I was experimenting with the focus stacking technique to keep the background out of focus. This was the result.

Walking down the street I was so surprised to notice this wonderful rose...

"Which is loveliest in a rose? Its coy beauty when it's budding, or its splendor when it blows?"

(George Barlow 1847-1913)

I have a complicated relationship with the rose. When I was younger and more cynical, I disliked them - for the fact that they represented romantic love, and beauty, and all those other cliches. But I've softened, especially now we have our garden, which is full of roses of all hues and characters.

And in fact, if I had to pick any flower, I would probably pick a rose. Not elegant and effortlessly stylish like the tulip, or uncomplicated and girlish like the freesia, or exotic and unusual like the orchid, or perky and optimistic like the daffodil, the rose is very 'me'. It's neither in not out of fashion, just sort of there. It's not always pretty, but it can look rather splendid when it chooses. It needs cutting down to size now and again when it's getting too big for its boots (and is all the better for it). It's conventional in an old fashioned sort of way. It works really well alone, but isn't averse to company of its own sort. It's not exactly modest and can be a bit of a climber. It's high maintenance but thinks it's low maintenance. It also looks great in red.

Looking forward to spring!
