The world famous willow tree photographed by me from the banks of Lake Wānaka , South Island, New Zealand. Situated in Roy's Bay at Otago, the Wānaka Tree or “That Wānaka Tree” as it's locally known is one of the most photographed trees in the world.
So sad that, since this photograph was taken, the tree has been vandalised with some branches sawn off. Hopefully, it will recover which is more than can be said for the Sycamore Gap tree or Robin Hood tree which was a sycamore tree standing next to Hadrian's Wall near Crag Lough in Northumberland, England.
Morning image from Roys Bay of the Lake Wanaka foreshore before too many are around. Snow covered Mt Alta and other peaks on the other side of the lake lay between us and Mt Aspiring National Park. In the centre is one of the house boats that can be hired. Although not a big watercraft person this seems like an ideal way to relax and spend some time exploring the lake.
It has been a dry summer and autumn in the center of the south island of New Zealand and the water level in Lake Wanaka is low enough to expose the ground around the most photographed tree in New Zealand. Sadly the tree is missing one of its lower branches which was removed by vandals a year or so ago.
This often photographed tree is just along the shores of Lake Wanaka, not far from the downtown area. If you look closely, you can see a few cormorants roosting in the tree.
Alas, we never quite got the skies we were hoping for. Guess we'll just have to visit again! Maybe when there's less mosquitoes...although it might be a bit colder then. :)
Wanaka, a resort town on New Zealand's South Island, is set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes.

This lone tree lies on the shores of Roys Bay at Lake Wanaka, NZ. I walked there before sunrise thinking I would be alone, but to my delight, was greeting by a couple of other photographers. The sleeping birds lay still and until the sun woke them up and they flew away.

The Hand that Nurtures, a sculpture by Llew Summers, at Wanaka, New Zealand
'The contrast between the solidity and weight of this solid concrete sculpture and the tenderness of feeling which it portrays makes this work special. It symbolises notions of nurturing, safety and protection as well as friendship, openness and honesty.
Commissioned by the Aspiring Arts & Culture Trust and unveiled March 10, 2005.'
