So, what do you do when you need to access peripherals on Windows XP
x64, but the vendors have yet to release a 64-bit compatible version of
their driver?
Switch to Linux? Same problem, if vendor doesn't open source their
driver.
Complain? Tried that, vendor said they don't support 64-bit and they
considered the whole problem my own fault.
Improvise? The pic attached shows my Win32 (Windows XP) Peripheral
Breakout Box. All you need is an old laptop and a copy of Windows XP
(or other vendor supported OS). Throw in Remote Desktop or just an
rsync folder and ssh server, and you've got everything you need.
The better solution, which I will hopefully be able to implement soon,
is to throw Windows XP x64 in the "Great Idea, Bad Implementation,
Abysmal Follow-through" bin.

though i'm not paranoid, i do have a fairly solid backup regime for all my photos, projects, and my meticulously ripped music collection. on a regular basis (no later than once every two weeks), i run a few batch scripts that first rsync important parts of my C drive (mainly my firefox and thunderbird profile folders, as well as my main windows user account folder) to the internal 1TB drive, and then rsync that whole drive to the 1TB external USB backup drive. (if i WAS paranoid i'd then take that USB drive to a remote location and rotate it with another USB drive...but i'm not quite there yet)
for rsyncing on windows i use the excellent cwRsync, but modified with UTF-8 cygwin dll to handle files/folders with non-latin characters.

2 terabyte NAS.
Not having a proper backup procedure is a no-no, and I've been living dangerously for about a year now.
Now I've got my Mac Mini backing up to this drive through Time Machine, my Ubuntu laptop backing up through dejà-dup, and my external USB 3.0 hard drive backing up manually through rsync. Went from no backup at all to multiply redundant backup in a couple days.
One neat thing the StorCenter ix2 has is that you can enable SSH access by navigating to diagnostics.html on its IP. Once logged in you get a fully-functional Linux system with network and hard disk access, complete with web server, python, crontab, wget, and what not. Christmas time again. That box is geeking me out. Will be replacing my dual p3 box from 1999 with many dangling cables (4 internal, 3 external usb/firewire disks).
Challenger, Atlantis and Blackbird in that order, running Gentoo happily :)
They were all Dual Xeons with HT, 3GHz, 4 GB RAM 2x 73 GB SCSI HDDs. Challenger was our internal webserver, download mirror, Gentoo rsync & distfiles mirror. Atlantis was our gateway box handling DNS, DHCP, iptables and Blackbird was the sound encoder and was the laziest of the three.
The old "NAS" was a rehabilitated iBook G4 with a 500GB Firewire drive. Shown here, it's draining its contents into the new system.
I was hoping that the DS210j would support HFS+, which is what the USB/Firewire drive is using. But, alas, I read that that would take some cross-compiling and kernel module hackery, so I figured it would just be best to rsync the old drive into shares on the new rig. Significantly slower, but the old "NAS" is still online, so it doesn't really matter.

I just love a good pattern ... this does it for me!
I've been working to get my backup strategy going again - what a nightmare! Using rsync from Mac OSX to a windows share nicely copies the files up but the whole point of using rsync is that it should only copy the new changes subsequent times, not the whole set of files! After much wasting of time I found that the dates on the files created via rsync on the windows share were all (something like) Jan 1, 1969! Grrrrr - I wish I knew why these files had the wrong date! My guess is windows is doing something incorrect. My work around was to pull the files using synctoy ... 40+ gig took about 6 hours over a 100mb line.
This is the "Message of the Day" (or MOTD) graphic that shows up when I log into my office server to do backups.
My server was, at the time, named "LeChiffre" after a James Bond nemesis, so I thought this graphic was appropriate. The quote is from the film Casino Royale.

I just love being lazy. The big tower had a RAID5 hardware controller with 3 SCSI drivers, with NTFS. Windows lost his mind and could not see the volume. So I took the RAID card, plugged into a Shuttle, booted a Linux Live CD with a NTFS driver, and rsync'ed the information out.
The disks where powered by the tower, the shuttle powered the card.
