Ruby-throated Hummingbirds fly straight and fast but can stop instantly, hover, and adjust their position up, down, or backwards with exquisite control. They often visit hummingbird feeders and tube-shaped flowers and defend these food sources against others. You may also see them plucking tiny insects from the air or from spider webs.

And with this fine immature Ruby Throat loading up on nectar and leaving it will be early April before I see them again.
Last summer, we had five hummingbird feeders scattered around our yard. Later in the summer, with all the added youngsters, the air was full of them.
I caught this female as she approached a feeder.

This was the first time that I saw a hummingbird at the Diascia flowers and was only able to get this one shot before it flew off.

I’ve got a love/hate relationship with these guys, and pretty much hummers in general. While rather fearless, approaching quite closely, they’re often very mistrusting, and the slightest movement can scare one off. They also feed for exasperatingly short periods of time; this guy only comes in to the feeder for five to ten seconds before zooming off, and only visits every thirty or so minutes, often longer. But, when an opportunity turns into a success, it’s definitely worth it.

My hummingbirds returned in early April and are now dancing and mating with the females who choose them or not. One of my pleasures in life is watching them.
After many battles it appears this immature male has won the battle of the back porch feeder.
Have a great weekend my friends! ~
Now that the mature males have left for Central America the young immature males are enjoying the once forbidden flowers that belonged to the males.
Ruby-Throated Hummingbird (female or juvenile?)
I was waiting by a tree near the water which the catbird frequents. This beautiful hummingbird showed up, rested on the branch for a few seconds, then took off... Late afternoon.

Finally after close to a month of trips to go see her, The chicks make an appearance. They can't be more then a couple days old. Might be the first time I shot anything above 5.6. It was very tough to get focus, A fill flash was used
No more daily battles with the mature males as they leave for Central America like clockwork on August 31st. Little immature males and females will hang out till October and leave until late April.
I thought "Look through any window" was fitting as this was taken through my back porch window and I have several windows with flowers and or feeders close so I can observe these jewels even when I am inside.
