We had one of the best views of the grand opening of the Ice Ribbon in downtown Spokane. I feel so fortunate to have been here to photograph it!

Our view last week from the roof of the Red Lion Hotel. I still think Spokane is one of the most beautiful cities around :)

Tonight's rooftop adventure proved to be worth the terrifying trip up and down two ladders just to see this view. Taken from the lower part of the historic Washington Water Power building.

Last night I had the chance to get back out on a new rooftop at Washington State University, Spokane Campus for some evening pictures. The sky cooperated nicely for about two hours until we started getting rained on. I always love this time of evening from a rooftop.

Here's another lovely view of the Spokane River from the other night.

Tonight I was able to head out on another rooftop adventure with some great photographers. The Davenport Hotel is one of my very favorite buildings in the Spokane area. The amazing colors in the sky and all of the city lights coming on really added to this I think.

We had a little time up on top of the Fernwell building tonight in downtown Spokane. I always love seeing the different colored floors in the parkade.

Another favorite from our rooftop shoot last week. I absolutely love the falls and all of the different colors that appear at night.

Just a fun fish-eye view of the statue of Abraham Lincoln watching over the intersections in downtown Spokane. I found a great article about when the statue was unveiled and it's symbolism to Spokane.

The other day we noticed that something had gotten into our kitchen and eaten a bunch of flour and Aunt Jemima pancake mix. So I got my landlord's rodent trap (he uses it to catch squirrels) and bated it with the rest of the Aunt Jemima that we didn't want to eat after seeing that some creature had been into it. I ended up catching a big rat! We named him Jemimo because of his craving for Aunt Jemima pancake mix. We took him to a park last night on the other side of the highway from our house and released him. I hope he won't come back. If he does he either has to cross a large expressway or find one of the bridges to get across. Hopefully he will like his new environment.

Also known as ship rat, roof rat, house rat, is a common long-tailed rodent of the genus Rattus (rats) in the subfamily Murinae

Zoo Heidelberg (Germany), September 2009

It's not a joke: Meanwhile in Germany you find the Black Rat on the red list of the endangered species cause this famous carrier of many diseases (including the plague) is more and more supplanted by the Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus).

At his point I'd like to recommend two fabulous rat horror movies: "Willard" (NOT the remake, get the original from Daniel Mann, USA 1971) and it's sequel "Ben" (Phil Karlson, USA 1972). And before I forget, "Of Unknown Origin" (George P. Cosmatos, USA 1983) is also very good...:)

One of my very favorite times of year downtown Spokane. It was a cold evening, but well worth the time spent outside capturing the lights.

After I went to bed last night, my backyard owl house got a new visitor. I have not seen a rat in my yard in several years. I really need Frick & Frack to come back. Rats are a favorite food for screech owls.

One of Spokane's most beautiful cathedrals as the sun went down last week. I love how beautiful it is lit up at night.

I was just going back through some of my pictures from our last rooftop photo shoot (on top of the City Ramp Parking Garage) and found this one. I was originally trying to get the train movement, but then I spotted that brick building behind the train. I zoomed in and saw that is an old cracker warehouse built in 1891. There are so many places in Spokane that we just don't notice when we are going about our daily lives. These places have been here long before us and hopefully they will continue to be here for future generations. www.spokesman.com/stories/2010/nov/25/from-biscuits-to-bo...

Nothing makes me happier in the morning than coming outside and finding a large dead rat of breeding age in one of my many rat traps.

Since my neighbors and I, all have a number of fruit trees that produce fruit all the year around, rats and mice are a constant issue.

I believe the large male rat pictured above was one of the two that I had seen on numerous occasions hollowing out fruit on my Morro Blood Orange tree.

I had neutralized three other rats in this tree with the use of the BB gun since the fruit became ripe in December of 2009, but two of these organisms had eluded both my projectiles, and my traps much to my chagrin.

Too bad I striped off the rest of the oranges from the blood orange and the satsumas off the tangerine tree, now there is nothing to eat on that side of the yard and they will probably go after my cherimoya next.

Organism: Roof Rat (Rattus rattus) Link

Trap type: T-Rex manufactured by Bell Laboratories. These are great because they do not require bait when inserted in a "run" used by rodents and can be wire tied on a branch or pipe.

Location: Orange County California.
