthly payments around $3500 + per month.

I have been saying for years now, If I had to buy a house now, I would never be able to be a homeowner. Living in an apartment is just as outpriced as well. Average 2 bedroom apartment is running about $2200 per month. And our gas prices are just as crazy, averaging $4.50 for regular unleaded.

In Lincoln, CA where this photo was taken is just outside of Sacramento in the adjoining county. The housing market for the same size house is about 50-75K more.

My hope is things will get better.
