The back of this house that faces the morning sun is protected from its rays by a black shadecloth and two wooden rollup blinds.
My impression of Penang was that it was filled with every sort of shade technology everywhere to escape heat from the sun. Although the sun is often behind clouds and not as scorching as the Australian sun, everyone seeks relief in any way possible, and shade is the most effective way to reduce exposure to heat.

The bright red rollup doors of the James Joyce Irish Pub and a pizza shop add a bit of dramatic color to this street in the historic center of Catania, Italy.
To make this macro image I had to search among the many sewing utensils that my wife has, among needles, clothes, scissors, thimbles, sewing machines and things of all kinds, I found what I was looking for, not only had this measuring tape, I had several, but this seemed perfect for what I wanted to do. I made a brief photo session with it, and I left it in its place, as if nothing had happened...😂

A rollup blind made of waterproof tarpaulin material. As usualy this is hung on the exterior of the verandah over the pedestrian walkway of heritage terrace shopfronts to provide shade for pedestrians and to keep the shop interior cool.
The shops across the street gives you a good idea of what this side is llke. This is typical of Penang heritage city streets. New developments are high rise shopping centres and residential condos.

The Black Guillemot or Tystie (Cepphus grylle) is a medium-sized alcid.
Adult birds have black bodies with a white wing patch, a thin dark bill, and red legs and feet. They show white wing linings in flight. In winter, the upperparts are pale grey and the underparts are white. The wings remain black with the large white patch on the inner wing.
Their breeding habitat is rocky shores, cliffs and islands on northern Atlantic coasts in eastern North America as far south as Maine, and in western Europe as far south as Ireland.They are one of the few birds to breed on Surtsey, Iceland a new volcanic island. In the UK it is a fairly common breeding bird in western and northern Scotland and Ireland. In the rest of Great Britain they only breed at St. Bees Head in Cumbria, the Isle of Man and on east Anglesey in north Wales. Some birds breed in Alaska where their range overlaps with the similar Pigeon Guillemot.
These birds often overwinter in their breeding areas, moving to open waters if necessary, but usually not migrating very far south.
They dive for food from the surface, swimming underwater. They mainly eat fish and crustaceans, also some mollusks, insects and plant material. (wikipedia)
This was an adult bird in breeding plumage swimming in the clear waters of Coliemore Harbour, Co. Dublin.
String rollup slat bllinds hanging on the edge of the walkway verandah of terrace shops in the city. They provide much needed shade for pedestrians and the shops in hot Penang.
This shop is obviously owned by Chinese people, as it has Chinese banner characters at the top of the entrance probably announcing the business name, the yin-yang i-ching symbol, and shiny red-and-gold chinese new year banners.

The white-winged tern, or white-winged black tern (Chlidonias leucopterus or Chlidonias leucoptera), is a species of tern in the family Laridae. It is a small species generally found in or near bodies of fresh water across much of the world, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Adult birds in summer have short red legs and a short black bill (small and stubby, measuring 22–25 mm from the feathers, decidedly shorter than the head), a black neck (often with a pale gray back) and belly, very dark grey back, with a white rump and light grey (almost white) tail, which often looks 'square' in juveniles. The face is tinged yellowish. The wings, as the name implies, are mainly white. The inner wing is grayish with brown-tipped coverts.
Their breeding habitat is freshwater marshes across from southeast Europe to Central Asia and the Russian Far East. In winter, they migrate to Africa, southern Asia and Australia. (wikipedia)
The White-winged Tern (WWT) is a rare marsh tern in Ireland, with only one record every year or so. This adult summer bird was found on a seawatch from Dalkey, Co. Dublin by Noel Keogh, and later that morning further north at Swords Estuary by Victor Caschera. WWT is a very rare bird for Dublin.

The Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) is a cosmopolitan species of heron (family Ardeidae) found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Bubulcus, although some authorities regard its two subspecies as full species, the Western Cattle Egret and the Eastern Cattle Egret. Despite the similarities in plumage to the egrets of the genus Egretta, it is more closely related to the herons of Ardea. Originally native to parts of Asia, Africa and Europe, it has undergone a rapid expansion in its distribution and successfully colonised much of the rest of the world.
It is a stocky white bird adorned with buff plumes in the breeding season which nests in colonies, usually near bodies of water and often with other wading birds. The nest is a platform of sticks in trees or shrubs. Unlike most other herons, it feeds in relatively dry grassy habitats, often accompanying cattle or other large mammals, since it catches insect and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. Some populations of the Cattle Egret are migratory and others show post-breeding dispersal.
The adult Cattle Egret has few predators, but birds or mammals may raid its nests, and chicks may be lost to starvation, calcium deficiency or disturbance from other large birds. A juvenile Cattle Egret feeding on insects disturbed by the grazing horse. There was a flock of egrets feeding in a field of horses quite close to where we were staying in France during the summer of 2025.

The Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a wading bird. This is the most widespread ibis species, breeding in scattered sites in warm regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Atlantic and Caribbean region of the Americas. This species is migratory; most European birds winter in Africa, and in North America birds from north of the Carolinas winter farther south. Birds from other populations may disperse widely outside the breeding season. While generally declining in Europe it has recently established a breeding colony in Southern Spain. (wikipedia)
A near annual vagrant to Ireland in small numbers. 2025 has been an exceptional year for this species in Ireland, with a flock of 66 seen in Cork. This bird was found on Bull Island, Dublin Bay, with a second bird found there a few days later by myself. Smart looking birds.

The Eurasian Magpie or common magpie (Pica pica) is a resident breeding bird throughout Europe, much of Asia and northwest Africa. It is one of several birds in the crow family designated magpies, and belongs to the Holarctic radiation of "monochrome" magpies. In Europe, "magpie" is used by English speakers as a synonym for the European magpie: the only other magpie in Europe is the Iberian magpie (Cyanopica cooki), which is limited to the Iberian peninsula.
The Eurasian magpie is one of the most intelligent birds, and it is believed to be one of the most intelligent of all animals. The expansion of its nidopallium is approximately the same in its relative size as the brain of chimpanzees, orangutans and humans.
The gradual clinal variation over the large geographic range and the intergradation of the different races means that the geographical limits and acceptance of the various subspecies varies between authorities. The International Ornithological Congress recognise ten subspecies.
The range of the magpie extends across temperate Eurasia from Spain and Ireland in the west to the Kamchatka Peninsula and Taiwan in the east. There are also populations in northwest Africa and on Mediterranean islands. The species has been introduced in Japan on the island of Kyushu.The Eurasian magpie has an extremely large range. The European population is estimated to be between 7.5 and 19 million breeding pairs. Allowing for the birds breeding in other continents, the total population is estimated to be between 46 and 228 million individuals. The population trend in Europe has been stable since 1980. There is no evidence of any serious overall decline in numbers, so the species is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as being of Least Concern. (wikipedia)

The common grasshopper warbler or just grasshopper warbler (Locustella naevia) is a species of Old World warbler in the genus Locustella. It breeds across much of temperate Europe and the western Palearctic. It is migratory, wintering across northern tropical Africa just south of the Sahara, and also locally in India.
This small passerine bird is found in dense grassland vegetation, often close to water, and usually with a few small scattered shrubs. The adult has a streaked brown back and whitish grey underparts which are unstreaked except on the undertail coverts. The sexes are identical, as with most warblers, but young birds are yellower below. Like most warblers, it is insectivorous.
This is a species which skulks in the undergrowth, creeping through bushes and low foliage, and which is very difficult to see except when singing from a prominent position. The song, which gives this species its name, is a mechanical grasshopper-like reeling, often given at dawn or dusk. (wikipedia)
This individual was photographed along the Wexford coast at Cahore. It appeared to be fresh in. A real sign of the beginning of Spring.

Native to east Asia, Mandarin Ducks were brought to Britain from China in the middle of the 18th Century. Some of them escaped, or were deliberately released, from wildfowl collections during the 1930s and began breeding in the wild. Nowadays, about 3,500 pairs nest in the UK, 14% of the world’s total and the largest population outside the Far East. Like the pheasant and the Canada goose, the mandarin has been accepted, begrudgingly, as a European species, having been long regarded as an illegal immigrant.
Vagrants from Britain visited Wexford in 1971. By 1978, Mandarin Ducks were breeding in the valley of the River Shimna in County Down. There have been reports of their presence elsewhere in recent years, mainly in the east of the country (The Irish Examiner, 21st May 2012).
This male has been a regular visitor to the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin/Griffith Park, Drumcondra on the Tolka River for the last 4-5 years. This photograph was taken at the ponds in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. Such a stunning duck.

The Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) is a cosmopolitan species of heron (family Ardeidae) found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Bubulcus, although some authorities regard its two subspecies as full species, the Western Cattle Egret and the Eastern Cattle Egret. Despite the similarities in plumage to the egrets of the genus Egretta, it is more closely related to the herons of Ardea. Originally native to parts of Asia, Africa and Europe, it has undergone a rapid expansion in its distribution and successfully colonised much of the rest of the world.
It is a stocky white bird adorned with buff plumes in the breeding season which nests in colonies, usually near bodies of water and often with other wading birds. The nest is a platform of sticks in trees or shrubs. Unlike most other herons, it feeds in relatively dry grassy habitats, often accompanying cattle or other large mammals, since it catches insect and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. Some populations of the Cattle Egret are migratory and others show post-breeding dispersal.
The adult Cattle Egret has few predators, but birds or mammals may raid its nests, and chicks may be lost to starvation, calcium deficiency or disturbance from other large birds. This species removes ticks and flies from cattle, but it can be a safety hazard at airfields, and has been implicated in the spread of tick-borne animal diseases. (wikipedia)
A juvenile Cattle Egret coming into land. There was a flock of egrets feeding in a field of horses quite close to where we were staying in France during the summer of 2025.
