Even with today's dreary rain I still went out to watch and photograph Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. Very challenging to get sharp images with a shutter speed down to 1/500th of a second.
Messed up on the lips and had to wipe here clean anyway; not so heavy on the eyeliner this time. However, the lips color refuses to photograph correctly, it's the color of a varnished pinewood knot
Ruby came in for a lump check. She is 7 years old but suffers from serious arthritis. Poor gorgeous bubba <3
Ruby is a six year old jack russell terrier with an anal gland infection. She was treated medically with antibiotics.

Strobist: Four 580EXII on stands surrounding the feeder at 1/64 +1/3 at around 10" away. Waited until the ambient dropped well below the flash exposure, 1/200 @ f/11, ISO 100 to knock the background down. Triggered with Pocket Wizards.

This location opened in fall 2005.
Ruby is now a 14 month old Labrador / German Shepheard cross bitch whom a friend of mine aquired very recently due to her previous owner's partner developing an alergy to her. She is a very agile bouncy affectionate dog and seems to be permanantley happy. She is also a rather large which often results in a heap of person and dog.......
She is seen here in a field on the hottest day of 2011 sofar totally unperturbed about the heat and waiting intentlly for her ball to launched. She is exceptionally inteligent and picks up instructions and keeps to them after only a couple of attempts

In relation to my last post...........great news, Ruby came home from the vets yesterday.
This is a gorgeous Lollypot that Ruby's family sent to me as a thank you for Willy donating his blood.
It was so thoughtful of them, we were so pleased to be able to help.
I hadn't know that cat's were able to donate blood. The vet told us they need to be under 8 years of age & approximately 5 kilos.
Willy had to be sedated & had his fluffy collar shaved.

Ruby Dancers, as I watch you
Twisting in the breeze,
Your tiny ballet slippers

So now, the entire front-garden

Ruby Grapefruit through falling water. I have used Photoshop to remove flash artifacts, so I apologize if that is obvious in some of these.
You seldom get the perfect capture in these experiments, but sometimes you get tantalizingly close.

Ruby performs at the "Spring Fling" burlesque show at the the Gibson Lounge, Maggie Mae's, Austin, Texas.
Ruby-throated Hummingbird at Heinz NWR. Not a very good shot because he is very small and was far away, but it's not often that you see a hummingbird perched in a tree.
