Dernière étape ELITE

Paris - Mars 2016

From the mountains we headed into the area around David Gareji, a famous old monastery on the border with Azerbaijan. In the semi-desert habitat in this area we encountered a few neat birds; the best were these beautiful European Rollers, a family group.

In February, 1996 Angus Bike Chain sponsored a round robin tournament at Carnoustie Leisure Centre. A Carnoustie team won, with an Arbroath selection runners-up. In the picture were, from left, back, Arbroath - Joanne Parker, Sam Woodburn, Karen Connelly, Laura MacFarlane, Rachel Anderson, Lynsey Clinton and Holly Keillor: front, Carnoustie - Lauren Couttie, Elizabeth Couttie, Sarah Philip, Melissa Bremner, Fiona Dargie and Ailsa Roy. At the very back was Steve Smith, sponsor of the event.

26 April 2011 - In Kuma Garadayat, North Darfur, JSR Gambari begins the distribution of 3,000 specialized water rollers to formerly displaced villages throughout the region. It is hoped that these barrels will both ease the physical burden on women and children and reduce the number of trips made to far off water points, thereby increasing the community's sense of security. Was lucky to get more clear shots of the 31 cm Indian Roller with its distinctive colours. Found solitary or in pairs usually perched on overhead wires, bare branches, small bushtops or earthen mounds. Glides and drops on prey or pounces suddenly and batters prey against perch before swallowing.

Again from the Simcoe County Museum at Midhurst Ontario, this time not a Steam Shovel, but a Steam Roller. The term "Steam Roller" became the description for equipment of this type for many of us, even though they changed their motive power to diesel. You can see the steam wafting out from under this roller. Perhaps because even new ones generate steam when the water used to keep the rollers from sticking, turns to steam on contact with the hot tarmac, we may still think of them as Steam Rollers!

Unfortunately, I neglected to record the year and make of this unit. Probably mid to late 1920s.

Rollers off the south west coast of South Australia, west of Fowler's Bay.

I could have stayed there for hours just watching them roll in.

The New River Valley Roller Girls of Christiansburg against the French Broads of Asheville. A little dark for action shots, but a blast to watch!

One last ride on this, through the singles line. Over the course of the day I became more and more resolved to make good faces for the camera. I don't buy the photos, but maybe I will provide a tiny bit of amusement for my fellow riders if they do. Seems my fellow riders here have the same general idea.

I can feel the rollers tightening
