A male Anna's Hummingbird at Hulls Gulch in Boise, Idaho

There are nice places to go during this year's brutal winter, and the beach at St. Pete's is certainly one of them. Unfortunately, this was taken in 2018 and I'm not there!

Bewick's Wren at Hulls Gulch Reserve, Boise, Idaho

"If you come across a noisy, hyperactive little bird with bold white eyebrows, flicking its long tail as it hops from branch to branch, you may have spotted a Bewick’s Wren. These master vocalists belt out a string of short whistles, warbles, burrs, and trills to attract mates and defend their territory, or scold visitors with raspy calls. Bewick’s Wrens are still fairly common in much of western North America, but they have virtually disappeared from the East."

It's hard to believe that less than 30 mins after this sunrise at Earlsferry in Fife it poured down with rain for the rest of the day. It's true what they say "Red sky in the morning - Shepard's Warning"

A new Dales location for me and ably guided by Terry Robert's of this parish.

The views from the summit are wonderful taking in a wide vista in all directions. The best view is without doubt, looking down the upper Wharfe valley towards Appletreewick. The heather here is a few weeks away from being in full bloom, but it was still nice to capture a little of their early promise.

The gritstone rock outcrops are very similar to those I encountered last week on Derwent Edge in the Peak District. Alas, the sunset was not to be up here, but the light at this point was very nice, although the wind chill factor was certainly unlike a July evening!

Steller's jays are often referred to as "camp robbers" by those out in the West, as they are whip-smart and know how to charm food from campers, hikers, and skiers. I've often observed ski lift operators, who spend a lot of time on the mountain, feed these birds on the fly right out of their upraised hand. Steller's Jay is the only crested jay west of the Rocky Mountains.

"Steller" is the surname of the Naturalist/Botanist/Zoologist who named this bird. There is also a "Steller's Eagle" and "Steller's Sea Cow" among other animals with his name attached. Georg W. Steller was a German-born zoologist and botanist who served as naturalist aboard the ship St. Peter during the years 1741-42, as part of the Great Northern Expedition, which aimed to map a northern sea route from Russia to North America

Photo taken on a cold, snowy morning, Nov 9, 2020. And yes, I did put peanuts out on the window ledge as I'm a softy when I see birds staring at me through the window.

I had seen "What's in Bloom at Ruth Bancroft Garden" for July 2022 and of the 22 flowers that were listed, I had photographed all but one last July. It's hot and muggy today, and I have more excuses not to do something than a compulsion to do something ... so ... maybe there were a few flowers that don't bloom the whole month and aren't in the newsletter or video. Besides, maybe I could improve on what I did take last year.

Well, there were two new ones, one that I can't ID and one that's has three five-inch red and orange flowers grouped together. I only managed two when I looked to my right, and there was an Anna's hummingbird sitting on a leaf of an agave. And he stayed. Before I knew it, I had 24 photos, and I knew that some had to be in focus, and one where he turned just so that his gorget lit. Not the whole gorget, but I'm happy.

Coopers's Hawk at Hulls Gulch Reserve, Boise, Idaho

In the 1800s, Forster’s Terns and several other tern species were shot, stuffed, and mounted onto large hats that were fashionable during the Victorian and Edwardian era millinery trade. This practice ended with the passages of the Migratory Birds Convention Act in Canada (1917) and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the United States (1919).

Baird's Sandpipers breed on Arctic coasts and islands from Greenland to Siberia. They winter in west South America in Ecuador. Peru, Chile and Argentina. Their migratory routes pass through much of western Canada and the US.

First seen in China already in the 4th century B.C, which classifies it as one of the oldest instruments.

A rare sighting of a Harris's Sparrow (Immature) at Hulls Gulch, Boise, Idaho

The Harris's Sparrow is the only North American songbird that breeds in Canada and nowhere else in the world.

The Harris's Sparrow was named after Edward Harris, a friend of John J. Audubon, who collected a specimen in 1843. Audubon eagerly named the specimen thinking he was the first person to do so. Little did he know that Thomas Nuttall collected the bird first in 1834 and named it "Mourning Finch."

I have no idea what they make at this place, but my thought was some up-sized moonshine distillery, or a meth lab. I think this was someplace between Raton and Las Vegas, New Mexico. For sure I-25 and northern New Mexico. I've kept a journal since 2009 with date, odometer, and nearest town. So for a picture like this that was taken in 2012, by the date & time of day it was taken, I can usually figure out roughly where I took the picture.

Wonderful windy day at St.Anne's. Definitely will be going back.

Cooper's hawk on the hunt. It landed here just for a second or two before taking off again in pursuit of its next meal. I was lucky to be looking in that direction or I never would have seen it. All very silent.

Temminck's stint is a small wader. This bird's common name and Latin binomial commemorate the Dutch naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck. The genus name is from Ancient Greek kalidris or skalidris, a term used by Aristotle for some grey-coloured waterside birds.
