A set of 6 Royal Mail postage stamps designed for a RSA competition brief, aimed at supporting and encouraging people to get involved with ecologically friendly projects.

A penny from every stamp is invested in a UK ecologically friendly project run or supported by Royal Mail, which is generally portrayed as a greener way to send packages and letters than via a courier. The aim of the stamps is to celebrate the UK entering the ecological era, and to suggest taking responsibility.

For the second time this year a University of Salford student has won a prestigious Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) Design Directions award.

BA (Hons) Product Design student, Ricky Lam, won the RSA award for his design to protect against vehicle-borne terrorist attacks. The design prevents unauthorised vehicles from accessing a private area and traps suspicious vehicles that could potentially harm the public.

Greyfriars Bobby was a wee Skye terrier who pined at his masters graveside in the nearby cemetery.

William Brodie RSA designed this drinking fountain at the instigation of Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts, the wealthy daughter of a former Edinburgh Lord Provost.

The Town Council granted her permission to erect the fountain opposite Greyfriars Churchyard where Bobby, a Skye Terrier maintained a vigil, pining at his master's graveside until his demise. It was unveiled on November 15, 1873.

There are bronze plaques with the coat of arms of Edinburgh and of Burdett-Coutts (a stag's head and arrow for Coutts, and three martlets for Burdett.) It has an octagonal lower drinking basin for dogs, and an upper spout for humans. In 1957 the water supply was discontinued due to public health concerns.

The main plaque on the fountain reads:

"A TRIBUTE TO THE AFFECTIONATE FIDELITY OF GREYFRIAR'S BOBBY. IN 1858, THIS FAITHFUL DOG FOLLOWED THE REMAINS OF HIS MASTER TO GREYFRIAR'S CHURCHYARD AND LINGERED NEAR THE SPOT UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1872 WITH PERMISSION, ERECTED BY THE BARONESS BURDETT- COUTTS"

Also on the bronze sculpture: "GREYFRIAR'S BOBBY, FROM THE LIFE JUST BEFORE HIS DEATH" and "W.H. Brodie Sc RSA 1872".

Kitchen designer Johnny Grey has a new concept called the Four Generation Kitchen – “a space for all ages and abilities”. Here he is explaining it at a super dinner during LDF 17 hosted by Veronika Miller, of Modenus, the American marketing network, and inventor of the international “blog-tours”. Guests included members of the US kitchen and bathroom industry, and UK bloggers and “influencers”.

Johnny is working on his 4G kitchen ideas with Newcastle University and the National Innovation Centre for Ageing. He said: “I want to democratise the ‘one-off’ kitchen sector, and to include disability access and age-friendly features without it being obvious. “

Johnny is one of the most dynamic people in kitchens today – with a romantic start to his career. His first project - aged 17 - was for his eminent aunt, the cookery writer Elizabeth David. In the 1980s, Johhny adopted the ‘unfitted’ kitchen - free-standing furniture introduces “physical space and a natural flow of movement” he says.

Johnny has created for an RSA Design Challenges - a competition for students, who are asked for an inclusive, accessible and multi-generational kitchen space or component, that works for all ages as well as disabled and non-disabled families.

This competition opens for submissions in January 2018, and closes in March. Winners will be announced in May.
