It was a small price to pay for the freedom of my old buddy...
And I'll be testing my new toy next week when I visit Brügge/Bruges and Lüttich/Liège in Belgium.

After watching this Adorama video I switched to a larger GLOW foldable beauty dish and got much better soft light.

sadly i don't know the species - if somebody knows it please left a comment :-). Thanks for your help.
SetUp:
Taken from a treepod with the help of an permanent external led light in the early dawn with low ISO and no wind. Also low shutter speed with 10 sec timer for reducing vibrations.
Apperture could be two steps higher but now it is as it is.
Exposure metering set on a single field in the flower and here it is nearly out of the box. Only minor changes with Nikon NX studio.
Z 105 lens users need other apperture settings .
Please switch of your VR mode of the lens on the tripod - otherwise it can be damaged (RTFM to save money) - no joke, i payed for this issue.
The manual was nowhere to be seen, the controls are labeled in cryptic french but we could get this puppy rollin.

i will use whatever light (be it available/ambient light, strobes or off camera flashes) to my advantage. why limit yourself ?
strobist.com how to : 1 580EX with homemade beauty dish (set manually at 1/8 at 24mm), handheld by a friend on the top left. shot with 17-40mm f4.0 L USM at 17mm iso 200 1/80 f5.6 trigger via canon ste-2.
additional notes :
a. recommend to use lens hood at wide angle.
b. a 26" inch diameter dish would be ideal, shoot not more than 3ft from the subject, placement right above the forehead - else it wont look so flattering.
c. personally, you don't need to use aperture more than f8 because it will drain the flash batteries and might be an overkill for a small confine space.
d. always good to refer to 580EX manual if you are not sure. i rtfm :S
RTFM, even if it is all in Japanese; I'm sure I'll pick it up as I go along.
Macro shot of Sigma Tele-converter manual taken with Pentax K10D and Vivitar 1:1 100mm MF Macro lens (aka Plastic Fantastic), Sunpak Flash fired 1/4@50mm with diffuser.
By reading the manual (RTFM!) of my digital camera I found a way to use Flash without totally destroying the ambiance.
Direct flashing is still not perfect. See the reflection in my glasses for example. But in general I like this setting.
It's all hocus-pocus to me... I just followed the directions. "RTFM" and all that... (yes, it's working fine and is a big improvement over the old one)

This is what happens when you don't RTFM and accidentally use the 6x4.5 frame counter window instead of the 6x6 window. I realised something was amiss when the counter reached 13. :-)
Luckily, I'm quite pleased with the results I got.
Il est deja difficile de croire ce que l'on pense nous-memes (de nous-memes et des autres)...
Alors n'imaginez meme pas un instant, pouvoir croire ce que pensent les autres (eventuellement de nous-memes)...

A rework of the similar shot posted several weeks ago. Taken over the A6 at Chinley in the Peak District
Looking at the EXIF data I spent nearly an hour and a half on the bridge holding the camera on the guardrail with no tripod waiting for the light to change sufficiently to get the road and valley, then the sunset, and much much later, the light trails.
This version represents a significant time investment - perhaps the most I have spent on a single image. In the first version the light trails were as shot, with 20 second exposures, but these are actually stroked paths. There is absolutely no way to tell them apart other than that these are perhaps too good to be true.
I learnt a new trick or two in the making of this image. It dawned on me that when using the Clone and Healing brush tools, using lighten or darken brush blending modes would very often completely negate the need for a mask. So long as the source pixels are darker than the target pixels, but not as dark as the area you don’t want to cover, then ‘darken’ works perfectly. I never get too anal about accuracy , finding it so much easier to sort things out later with layer masks.
The other trick was a matter of RTFM to suss out how to make the stroked path taper along its length, which was simply achieved with a few Brush Shape Dynamic settings.

The lab returned my negatives is one huge strip, so I had to cut them where I felt it was best. I then cropped some of them (such as this one) in order to get the best I could from them.

first time out with my new 6D today. spent 2 days RTFM and getting to know my way round the settings and controls(still lots to suss and experiment with) but I can say I;m a happy bunny so far, even though I only managed half a dozen keepers out of 400 shots today I learned a lot and I should be up to speed before long.

You know, ever since I found The Chronicles of Prydain in the library in grade school, the use of the word "Bauble" instantly draws up the mental picture of Princess Eilonwy and her bauble.
So this is me blowing out the sun with a shutter speed of 1/2500th and an aperture of f/4.0. Because I RTFM, I discovered that the flash can't actually dump out a full powered burst in 1/2500th of a second, so I bumped the power down until it would fit the burst within the time allotted.
I ran a PC extension cord to the flash, so this is triggered by wires, not optically.
And let me tell you, it sucked trying to get this composed. But it looks absolutely CRAZY. I love it. :D

I have been tagged again :). So now i have to write 10 things about myself and tag 10 more people to do the same. I cant remember what i wrote last time, so i'm probably just going to repeat myself :). Also i know a few people have already been tagged, so if i tag you and you've already done it/don't want to do it, don't worry just ignore this :).
1. I have a phobia (well maybe not that bad, a severe dislike) of anything going near my belly button, it's weird i don't know why, it just freaks me out, i hate the feel of it lol.
2. THIS song is stuck in my head right now :), so catchy, i may have to do a shot inspired by this video
3. I'm an idiot, silly things make me laugh, like when you get a package in the post and it says STD on the label :), or when my dad gets a letter from the VAT controller (makes me think of thomas the tank engine)
4. I'm usually quite a laid back person, but when i get stressed out i get a little OCD
5. I go through phases of different food addictions, M&Ms, Bacon sandwiches, at the moment its a bowl of frosties :)
6. Bill Bailey is my hero, id love to see him live again.
7. I'm really bad in social situations, i'm incredibly shy, kinda silly seen as i'm a barmaid :P, but i guess thats why people sometimes get the wrong impression of me.
8. I love listening to my ipod on the bus, but i hate it when other people play music on their phones so everyone can hear, there's a reason why earphones were invented! not everybody likes Basshunter and N-dubz.
9. I never RTFM, i really should do though.
10. Spoons are my favourite thing (the cuddly kind) :)

Explore! #292 25th May 2009
In April, when Sony announced the A9, just based on the specs, I said it was the death of the DSLR.
Now, I've played with my A9 for a couple of weeks, and even though I don't yet have all the right lenses with long focal length, I can already see this is every bit as good as the specs implied.
I think the term "mirrorless cameras" will disappear from use in the next 2-3 years. Because, by then, all cameras will be mirrorless, and there will be no need to say a camera is mirrorless, when the only kind of cameras being made is mirrorless. (Even the Leica M and SL cameras, with their irrelevant sub-0.25% market share, are mirrorless, anyway.)
The real news is, the A9 is simply the most advanced 35mm camera ever built, and the final nail in the DSLR coffin. It's over for the venerable DSLR. Unless Nikon and Canon have a death wish, they must be working around the clock to bring out their own mirrorless cameras to at least put up a semblance of a fight. But the reality is, Sony has already won the battle.
With my Nikon D3S, Nikon D4 and Canon 1DX II, I had to RTFM and spend a lot of experimenting with autofocus to reach even a basic level of competence with autofocusing. With the Sony A9, all I did was put the camera in AF-C, and keep shooting. I can't believe how well the A9 nails the initial focus, then tracks it as my subject moves around.
The efficiency of initial focus acquisition, the ability to track, the accuracy of focus and the high frame rate, are all nothing short of stunning. Not to mention the high res viewfinder, silent shutter and the high frame rate with zero blackouts.
Once someone experiences these first hand, I can't understand how anyone would go back to a DSLR. Or a rangefinder or a pin hole camera or anything else.
The Sony 24MP full-frame, stacked CMOS sensor also opens new capabilities that were simply impossible before, and the DSLR mechanism is imply incapable of taking advantage of Sony's sensors.
The problem for DSLR technology is, not only the Sony A9 is ahead, but the DSLR technology can NEVER catch up with what the A9 can already do today, never mind where the A9 is going in the next 3-4 years: which is much, much further along.
It's over for the DSLR, even if Nikon / Canon keep flogging a dead horse for another 2-3 years, much as Leica has been flogging the Rangefinder for a decade. But Leica had the benefit of gullible loyal customers who didn't know their pockets were being picked. Nikon and Canon don't have that benefit, so they cannot sit and hope for customers with holes in their pockets.
I won't bother pointing out all the features of the A9 – there are plenty of blogs that do a pretty good job of it. So I will just say that between the A9 and the rumored 60MP A7R-III due to come out later this year, Sony is the King of 35mm photography.
There are always going to be some losers who will want to point out some drawback or the other in the A9. These are the same people who would discount the entire Apollo 11 mission, because the Eagle lunar module squeaked while landing on the moon. They too, are irrelevant.
One other point to note: for all these technical advancements, the A9 is also quite a bit cheaper than the CaNikon DSLRs, it is also significantly lighter. See the table below that compares how a Sony A9 compares with a Canon 1DX II.
After several hours of lugging around, the extra 500-750 grams makes a substantial difference, believe me!

After RTFM lots of times, familiarizing myself with all of the remote triggering features of this speedlite, this old brain of mine was beginning to fry. Loving the featureset, just hope I can remember most of them on the fly when out on the job. That's why I need to continually play, and make worthless images when I'm on my own :)
Canon 5D3, 1x handheld 600EX-RT and another 600EX-RT through umbrella to camera right, ST-E3-RT on camera in relay mode, tripped via me holding the said handheld 600EX-RT. Both speedlites were set to fire, the system can be set to fire any flash in the group, or work as relay only, without flash.
