My wife and I don't have a garden where we currently live, but we do grow a few vegetables in pots on our deck. And vegetables, of course, are an essential part of a healthy diet.

This is my second submission for this weeks Macro Mondays theme of Vegetable(s).

The radish (Raphanus sativus) is an edible root vegetable of the Brassicaceae family that was domesticated in Europe in pre-Roman times. Radishes are grown and consumed throughout the world, being mostly eaten raw as a crunchy salad vegetable

The orange carrot was created by the Dutch growers. There is pictorial evidence that the orange carrot existed at least in 512, but it is probable that it was not a stable variety until the Dutch bred the cultivar termed the "Long Orange" at the end of 17th century - beginning of the 18th century. Some claim that the Dutch created the orange carrots to honor the Dutch flag at the time and William of Orange, but other authorities argue these claims lack convincing evidence and it is possible that the orange carrot was favored by the Europeans because it does not brown the soups and stews as the purple carrot does and, as such, was more visually attractive

... Monday is nearly here, again :'-(

Macro Mondays ~ Slices of Food

I started out with crackers, cheese, then strawberries, nothing was working well. The radishes were my last resort and there was something about the textures, color and earthiness that drew me in.

Happy MM to All :)

The Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), also called sunroot, sunchoke, wild sunflower, topinambur, or earth apple, is a species of sunflower native to central North America. It is cultivated widely across the temperate zone for its tuber, which is used as a root vegetable.

Once considered a distinct species within the onion family, the shallot is now recognized as merely a botanical variety, or cultivar, of the common onion (Allium ceba). Chefs, however, still very much consider that it provides a unique flavor for culinary purposes.

Macro Mondays - Vegetable(s) - so many silly Baldrick jokes come to mind, but I shall refrain. HMM everyone! PS for those who aren't familiar with Baldrick, he's a fictional character the English TV series "Blackadder". It's an acquired taste, but packed some very quotable lines.

First time I have ever grown them. Pleased with how nice they look but a very small crop. I wouldnt want to be depending on them as a staple.

Destined for Christmas dinner tomorrow. ....You cant say they don't look suitably seasonal!

looking forward to trying them.

One of my favorite vegetables only problem is that most of the family is not as big a fan as me.

I have to do something with this one soon.

I sometimes throw a few slices of radishes into a salad, or also add bits of jalapeno and radish slices in an Asian style bowl of noodles. It adds a little zest to the flavor. Luckily, organic produce is not as ridiculously expensive compared to non-organic as it used to be, now that there are more growers who switched to organic growing methods. Those of us living in California are surrounded by fresh produce. No complaints here.

Stu grew these from seed and they turned out so good. Best parsnips I've ever had actually. We can pick these all winter. I made Mashed Potatoes and Parsnips and it was so yummy!

On the Bonavista peninsula you can still see houses with root cellars, which originated before refrigeration as a way to keep root vegetables (carrots, turnips, beets, parsnips, potatoes) fresh through the winter months. Nowadays there is a revival of interest in this ancient practice. Next to a colourful shed and abandoned dory and old root cellar is built into the rocky treeless bluff above the harbour at Trinity, Newfoundland. Old salt box houses can be seen on the top of the bluff.

Beautiful Brassica rapa, blooming in...

▶ Can a fellow Flickr-er help to identify this plant?

☞ It could be the blossoms of a wild turnip but, then again, it could be the flowers of cruciferous vegetables napa cabbage, bok choy, or rapini, or non-vegetable, rapeseed: they're all species of brassica rapa. But considering it's cultivated in an immigrant and refugee-farmed community garden, I assume it's one of the edible former!
