Das Gedenken an das Grauen des Ersten Weltkrieges hat zahlreiche Denkmale hervorgebracht. Zu den bemerkenswerteren gehört der sogenannte "Windsheimer Roland" im mittelfränkischen Bad Windsheim.

Das Kriegerdenkmal greift das mittelalterliche Motiv der Roland-Statuen auf, welche mit dem Richtschwert in der Hand bürgerliche Freiheit und das Stadt- und Marktrecht symbolisieren.

Schon 1919 wurde ein Wettbewern für ein Kriegerdenkmal für die Gefallenen des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges 1870/71 und des Ersten Weltkriegs in Bad Windsheim durchgeführt. Das 1927/28 erbaute Denkmal geht auf einen Entwurf des Bildhauers Philipp Widmer und des Architekten Fritz Mayer zurück. Als Material wurde Muschelkalk gewählt. Bemerkenswert ist die Größe des Denkmals. Die Skulptur des Roland ist 8 Meter hoch, das gesamte Denkmal ist insgesamt elf Meter hoch.

The Bremen Roland is a statue of Roland, erected in 1404. It stands in the market square (Rathausplatz) of Bremen, Germany, facing the cathedral, and shows Roland, paladin of the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and hero of the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.

Statues of Roland appear in numerous cities of the former Holy Roman Empire, as emblems of city liberties, Stadtrechte. The Roland statue at Bremen is the oldest surviving example. From Bremen the symbol of civic liberty and freedom spread to other cities and has become a symbol of the new Europe. Since 1973, it is protected by the monument protection act. In July 2004, along with the town hall, the statue was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in recognition of its outstanding architecture and symbolism of an important historical figure.

Die Figur hat eine Höhe von 5,47 Metern und steht auf einem 60 Zentimeter hohen, gestuften Podest. Im Rücken wird sie von einem Pfeiler gestützt, der von einem gotisch ornamentierten Baldachin gekrönt wird. So erreicht das Denkmal eine Gesamthöhe von 10,21 Metern und ist damit die größte freistehende Statue des deutschen Mittelalters.

Bremen's "Statue of Liberty" (built 1404) is Germany's largest Roland statue - these were erected in multiple German cities as symbols of trading rights and freedom. The knight was the idealised figure of the time, the gentleman of the Middle Ages, who was expected to behave nobly, in accordance with the code of chivalry. Roland is looking to the cathedral, the seat of the archbishop who had a claim to secular power over Bremen. The city council disputed this for centuries, ever since there have been bishops in Bremen. The free imperial city only accepted the rule of the emperor.

The standing figure is 5.47 m tall, and stands on a 60 cm rostrum. A supporting column, crowned by a baldachin, brings the combined height to 10.21 m. The statue was carved in limestone from the Elm, and was commissioned by the city fathers to replace a wooden one burnt in 1366 by Prince-Archbishop Albert II. It confronts the church as a representation of city rights opposed to the territorial claims of the prince-archbishop.
