There were several excellent locations on this stretch but bushes were taking over by the time I took this and I think they have all been lost since

The Belmond Royal Scotsman is a Scottish overnight luxury train, started in 1985 by GS&WR (Great Scottish and Western Railway Co.), and run since 2005 by Belmond Ltd. Its itineraries include 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7-night journeys around the Scottish Highlands, visiting castles, distilleries and historic sites. Once each year, it also makes a 7-night journey around the whole of Great Britain.

Believe it, first time for everything. First time I’ve managed to bag 1H79 in complete sun at Craigo. Running to Keith, a rather clean looking 66746 leading.

Only a brown shed, and already, bored of thinking of the Scotsman! Ahahahha, seen to a lot and a lot of times…..

Premium light for Royal Scotsman liveried GBRf 66746 which again worked 4F62 East Midlands Gateway - Seaforth Container terminal this evening.

GBRf's 66746 is seen just North of Blackford with the Royal Scostman stock and 66743 in tow. The train was running as 5Z41 from Hamilton to Gleneagles for the last tour of the 2019 season.

 

This extra tour will see the luxury train and it's passengers visit Keith, Inverness, Invergordon, Kyle of Lochalsh, Boat of Garten and Dundee before finishing up in Perth on Thursday. The train will then run to Craigentinny before either running South or to E.G. Steele's in Hamilton to await either onward movement or be stabled until next year.

 

The 2020 season will begin on the 3rd of April with tickets for the first tour on sale for the small amount of £3,600 per passenger, though it's already fully booked.

GBRf 66743 'Royal Scotsman' became the first loaded train to traverse the Haydock Branch in 2022 when it worked 6F67 this morning. Seen here in frosty conditions from Ashton Road bridge starting to propel down the Hanson Branch.

Sporting clean Belmond Royal Scotsman livery, GBRf 66746 slows for its pathing stop at Winwick Junction.

The sun came out and went back in three times after 4F62 appeared from under the bridge such were the stormy conditions, so fortunate to get this.

9.8.2016. In some dappled evening light, GBRF Class 66 No 66743 hauls the luxury 'Royal Scotsman' up Gamston Bank with a York - Dereham working.

As usual, 66743 was on the back.

GBRf Class 66/7 No. 66746 in Royal Scotsman livery, climbs the last few yards to the 1,350ft summit at Corrour with 6E45, the 08:07 Fort William Alcan to North Blyth empty alumina tankers on 19th April 2023.

66746 heads the 1H86 0815 Spean Bridge to Fort William past Loch Dubh..thanks to MF for the location guide!

66743 leads a short formed 6S45 0715 North Blyth to Fort William Alcan past the now closed Bedlington North box.

 

January 16th, 2025

after a fine week on Skye we departed : direction Moray Firth and then to Royal Deeside - here are photos from the driving day from Portree to Nairn - again wonderful landscape, a great train line - and lucky to see the Royal Scotsman near Achanalt

The hills west of Loch Treig provide the backdrop, with a marshy hollow the frame, for RS liveried 66746 working 6E45 0807 Fort William to North Blyth Alcan empties on the climb to Corrour station.

On a very nice morning 66743 leads the Royal scotsman towards Edinburgh.

1H78 Kyle of Lochalsh to Boat Of Garten Gbrf. Class 66 in Royal Scotsman livery heads south towards Rose St curve with the Royal Scotsman four nights Scotlands Classic Splendours tour.

18th February 2018 - The Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) Class 66 (or JT42CWR) are Co-Co diesel locomotives built by EMD for the European heavy freight market. Here we see 66709 in her MSC Sorrento promotional livery and 66746. GB Railfreight has taken over the contract to operate the Belmond Royal Scotsman from West Coast Railways and this is one of the locomotives that have been repainted for that very purpose. Both are seen here at Seaforth docks waiting to load up at the Bio-Mass terminal.

37423 has just left Kyle of Lochalsh on 2/6/1990.

GBRF's first day as traction provider for the Royal Scotsman sees 66746, recently repainted into RS colours, passing through Princes Street Gardens with the 1H79 Edinburgh - Keith on 18th April 2016.

Am Abend des 9. Mai hatten wir noch den Belmond Royal Scotsman auf dem Programm, für diesen hatten wir eine Stelle bei Newmill ausgesucht. Wenige Minuten nachdem wir an der Stelle angekommen sind, kam die Kastanienbraune Class 66 mit den 70 jährigen Wagen um die Kurve.

Running in the path of 2H87, 37414 leaves Achnasheen with the ‘The Highlander’ excursion. Not been able to find out much more about this excursion other than it returned back towards Inverness later that day.

 

In the background, 37114 also leaves with 1Z99 09.40 (Suns) Kyle to Boat of Garten Royal Scotsman. Despite appearances it wasn't a previously unreported colossal TnT move....

 

A rather fine day in the Highlands though.
