The Smart Roadster and Roadster Coupé were introduced in 2003, based on a stretched platform of the Fortwo with design by design director Jens Manske. Both the Roadster and Roadster Coupé are available with a removable Targa roof or an electrical softtop.The Roadster is powered by 61 or 82 PS versions of the turbocharged 698cc 3-cylinder Suprex engine in the rear, while the Roadster has only the 82 PS (80bhp) engine. A steering wheel with Formula 1-style gearpaddles, to control the semi-automatic sequential transmission, is optional.

First years sales were double the companies break even estimates, but a leakage problem and other warranty costs reached an average of around 3000 Euros per vehicle, which led to the models withdrawal.

Both the Roadster and Roadster Coupé are available in Brabus-tuned versions with power increased to 74 kW (101 PS; 99 hp). The Brabus versions have a different twin sports exhaust, lower suspension, polished six-spoke aluminum alloy Monoblock VI 17" wheels. front spoiler, side skirts and radiator grille. Exclusive Brabus (Xclusive) interior includes a leather-trimmed dashboard, alloy-effect accent parts, instrument graphics, leather/aluminium gearshift with Brabus labelled starter button, aluminium handbrake handle (which fouls the central armrest), aluminium pedals and Brabus labeled floor mats. The Brabus version also features stronger clamping of the clutch plates and a faster gearchange.

In March 2006 Smart unveiled the Final Edition variant of the Roadster at the Geneva Motor Show, based on the top model Brabus Xclusive.

An additional, UK and Sweden-only 'Finale Edition' was unveiled in April 2006. This model came in a variety of colour combinations, including an exclusive speed silver and black Tridion with 17-inch Runline alloys and 'flow silver' interior components. It also featured leather door and cockpit trim and central armrest.

The last one built now resides in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

The Smart Roadster in the photo has a Mercedes 3 cylinder 698cc (0.7L) engine producing between 82-101hp depending on the actual configuration. The little engine is highly efficient, able to produce 144hp/litre (in terms of engine size) and that is almost double in comparison with a classic Porsche Boxter standard which was producing around 82hp/litre (in terms of engine size). Despite the small engine, given that the weight of the car is only around 790-840kg this car still produces a respectable 123hp/tonne which while not being in Porsche territory, it is in line with what you would get from a Mazda MX5 Roadster.
