Not every place to sleep has a lawn and sunbathing area. After a day's stage on a gravel road, it was time to look around for a place to sleep in the evening: Where could you disappear so as not to be disturbed at night and where would there be a reasonably level area, were always the most urgent questions.

Sleeping in the Khutse National Reserve in Botswana is a really amazing experience. You get to listen to the sounds of all animals while being in a complete darkness... simply beautiful

The parking is often the most interesting place of a car event. In this case there was also a camping, which made it even more fun to find all the old camping equipment.
This HY is a bit faster than usual, since it is fitted with a Volvo engine. The roof rack with tent seems ideal for the kids.

The year of the super hot summer and out-of-control bushfires. It was 38 degrees Centigrade in the roof tent at 10pm but impossible to sleep outside unless you enjoy being punctured by mosquitoes (the downside of camping near a river).
Note the massive clump of (Australian) mistletoe depending from the tree branch above the tent.

Il est temps de vous présenter quelques souvenirs de ce voyage en Namibie, à commencer par notre accommodation pour la nuit, la tente sur toit :) Très confortable, elle permet la contemplation sans limite des paysages qui nous entourent, qu'ils soient magnifiés par la voûte céleste ou illuminés par la lune qui nous a accompagné durant tout ce voyage.

Altro notturno. Più minimalista stavolta, solo con la luce della luna e del fuoco.
Un po' un azzardo, considerando di non poter ricaricare l'unica batteria se non in viaggio (e in viaggio, c'è sempre taaanto da fotografare!) ...
Ma non me lo sarei perdonata se non ci avessi provato in un posto così, in mezzo al niente.
Area attrezzata, in culo al mondo, gestita da nessuno (ma pulitissima), a ridosso di un cupolone granitico che svetta in un'immensa piana desertica. Freddo, silenzio, fuoco... e l'ululato gli sciacalli.
Forse la notte più suggestiva.

Deze aanhangbus hebben we in 900 manuren in elkaar geflanst. We hebben een sloopbus in stukken gehakt en verbouwd tot een mobiele slaapkamer. Hier staat de hele combinatie klaar voor verscheping naar de USA voor, wat leter een droomvakantie bleek te worden. 3 maanden zwerven door Canada & Alaska. We built this trailer in 900 man hours. We chopped a rusty bus into pieces and remodeled it to this matching trailer. Here the combination is all prepared for the big trip to the other side of the ocean.This picture was taken shortly before we sent it over the ocean from Holland to the USA in 2005.

Shark Island is a small peninsula adjacent to the coastal city of Lüderitz in Namibia. Formerly an island, it became a peninsula from 1906 on by the creation of a land connection. Now a campsite for tourists, from 1904 to 1907 it was the site of the Shark Island Concentration Camp. It was used by the German Empire during the Herero and Namaqua genocide of 1904 to 1908. The Herero and Namaqua genocide was a campaign of racial extermination and collective punishment that the German Empire undertook in German South-West Africa (modern-day Namibia) against the Herero and Nama people. It is considered as one of the first genocides of the 20th century. It took place between 1904 and 1907 during the Herero Wars. In January 1904, the Herero people, led by Samuel Maharero and Nama captain Hendrik Witbooi, rebelled against German colonial rule. In August, German general Lothar von Trotha defeated the Herero in the Battle of Waterberg and drove them into the desert of Omaheke, where most of them died of dehydration. In October, the Nama people also rebelled against the Germans, only to suffer a similar fate.
In total, between 24,000 and 100,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama died. The first phase of the genocide was characterized by widespread death from starvation and dehydration due to the prevention of the retreating Herero from leaving the desert by German forces. Once defeated, thousands of Herero and Nama were imprisoned in concentration camps, where the majority died of disease, abuse, and exhaustion. Between 1,032 and 3000 Herero and Namaqua men, women, and children died in the Shark Island Concentration Camp between its opening in 1905 and its closing in April 1907. we are actually late already as lots of other people have departed or are departing now..
Roof tent camping, somewhere near the Namoi River in outback NSW, in 2011 (in a Subaru Outback, of course). My favourite sort of camping! My husband could put that roof tent up and down in ten minutes when pressed. Height and the ladder keeps us safe from any predators (not that we saw any: I'm thinking snakes, axe murderers).

'Wild Camping' in Calgary Bay. An unplanned stop, we only decided to visit after landing on Mull. (Original plan was to head to Fidden Farm) A well travelled friend recommended it a few days earlier at Notgrove.
We thought we might stay a night... we ended up there for 3! And never got to Fidden Farm.
Spent the day at Yosemite National Park with my mom and daughter today. It was so nice to be able to enjoy the park without it being a tourist zoo that it normally is on a weekend or a holiday.
