The path up the hill is tough, but sometimes it happens more than once (physically and metaphoriacally). In these situations, it helps to have a partner to get up the hill. Whether that is a friend, a group, or God, it helps to have someone to lean on.

Running as a team, you are competing against other teams but also against your own teammates. This makes XC somewhat different than most other team sports, and why running is frequently considered an individual sport.
She had a great race: she won the women's 10 mile run with a ridiculous time of 1:03:47 ! She ran a 6:26 mile... for 10 miles! She finished 9th overall; only 8 men beat her. That rocks!
I run a lot and I can't run a 6:00 mile for one mile! LOL.
She was actually moving so fast that I had a hard time getting a good shot of her. Beautiful and fast!
Note: two years after I got this shot of her, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials. Truly a special athlete!
Despite the rain, I was able to test out the new GoPro. Got to run along the beautiful Buttermilk Trail parallel to the James River, across the Nickel Bridge through Dogwood Dell, Byrd Park, and Maymont Park. Nothing like running in the rain! 😄 #picoftheday #photooftheday #exploreva #instagood #outdoorwomen #outdoorlife #runnergirl #womensrunningcommunity #instarunner #runlikeagirl #instarun #runforestrun #alpinebabes #mountaingirls #neverstopexploring #goprohero4 #goprooftheday #earthgirladventures

adventurewith_ashley: @greatestnanaeva I can only imagine! I've been in crutches twice this year because of injuries from running and it drove me insane! I just recently ran my first marathon at 23. YOu've got your hands full with 5 children!!

A big Thank You to the random strangers who graciously stopped to help me when I collapsed twice during my marathon due to excruciating muscle contractions in my legs. You all had no idea who I was and could have easily ran past me, but you didn't. You all took the time to make sure crazy ol` me was okay and I am forever grateful for the amount of support I saw today. It brought tears to my eyes to see everyone coming together to support one another like family. It was so beautiful and I am glad I was able to be a part of the experience. Just another reason why I love running oh so much. I am proud to say I am from Richmond and can definitely see why Richmond was named America's Friendliest Marathon. I may not have finished this race as fast as I wanted to, but finishing in 4:17:37 (9:49 mile pace) is still pretty damn good despite the amount of pain and problems I had. I may not be able to walk for a while (if you can't tell I'm propping myself up on the fence), but it will be a memorable experience I will never forget. Thanks again Richmond :) #instarunners #runnerscommunity #runnergirl #marathoner #richmondready @rvarunners

adventurewith_ashley: @livefreeandrun thank you! ! I'm unfortunately in crutches today with a possible stress fracture in my foot, but I am glad to say I finished strong despite everything trying to bring me down! Congratulations on finishing as well :)
adventurewith_ashley: @marisaadew thank you! ! Congratulations on finishing as well!! :)
adventurewith_ashley: @oppitz.mo 😄
greatestnanaeva: Anything under a 10 minute mile pace is damn good your doing well, a change in your running training can help, well it did for me my first marathon I took over 5 hours next years one I did in 4 hours 10
adventurewith_ashley: @greatestnanaeva I definitely be more prepared next time! and that is a drastic change in time! that is quite impressive! I am hoping to run it in 4 hours or under next time! :)
The third shot of D.,a 10 Mile run winner from several years ago. She was blindingly fast, powerful and beautiful.
That feeling when the race is over and you can reflect on having completed it. It's a good feeling, in general, regardless of how you performed.
A group of women rounding the turn in the 1600m; this was a group well behind the leaders but still running together at a good clip. They eventually broke up over the final lap, with one memorable pass by a runner not pictured.
For reference, my previous questionnaires: 1 2 3 4
Foods you like, despise, can't eat (allergies, etc.)
I am (mostly) vegetarian. I don't eat much dairy and try to limit wheat and sugar. I don't like mushrooms.
I love chocolate (dark chocolate, fair trade please!), popcorn (I make it on the stovetop with coconut oil), and everything that is bad for me. (I don't say that in a guilty fashion, but in the sense that I love things like milkshakes, which give me a dreadful stomach ache AND clog up my ears.)
Coffee vs. tea? Do you have a favorite kind?
I love both! We've (mostly) stopped drinking coffee at home. I start my day with a minimum of two cups of PG Tips. It's been insanely hot all summer, and I've been treating myself to iced coffee whenever there's a Starbucks handy. I sometimes enjoy a cup of peppermint or chamomile in the evening (when I'm not guzzling wine).
Where do you live? (climate, big city/small town, etc.)
Los Angeles!
Favorite yarns / fabrics? Any yarn you want to try but haven't yet?
I love wool yarn! Merino, BFL, pretty much anything soft and lovely. I'm a sucker for hand-and kettle-dyed yarns. Semi-solids are my favorite but I've come to love some variegateds over time. I have yet to knit with Quince & Co or The Plucky Knitter.
I'm a sucker for quilting cotton, especially vintage flour sack patterns and quirky modern prints like Heather Ross and Michael Miller. I dream of cotton voile.
Crafty pursuits - knit, crochet, spin, sew, quilt, embroider, make friendship bracelets, any of these or others?
I am primarily a knitter. I design patterns, which takes up most of my crafty time. I also enjoy sewing and embroidery, and am trying to figure out cross-stitch (thanks to RunnerGirl Cathy in the last GMDS).
Hobbies/pursuits/proclivities/passions (other than the aforementioned crafty ones, obvs)
I don't really have time for other pursuits! I write when I can and I am thinking of getting more serious about photography. I cook 95% of our meals from scratch, and love both cooking and baking. I've started doing yoga again and I love it (despite being terrible at it).
What do you do in life? (job, career, school, family, etc.)
I am a stay-at-home, home-schooling mom of two: six-year-old Sam and nearly-three Grace. (That's Gracie in the photo.) Will and I have been married for 8 years (our anniversary is October 16) and together for nearly 15 (OMG). In addition to designing, I occasionally do freelance writing jobs (mostly web copy).
What makes you happy?
The way my children play together. Listening to "Gunfight Epiphany" (the theme from Terriers) really loud. Strong coffee and a good pastry.
What (if any!) fall holidays do you celebrate? Halloween, Samhain, Day of the Dead, Thanksgiving, Black Friday? How do you celebrate, if you do?
I am a Halloween nut. As far as I'm concerned, it is a season that starts somewhere between Labor Day and the Autumnal Equinox and goes until the Day of the Dead. We actually considered getting married on Halloween but I insisted that our anniversary be its own day. I love cooking for Thanksgiving and think ALL holidays should be food-centric.

I have two blogs: Through the Looking Glass is my personal blog where I talk about anything and everything, and Little Frog School is about homeschooling (and grandparent-friendly).
I am on Twitter, where I never shut up.
Random favorites -- colors, flavors, scents, books, movies, TV, magazines, genres, time of day, motifs (foxes, bees, squirrels, owls, beavers, mushrooms, bats), etc.
Colors: rusty oranges, turquoise-y blues, teal greens, true reds, greys and browns
Flavors: um. Nothing gross or fake?
Scents: perfume-y things tend to give me a headache. I love the smell of lavender.
Books: my favorite dead authors are Shirley Jackson and James M. Cain. My favorite living authors are Courtney Summers, Nova Ren Suma, and John Green. (Can I include John Green if I've only read Looking for Alaska and Will Grayson, Will Grayson?)
Movies: The Royal Tenenbaums is still my favorite. I really really really loved the 2011 Jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska.
TV: We're watching The Wire right now. I mean, not RIGHT THIS SECOND. But we finished Season 2 a few days ago and are hoping to buy season 3 soon. We've recently caught up on Parks and Rec, and are waiting for season 7 of HIMYM to show up on Netflix. I watch Murder, She Wrote on nights when Will goes out. He likes it well enough, but just doesn't understand how amazing Jessica Fletcher is. I just finished watching Terriers, which was probably the best show ever on television so naturally only lasted 13 episodes. It is pitch-perfect noir.
Magazines: I haven't read a magazine in years. Unless the Interweave Jane Austen Knits count? I've admired Knit.Wear, but I almost never knit from other people's patterns and I really never knit entire sweaters, so I haven't bought it.
Genres: noir, western, gothic horror, assorted other pulp.
Time: when Will gets home from work and I GET A BREAK. (I'm having a rough time with the kids right now.)
Motifs: This time of year I am all about owls and bats and haunted houses. I also love stars (I have some tattooed on my shoulder). I don't know if I have any motifs that are really ME. I mean, I like hedgehogs well enough, and foxes are sweet, but I'm not, like, a Hedgehod Person or a Fox Person.
Foods you like, despise, can't eat (allergies, etc.)
Our family holiday season ended yesterday with my husband's birthday, so I will be going back to a pseudo-Paleo diet with minimal wheat, dairy, and sugar. I am also vegetarian (mostly). That said, I love dark chocolate for a treat.
Coffee vs. tea? Do you have a favorite kind?
I go back and forth between the two. Right now I'm in a coffee phase. I've always been a dark roast girl but recently I've been enjoying medium roasts. I'm as surprised as anyone. When it comes to tea, my favorite is PG Tips and second favorite is English Breakfast. I like chamomile and peppermint in the evenings (not at the same time). I dislike fruity teas and have lost my taste for the Greys, which I used to love.
Where do you live? (climate, big city/small town, etc.)
Los Angeles!
Crafty pursuits - knit, crochet, spin, sew, quilt, embroider, make friendship bracelets, any of these or others?
I am a knitter, primarily. I also sew, mainly children's clothing, quilt tops, and project bags. I love embroidery and am working up the nerve to try cross-stitch (Runnergirl Cathy sent me supplies two GMDSs ago).
Favorite yarns / fabrics? Any yarn you want to try but haven't yet?
I use natural fibers almost exclusively, and love hand dyed yarns (especially semi-solids but I'm coming around to some variegateds). I don't really care for lace weight or super bulky, but like everything in-between. Favorites include Malabrigo Rios, Lorna's Shepherd Worsted, Spud and Chloe, Yarn Pirate BFL, Three Fates eponymous sock. I like quilting cottons (Heather Ross is my very favoritest) and am voile-curious.
Hobbies/pursuits/proclivities/passions (other than the aforementioned crafty ones, obvs)
I love to cook, bake, and take photographs. I've taken up film photography again this year and am hoping to explore it a lot—I was an avid photographer as a teenager, never going anywhere without my 35mm camera, but I slowed down and then switched to digital cameras for the last ten years. I love digital but I want the challenge and creativity that film allows! I still have my Olympus OM-1 35mm, and my mom loaned me her gorgeous zoom lens to play with; for Christmas my in-laws gave me a Holga 120N, which I am learning to use.
What do you do in life? (job, career, school, family, etc.)
I'm a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom of two: Sam, who is six and a half, and Grace, who just turned three and is pictured above. I am on hiatus from knitwear design (though I do have a few designs coming out this year).
Describe your idea of a perfect day where you have no obligations....no work, no kids, no appointments. What would you do?
Assuming that money is no object (within reason), I would have coffee at the fancy French place with the good croissants, get a pedicure, take myself to the movies, and get sushi—preferably with a friend, who would then hang out and knit with me. (I don't really have girlfriends, which is a problem I am trying to fix right now. I know lots of terrific ladies, I just need to spend more time with them!)
What makes you happy?
A nice lazy family day.

Random favorites -- colors, flavors, scents, books, movies, TV, magazines, genres, time of day, motifs (foxes, bees, squirrels, owls, beavers, mushrooms, bats), etc.
colors: turquoise, orange, grey, yellow
flavors: I do not like fake cherry flavor.
scents: please nothing perfumey! I'm really not a big fan of scented things but I love the smell of (dried) lavender and I like citrus oils and fresh flowers and things like that.
movies: Royal Tennenbaums, Lord of the Rings, The Fall, and (bad) action movies! My most recent fave is Lockout.
TV: Buffy will always be my favorite. More recently I love Parks and Rec and Terriers. Nearly everything I love gets cancelled.
magazines: I don't read magazines. I swear I'm not a snob, I'm just too easily distracted. I have read every issue of Jane Austen Knits cover to cover! (And I'm in one of them!) I loved Everyday Food but haven't subscribed since the first year, and of course it's gone now.
genres: Sci-Fi movies (but I can't really read sci-fi books for the most part), westerns, and noir. I read a lot of contemporary YA novels, but YA is really not a genre, so…
time of day: 6:00, when my husband gets home.
motifs: I don't really have A Motif, but I super-love stars and I think hedgehogs are crazy adorable.
etc.: I don't really have an et cetera, I just wanted to be clever by including it.
This is for the larger, A5, size. But specifically designed to fit a Moleskine. I am sewing this month to help raise money for a Triathlon Fundraiser I will be competing in in the fall. The girl this is for is also a runner. I couldn't help myself. I felt compelled to add the runner girl silhouette to the back pocket.
