Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden is a 123-hectare (300-acre) botanical garden in St Ives, in the northern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The Garden was established in 1966 by John Wrigley on behalf of Ku-ring-gai Council. Wrigley went on to establish the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra in 1970. It was opened by the then Governor of New South Wales, Sir Roden Cutler VC, in 1968. All of the plants in the Garden are Australian natives. Swamp wallabies are found within the Garden. The dominant species of birds found in the Garden are honeyeaters. Lamberts Clearing (named after the botanist Aylmer Bourke Lambert) is an open green space, and has a covered picnic area. There is a Fern House, which houses cycads, mossy ponds and ferns, and a Knoll Garden, which is a bush garden. Mueller Track (named after the first director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, Ferdinand von Mueller) is a path into the valley below the carpark. Ku-ring-gai Creek and Tree Fern Gully Creek intersect at Whipbird Gully. There is a nursery within the Garden for the purchase of plants. This building dates from construction from 1829 to 1839, built for the Mansel Talbot family, who gave their name to the nearby industrial town. Listed Grade 1, it passed out of the Talbot family hands in 1942, but was in a ruinous state when acquired by the County Council in 1974.

Worse was to come in 1977 when fire gutted much of the inside, but continuing restoration work has brought some parts back into use, with the Drawing Room, Library and Dining Room available for events, whilst the Staircase and Entrance Hallways are open to the public.

The house is set in parkland that extends to over 850 acres, the area including woodland, moorland, a lake, formal gardens and a superb orangery and six Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Two are Iron Age hill forts, two are medieval religious sites, one is a museum and one is a World War II installation. There is also a railway linking the main car park to the house.

Saturday Self Challenge

The subject for this week will be Stairs.

There are many types of stairs you can use for your challenge, get creative with how you photograph them! I look forward to see what you come up with!

The weather this week has yet again put a halt to any trips out, we’ve had floods, gales, snow, sleet and the very occasional glimpse of blue sky. So after some thought I decided on a local shot. This photo was taken inside Central Hall in the village, it’s home to a few local businesses, including an antique shop, therapy room, fitness club and chiropodist, there’s also a large room available for meetings etc.

There is quite a nice winding staircase over three floors, but when I looked closely it was in parts being used for storage, an old musical instrument, a pair of decorators step ladders and bits of assorted wood were dumped on the landings between the flights of stairs. So I decided on this shot of the steps leading to what I think is the antique shop, the door was locked. The colour version didn’t look too great (I think someone ought to give the wood a polish and the carpet clean !!) so I converted the image to B&W.

After visiting Húsavík and Goðafoss in the north of Iceland, we really wanted to drive south to the amazing Aldeyrafoss, but since it was one of the few days with rain, we decided to skip it and instead try to reach the famous seastack Hvítserkur in the blue hour. We knew that the drive would take more than 3 hours, but if Google Maps is right, we should be able to see Hvítserkur in the last faint light of the day. After 2 and a half hours of driving, we turned right onto a gravel road that got more and more bumpy along the way. Moreover, it started to rain and got increasingly dark, but since the visibility was still pretty good we kept speeding over all those bumps with the allowed 80 km/h, passing only a few lonely houses and farms along the way.

We eventually reached the parking lot, and as we got out of our camper van, we noticed that not much of the car’s white color was visible as it was splattered all over with dirt. Since it was already late and the weather was pretty bad, there was only one other car in the parking lot which was leaving when we arrived. So we hurried to get to the viewpoint on the cliff, and for a moment we really thought about going down to the beach, but due to the sketchy “trail” down and the extremely strong winds we decided to stay up there. We then set up our tripods and I really wasn’t sure if I can take my hands off the tripod without it flying away. My girlfriend and I then held each others tripod while the other mounted the camera on it. We kept the tripod as low to the ground as possible and tried some long exposures, but soon found that the wind was so strong that even shorter exposures of only a few seconds resulted in blurry images. To make things worse, the intensity of the rain increased, but we stayed out there and waited for the brief moments of calm where I could capture the only sharp image of the evening. To make the foreground a little more interesting, I then blended in the water from a blurry exposure of 13 seconds, which was nowhere near enough to smooth out the water.

Battered by the Icelandic winds and slightly soaked by the rain, we returned to the camper van and both hoped that we got a least one sharp image on our SD cards. Finally back in the car and protected from the elements, I looked up the way to the nearest campsite and my girlfriend then told me that she remembers an accommodation right next to the Hvítserkur parking lot. Since we had to drive by there anyway, we stopped and had a look, but the lights in the house were already out and not a single person was to be seen. I then checked booking.com and found this accommodation, but there seemed to be no room available. However, there was a phone number listed and so I asked my girlfriend if I should try calling them. She was a little hesitant since it was already 10:30 pm, but I figured they don’t need to answer the phone or probably already have their phones turned off if they don’t want to be bothered by late requests. So I gave it a try and a super-friendly Icelander picked up the phone and said: “Sure, there is still a room available! Where are you?” We were actually standing right in front of the house and 2 minutes later he came out of the house across the street, greeted us and showed us the rooms. We were so happy that we had found a nearby place to stay and especially enjoyed the luxury of a spacious room (compared to our camper van), took a hot shower and fell asleep very quickly in the comfortable bed.

The next morning, we both somehow hoped for an epic sunrise, but the sky was covered with clouds, the winds were still brutal and rain was pouring down. So it was with a heavy heart that we left this beautiful and remote place to head to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and despite the far from ideal conditions, I am very happy about this picture because it captures the memories of another great adventure in the land of fire and ice. Since its appearance on the cover page of National Geographic's “DESTINATIONS OF A LIFETIME”, the Aescher Moutain Guesthouse has become very popular with tourists from all over the world. Luckily, the Aescher seems to be mostly unaffected by this. While it certainly has become harder to find a room, the food has stayed authentic and the innkeepers still immediately make you feel at home.

Visitors have been brought here since the mid of the 19th century and the Aescher Guesthouse is one of the oldest in the Alpstein Mountains. However, for a long time, you almost exclusively found locals and hikers here. As my family has its roots in the area, I know the place since my childhood, when I passed it numberless times with my parents while hiking. Like any place you see very often, even beautiful Aescher eventually lost its special touch for me and for years I passed it with hardly a glance.

With the latest media hype and all the images of the Aescher appearing on social media platforms, I kind of rediscovered the place and, as an astro photographer, I started wondering, if there were any Milky Way Nightscapes taken at the Aescher. To my surprise, I found none.

Of course, Aescher is not the prime site that springs to your mind, when you think about where to capture the Milky Way. At the latitude of Switzerland, where the core of Milky Way stays rather low on the horizon, you normally aim for an open horizon – not what you find at the Aescher! With the sheer cliff, blocking half of the sky and the high mountain range to the south and west, I almost dismissed the place for a night shooting.

However, with some further planning, I found a window of opportunity, when Milky Way would line up nicely with the cliff in the first hours after astronomical dusk, while the core was still above the mountaintops. It was immediately clear to me, that I had to go there!

As there was no room available on short notice anymore at the Aescher, I stayed at the pleasant Ebenalp Guesthouse, located on top of the cliff, from where you can reach Aescher with a 15-minute hike on a well-maintained mountain trail.

Due to the blazing lights from the Aescher I lost about half of my 3 hours shooting time between astronomical dusk and moonrise, but when the last guests finally went to rest, the innkeeper extinguished most lights and even moved some equipment to allow me a clear shot of the house. Thanks a lot!

In the afternoon of 18 September 2020 I was looking for a hotel in the imperial city center of Vichy. The hotel I was looking for turned out to be hosting the annual event of the Lancia Club of France. Luckily there was still a room available for me.

Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden is a 123-hectare (300-acre) botanical garden in St Ives, in the northern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The Garden was established in 1966 by John Wrigley on behalf of Ku-ring-gai Council. Wrigley went on to establish the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra in 1970. It was opened by the then Governor of New South Wales, Sir Roden Cutler VC, in 1968. All of the plants in the Garden are Australian natives. Swamp wallabies are found within the Garden. The dominant species of birds found in the Garden are honeyeaters. Lamberts Clearing (named after the botanist Aylmer Bourke Lambert) is an open green space, and has a covered picnic area. There is a Fern House, which houses cycads, mossy ponds and ferns, and a Knoll Garden, which is a bush garden. Mueller Track (named after the first director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, Ferdinand von Mueller) is a path into the valley below the carpark. Ku-ring-gai Creek and Tree Fern Gully Creek intersect at Whipbird Gully. There is a nursery within the Garden for the purchase of plants. Caley's Pavilion (named after the botanist George Caley) is a function room, available for wedding hire. 39903
