I went out to the freezer in the back room to get the ice cream and I saw it: A&W Root Beer.

It was Simple.

It was my Density..err. Destiny!

..and I almost hurt myself in the process, but it was goooood.

Today required multiple treats. Reading poetry. A run / hike with Silas. Then a stop at A&W.

I think YES! Had to give em a try after my daughter insisted on having a rootbeer float recently. Did some research, modified a recipe a bit (note: never allow a 13 year old to hold the bottle of rootbeer concentrate over the bowl of batter....but it ended up working despite the spill), and added a vanilla whipped cream 'frosting' with crushed (disintegrated) rootbeer barrel candies sprinkled on top. Nailed it! No, really, she crushed em with a hammer...

I've eaten a lot of Blue Bell Ice Cream in my life, but I've never seen this technique for making a root beer float.

Pookie used to do a series on our now neglected blog IPB Living called "Picky Eating With Pookie". In it, she would confront some of her food demons when forced by farm or garden bounty to try things she was pretty confident she didn't like. Through her Picky Eating series, Pookie learned to like green beans and the occasional bite of beet. And so, in that same spirit of culinary adventurousness, I tackled one of my greatest dislikes yesterday: the root beer float.

I have never entirely understood the appeal of root beer floats for two reasons. One, the foam is eerily reminiscent of the gross stuff you find in streams, that I've always assumed is either vile chemical runoff from an evil factory, or deer piss. (Or a combination of both.) The other is that a root beer float looks chocolatey, but isn't. My protests aside, Pookie and Boomer both love them, and after a long day of yardfun in the hot sun, I was outvoted in the choice to have root beer floats for dessert.

So. My verdict? The foam is still gross. And it wigs me out that it's brown but not chocolate. But I do like root beer, and I do like vanilla ice cream. And the creamy marriage of the two is definitely a good thing. But while this was, to my dismay, a very tasty dessert, it wasn't something I'd go out of my way for. That said, if it's the only dessert available, I'm not going to say no. Heh.
