I flipped the table in this one so that the orange section showed. I kind of like the way it looks with the long side on top, too. It's fun to have the option to place it either way.

This is such a good idea - too bad this particular execution of it is so clunky. See Egle Amaldi's living room in this set for a better example. From The Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement, Greystone Press, 1970. The peg and hole method is so practical, making this really adjustable - but can anyone figure out how the uprights would be anchored at floor and ceiling?

This divider is an improvement over the first one I did with the wood beads. I used different metal "poles" and a different glue. It looks so simple once it's finished, but it's a surprisingly time-consuming and somewhat tricky process from start to finish. This one required custom colored beads, so painting several coats of paint and then varnishing them took a long time. I initially put them on a piece of floral wire, but they were too squirrely (yes, that is a word), so I finally had to put each bead on the end of a shish-kebab stick. Had I planned better, I wouldn't have had to paint so many, but now I'll have some extra colors. It's always a learning experience with me. ;)

Absolute mint condition. What a month!!!! Massive thanks to all those obsessed stalkers and fans (you all know who you are)...one for the record books! I'm outta here for a few days to dial it up in Michigan...turtle races, boat parade, jet skiing, tubing and fireworks. Yessir. Have a great Fourth of July. Isn't most everyone celebrating this weekend?

Bedroom is now semi-divided... I just need a door of some kind. It took a long time to get this project completed. First I had to have a construction company come in and build the frames for them... I decided on the big square beams so they would match the exposed beams in the ceiling. Then the shutter man came in to measure for the divider. All the shutters had to be custom made because of the tracking system they were put on... which took about 3 months. It was a long and drawn-out project, but I'm happy with the final result so it was worth the wait.

***Side note***On a funny note, I am decorating our boat for the boat parade in str8 MCM style. Salterini chairs, sunburst clock, big ol' Witco cat, tiki, teak, classic Eames, with a little Danish modern thrown in...nothing heavy...actually have to carry it all onto a 24 foot Four Winns Fun Deck!

The Mid-Century Modern interior of the hotel where we had lunch in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, stands out among the many amazing sights in that country.

I was especially smitten by the room dividers and the artwork incorporated into them.

The hotel dates to 1964.

This is the only example of secular mid-century design I came across on my visit to Ethiopia.

***UPDATE*** Nathan grabbed these for his space in Charleston. Nice color. Nice pair. Thanks!

I received a compelling plea from two Chicago downsizers (along with their interior designer) who wanted to redo this beauty to match their stunning condo overlooking Milennium Park. They had looked all over the country with no luck, and they had to have THIS chair, which is beyond impossible to find. Their story, passion, and the fact the chair was going to stay in Chicago were the tipping points to finally letting this one go. I will upload pics once they get this show stopper reupholstered.

Here at id-iom we’re hardly prudes but we sometimes think that modern life lacks a bit of mystery and elegance. And what says mystery and elegance better than a modesty screen? So when we were asked if we could give a slightly tired looking modesty screen a Christmas makeover, Hugo got so excited he went and put his Christmas jumper on straight away. The game was afoot...

We eventually settled on ‘I’m only here for the ho’s’ featuring some bold ‘HO’s and Christmas colours. 1990 film Pretty Woman was my inspiration. I just wonder what we’re going to be asked to paint next.

Cheers

Back to a few more Texas photos today. All six of the photos posted this morning were taken towards the end of Day 10 of our 13-day birding trip to South Texas in March 2019. The Birding and Nature Centre on South Padre Island was our last stop of the day, made because we found we had time to call in. We spent about two hours there on this first visit, seeing 29 species of bird. As usual, I did not see every one of these on the list. The following morning, we returned for our planned visit. This is such an amazing place to visit!

This day started off with leaving the hotel that we had driven to on Day 9, the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, Brownsville, and driving to the first stopping place for Day 10. We stayed at this hotel for three nights, before having to drive all the way back to Houston on 30 March, ready to fly back home to Calgary.

Our early morning drive on Day 10 started off with driving in the wrong direction for quite a distance. One fun thing that happened as a result of this mistake, was that we spotted two beautiful Agave plants growing on either side of someone's front gate. We stopped in awe at the gorgeous orange flowers that grew from the tip of each leaf spike. I had never seen anything like these before and, once I got back to Calgary, I searched and searched on Google Images for photos that would give me an ID for these plants. Nothing - absolutely nothing - so I thought they must be something really unusual. Indeed, they were, lol! Some time after our return home, Anne B sent an email saying, guess what, these flowers were fake! She had looked at a close-up and could see the fabric lines and some frayed edges. A fun memory.

Once we were heading in the right direction, we drove east from Brownsville to Boca Chica, which is on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The first bird we saw was a Meadowlark, perched on top of a Yucca plant along the Boca Chica Highway. Closer to Boca Chica Beach, there were police vehicles, and at one place we were stopped by two men. One told us we could not go any further, but the second man told us we could go on. Managed to get a couple of very quick photos of Laughing Gulls on the beach, and then we were told to leave. Apparently, there was going to be some test at the nearby SpaceX Space Launch Facility there. We were able to grab a couple of quick shots of the SpaceX prototype from the road, then quickly continued on our drive away from the area. Quite exciting.

"The SpaceX South Texas Launch Site is a spaceport and test at Boca Chica Village near Brownsville, Texas, for the private use of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX).

Its stated purpose is "to provide SpaceX an exclusive launch site that would allow the company to accommodate its launch manifest and meet tight launch windows." The launch site was originally intended to support launches of the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles as well as "a variety of reusable suborbital launch vehicles",[4] but in 2018, SpaceX announced a change of plans, stating that the site would be used exclusively for SpaceX Starship. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk indicated in 2014 that he expected "commercial astronauts, private astronauts, to be departing from South Texas," and he foresaw launching spacecraft to Mars from there."

From Boca Chica, our next stopping place was the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. On the way there, we briefly stopped to take a few photos of a beautiful Harris's Hawk perched on a high wire. In order to get to the Sanctuary, we had to drive through an opening in "The Wall". I had really been hoping that, at some point, we would actually see a length of The Wall, having heard about it endlessly on TV.

"The Sabal Palm Sanctuary is a 557-acre (225-hectare) nature reserve and bird sanctuary located in the delta of the Rio Grande Valley in Cameron County near Brownsville, Texas. It is noted for being one of the last locations in the Rio Grande Valley with a profuse grove of sabal palms, an edible-heart-bearing palm much prized by pre-Hispanic inhabitants and noted by early explorers. As a relatively habitat-rich remnant of this Valley, it is a prized birdwatching and butterfly watching location for persons interested in the ecology of the Valley and adjacent states of northern Mexico.

The Sabal Palm Sanctuary closely approaches the southernmost point in the state of Texas, and is the southernmost point accessible to the public.

The Sanctuary occupies a parcel of the former Rabb Plantation, a 19th-century sugarcane plantation on the bank of the Rio Grande - at that time, a river deep enough to float light steamboats. The plantation's produce was shipped directly from the riverbank; the successful plantation's Queen Anne mansion, built by Frank and Lillian Rabb in 1891-1892, was adaptively remodeled in 2013 to serve as the Sanctuary's visitor center." From Wikipedia. The Mansion is a really fine building.

***UPDATE*** Alyssa was determined not to let this one elude her grasp (psst, I love determination). This beauty is going to Lincoln Square! Thank you guys 6/17/12. Breathtaking. It's soooo going down in Chi-town. Again, I humbly submit this simple, thoughtful question...who deserves something epic? kinzco@domain900.net..24 hours a day, every day.

I decided to use Anna Maria Horners beautiful fabrics for a curtain to the entrance of our study room. I just love this Drawing Room range to bits. Now we don't have to see the mess in there either!

Pre-construction. Blue tape on floor to the right and on the 1/2 wall to the left is about where the new wall/beam/post/whatever things will be. The sunlight up there is amazing (although this shot doesn't show that) so I don't want to break up the light-flow with solid walls, but I would, however, like to have a room with walls...hmmm, what to do? They may start construction on the beam part of the project before I'm sure I know what to do with the rest.

Loaded with versatility...Top and bottom are separate pieces for super convenient transport. This gem will fit anywhere. Two of these beauties in one year! Epic!

I was trying to get Natasha to walk toward me for a scavenger hunt shot, stepping forward. This isn't quite what I had in mind, but I may use it anyway as I have no other ideas and she's not known for her cooperative posing! At any rate, it's a nice stretch!
