Vacation Bible School - Kickoff
Sunday Night - June 27th 2010 - we had our "kickoff" to VBS at Vanna UMC.
Our "regular kids" as well as our "grownup kids", had a WONDERFUL time . . . beautiful bonfire (thanks, weather, for the slight break in the heat after dark) - - - cookout and sleepover.
This year's theme was "Camp E.D.G.E." with E.D.G.E. being an acronymn for "Experience and Discover God Everywhere".
I was lucky enough to be there every evening except Wednesday so I got a lot of great pictures. These are from "Day One" . . .

Mother Kildeer with her babies and an egg that hasn't yet hatched.
This *may* be one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced in all of my birding activity.
A friend of mine discovered this Mother Kildeer with four eggs yesterday (June 21st 2009) in one of the gravesites in our church cemetery in Vanna.
She took me out to see it tonight after Vacation Bible School, and we discovered that three of the four eggs had hatched today and the babies were all cuddled up together, next to the unhatched egg.
Mom was having a FIT!! Her behavior was amazing . . . she would flop on the ground and act like she had a broken wing, dragging herself a few feet away - - - always in the opposite direction of the babies - as if she wanted us to follow her.
After a very short time, the little birds got up and stretched their legs and wings and started moving away from the unhatched egg into the grass around where they were born . . . Mom called to them over and over and was clearly MOVING them . . . it was amazing. I had no idea that ANY baby birds could get up and walk the same day they were born!!!

These are the supports for the Cromer's Mill Covered Bridge in Franklin County, GA where I now live. The support design for the bridge is called "Town Lattice", and it's one of my favorites!!!
