Das Schloss Brandis ist eine Schlossanlage und ein ehemals bedeutender Feudalsitz in

Maienfeld im schweizerischen Kanton Graubünden.

Anlage

Die Anlage besteht aus einem älteren Nordwesttrakt mit T.urm und einem jüngeren S.üd-

w.esttrakt.

Die beiden parallel zueinander liegenden Trakte sind durch einen Hof voneinander getrennt.

Die gesamte, ungefähr quadratische Anlage war durch G.raben und R.ingmauer von der

übrigen S.tadt getrennt. Von der vermutlich im 14. oder 15. Jahrhundert entstandenen Um-

fassungsmauer sind noch Bruchstücke erhalten.

Der T.urm stammt etwa aus der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts, die übrigen Bauten entstanden

zu verschiedenen Zeiten im Verlauf des 14. und 15. Jahrhunderts. Ein bedeutender Bauherr

war zu Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts Friedrich VII. von T.oggenburg, der das „Neue Schloss“

erbauen liess.

Um 1.4.6.5 wurden unter den Freiherren von Brandis unter anderem die K.apelle erbaut.

Unter ihnen erhielt das Schloss seine heutige Gestalt. Der Name ist erst seit dem 19.

Jahrhundert üblich.

N.ordwesttrakt

**************************************************************************************************************

Das dominierende Element des alten Traktes ist der viereckige quadratische H.auptturm

mit einer Seitenlänge von etwa 12,5 Meter. Die Mauerstärke des sechsstöckigen T.urmes

beträgt 2,5 Meter, der ursprüngliche Hocheingang lag in der Höhe des dritten Geschosses.

Der Zugang erfolgte über eine A.ussentreppe. Die meisten Fenster wurden nachträglich

eingebrochen, ebenso der ebenerdige heutige Eingang. Gekrönt war der T.urm von einem

Z.innenkranz; das heutige Dach stammt aus dem Jahr 1.9.0.6.

Das Turminnere wurde 1.8.6.8 und 1.9.7.5 umgebaut. Südöstlich angrenzend an den T.urm

liegen die Reste des «alten Schlosses». Das auf der anderen Seite liegende Gebäude mit

dem Restaurant wurde wohl über den Ruinen mittelalterlichen Bauten errichtet.

S.üdwesttrakt

Der gegenüberliegende S.üdwesttrakt, das «N.eue Schloss» oder «T.oggenburgerhaus»

verfügt noch über mittelalterliche Bausubstanz, wurde aber 1.9.7.1 zu einem Mehrfamilien-

haus umgebaut. Ein bastionsartiger R.undturm, der so genannte F.rauenturm an der S.üd-

ecke wurde 1.8.6.0 zusammen mit Partien des B.erings und der T.oranlage geschleift.

M.alereien

**************************************************************************************************************

Die Reste von Wandmalereien im 5. Geschoss des N.ordwesttrakts aus dem Anfang

des 14. Jahrhunderts stammen vom W.altensburger M.eister – einem Maler unbekannter

Herkunft.

Es sind die einzigen bekannten profanen Malereien des Malers. Entdeckt wurden sie

1.8.9.8 von Johann Rudolf Rahn.

Abgebildet sind unter anderem M.inne- und W.irtshausszenen, B.ilder einer W.einlese

und aus der S.amsonsgeschichte.

Das Stockwerk war ursprünglich in mehrere Z.immer eingeteilt. Mit der Entfernung von

Wänden zwischen den einzelnen Räumen wurden auch die M.alereien darauf zerstört.

Entgegen anderer Vermutungen kommen als Auftraggeber die Freiherren von V.az nicht in

Frage, da diese nie im Besitz der Burg waren.

In einem N.ebenraum finden sich W.anddekoration mit marmorartigen Q.uadermotiven.

Geschichte

Erbaut wurde Schloss Brandis wohl im 13. Jahrhundert auf Eigengut durch die Herren von

A.spermont. 1282 hielt Heinrich von A.spermont in seinem Testament fest, dass im Falle

seines Todes sein Bruder Egilolf Burg und Herrschaft Maienfeld erben sollte.

Nach dem Tod Heinrichs gelangte denn auch Egilolf bereits 1.2.8.4 in den Besitz der Burg.

Am 21. D.ezember 1.2.9.5 empfing Egilolf von A.spermont auf seiner Burg den C.hurer

Bischof und die Freiherren von V.az, die hier auf neutralem Boden einen Vertrag schlossen.

Auf unbekannte Weise gelangte das Schloss Brandis an die Herren von W.indegg aus dem

W.alenseegebiet, als deren Besitz es von 1.3.4.2 – 1.3.5.5 nachgewiesen ist. 1.3.5.5 ver-

kaufte es Johann von Bodmann, der Schwiegersohn des Hartmann von W.indegg, an Graf

Friedrich von T.oggenburg, welcher die Burg erweiterte und stark befestigte.

1.3.5.9 bezahlten die T.oggenburger für die burge zu Mayenfeld und den Hof Röschach

noch einmal, diesmal an die Grafen von W.erdenberg - S.argans. Der Grund für diese

doppelte Bezahlung ist nicht bekannt, könnte aber mit noch bestehenden Rechten der

W.erdenberger zusammenhängen.

Die Grafen von T.oggenburg hielten sich gelegentlich in der Burg auf und stellten hier

mehrere Urkunden aus. Der letzte Graf von T.oggenburg, Friedrich VII., baute gegenüber

dem Turm das «N.eue Schloss» als neuen Wohntrakt. Nach seinem Tod 1.4.3.6 wohnte

seine F.rau noch einige Monate auf der Burg.

Am 14. N.ovember 1.4.3.7 kamen Herrschaft und Schloss Maienfeld durch Heirat der

Nichte des letzten T.oggenburgers, Verena von W.erdenberg - S.argans mit Wolfram von

Brandis an die Familien von Brandis und von A.arburg. T.hüring von A.arburg war mit

Margarita von W.erdenberg - H.eiligenberg verheiratet, der S.chwester von Wolfram von

Brandis’ Gattin und hatte dadurch Anrecht auf das Erbe der T.oggenburger.

1.4.4.6 verkauften Thüring von A.arburg und seine Tochter Verena ihren halbtail an W.olf-

hard von Brandis.

1.4.7.7 schlossen die Herren von Brandis mit dem Zehngerichtebund ein Bündnis. Am

9. O.ktober desselben Jahr starb Wolfhard von Brandis im Schloss Maienfeld. Als

Kastellane auf der Burg amteten Leute aus der Stadtbürgerschaft. Aus der Herrschafts-

zeit der Brandis sind mehrere Freiheitsbriefe für Maienfeld erhalten.

1.4.9.9 wurde die Herrschaft Maienfeld in den S.chwabenkrieg verwickelt. Am 7. F.ebruar

öffneten die Brandis die S.tadt den kaiserlichen Truppen, doch bereits am 13. F.ebruar

erschienen die Bündner, plünderten die S.tadt, nahmen die Burg ein und führten Sigmund

und Thüring von Brandis als Gefangene nach C.hur. Dort übergaben sie die beiden sinniger-

weise ihrem eigenen Bruder, dem Dompropst Johannes von Brandis.

Nach dem Krieg wollten die Brandis Maienfeld aus finanziellen Gründen verkaufen. Ein

Verkauf an den interessierten Kaiser Maximilian kam nach jahrelangen Verhandlungen

nicht zustande, dafür erhielten 1.5.0.9 die Drei Bünde den Zuschlag, die in der Burg eine

Landvogtei einrichteten.

Der erste Vogt war Carli von H.ohenbalken, der letzte Jakob Ulrich Sprecher von B.ernegg.

Vögte stellte auch die Familie von S.alis.

In den Bündner Wirren waren 1.6.2.2 die Truppen des ö.sterreichischen Generals Alois

Baldiron einquartiert, sonst blieb das Schloss jedoch vom Kriegsgeschehen und vom

grossen S.tadtbrand verschont.

Am 1. A.pril 1.6.2.4 wurde es jedoch von den abziehenden ö.sterreichischen Truppen an-

gezündet. Nach der notdürftigen Instandstellung wurde es bis um 1.7.0.0 von ver-

schiedenen Vögten bewohnt.

Beim S.tadtbrand von 1.7.2.0 nahm auch das Schloss Schaden und war nur noch not-

dürftig bewohnbar. Im M.ärz 1.7.9.9 quartierten sich französische Truppen ein, die den

Grossteil des Holzwerks verheizten.

1.8.0.7 erwarb die Gemeinde Maienfeld die zerfallene und unbewohnbare Anlage, ver-

kaufte sie jedoch 1.8.3.7 wieder an Private. 1.9.6.8 wurde die gesamte Anlage für Fr.

460'000.- an die Baumeisterfamilie Zindel weiterverkauft und ausgebaut.

Das Schloss wurde restauriert und 1.9.7.2 - 1.9.7.3 archäologisch untersucht. Seit 1.8.6.8

ist ein Restaurant darin untergebracht

Le Capitole est un monument de la ville française de Toulouse, qui abrite aujourd’hui l'Hôtel de ville et le théâtre du Capitole. Sa construction a été décidée par les Capitouls en 1190, afin d’y établir le siège du pouvoir municipal. Il est l’emblème de la ville et c’est l’emplacement du pouvoir municipal depuis plus de huit siècles. Le Capitole est entouré par la place du Capitole à l'ouest, la rue de la Pomme et la rue du Poids de l'Huile au Sud, le square Charles-de-Gaulle et la pseudo-rue Ernest Roschach à l'Est et la rue Lafayette au Nord. Appelé autrefois la Maison Commune, il se composait d’un ensemble plus important de bâtiments achetés, construits et modifiés au fil des siècles selon les besoins. Aujourd’hui, seules subsistent la tour des archives ou Donjon datant du XVIe siècle, les galeries de la cour Henri-IV du XVIIe siècle, la façade de l’hôtel de ville du XVIIIe siècle et la porte du Petit Consistoire, faite par Nicolas Bachelier en 1546 aujourd'hui au jardin des plantes de Toulouse.

The Capitouls (governing magistrates) of the Toulouse embarked on the construction of the original building in 1190, to provide a seat for the government of a province growing in wealth and influence. The name "Capitole" referred not only to the Roman Capitol but also to the capitulum which was the chapter of the governing magistrates.

In the 20th century, the structures surrounding the vast (2 hectares) Place du Capitole were redesigned. Some of the interior of the Capitole can be traced back to the 16th century, but the current façade, 135 metres long and built of the characteristic pink brick in Neoclassical style, dates from 1750, built according to plans by Guillaume Cammas. The eight columns represent the original eight capitouls. In 1873, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc built a bell tower typical of the style of northern France on top of the donjon of the building. It was in this donjon that Jean Calas, a Protestant victim of a religiously biased trial, was interrogated. Only the Henri IV courtyard and gate survive from the original medieval buildings. It was in this courtyard that the Duke de Montmorency was decapitated after his rebellion against Cardinal Richelieu.

A thorough redesign of the Place du Capitole in 1995 reserved the space for pedestrians. Today the Capitole houses the city hall, as well as the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse opera company and a symphony orchestra. The Salle des Illustres contains 19th century works of art.
