The Bremer Roland is a statue on Bremen's market square, erected in 1404. The statue is a bit over 10 metres tall.
Roland statues - statues of a knight with a drawn sword - can be frequently found in cities in northern Germany, signifying the town privileges of a medieval city.

Like Roland statues in other cities, the Halle Roland was erected as a symbol of civil freedom, as a symbol of the city's independence and as a symbol of high jurisdiction. In its current form, the Roland at the Red Tower was created by the Halle sculptor Johann George Bürger, who in 1719 created a stone copy of the earlier wooden sculpture, which is probably identical in detail and, like its predecessor, is four meters high.
Der Hallesche Roland wurde wie Roland-Statuen in anderen Städten, als Zeichen der bürgerlichen Freiheit, als Sinnbild für die Eigenständigkeit der Stadt und als Symbol für die hohe Gerichtsbarkeit aufgestellt. In seiner heutigen Fassung stammt der Roland am Roten Turm vom halleschen Bildhauer Johann George Bürger, der im Jahr 1719 eine wohl auch im Detail identische Kopie aus Stein der früheren Skulptur aus Holz erstellte, die wie ihr Vorgänger vier Meter hoch ist.

The Bremen Roland is a statue of Roland, erected in 1404. It stands in the market square (Rathausplatz) of Bremen, Germany, facing the cathedral, and shows Roland, paladin of the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and hero of the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.
Statues of Roland appear in numerous cities of the former Holy Roman Empire, as emblems of city liberties, Stadtrechte. The Roland statue at Bremen is the oldest surviving example. From Bremen the symbol of civic liberty and freedom spread to other cities and has become a symbol of the new Europe. Since 1973, it is protected by the monument protection act. In July 2004, along with the town hall, the statue was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in recognition of its outstanding architecture and symbolism of an important historical figure.
Der Bremer Roland, eine 1404 errichtete Rolandstatue auf dem Marktplatz vor dem Rathaus, ist ein Wahrzeichen Bremens. Seit 1973 steht der Roland unter Denkmalschutz[1] und wurde 2004 gemeinsam mit dem Rathaus von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe der Menschheit erklärt.[2][3]
Die Figur hat eine Höhe von 5,47 Metern und steht auf einem 60 Zentimeter hohen, gestuften Podest. Im Rücken wird sie von einem Pfeiler gestützt, der von einem gotisch ornamentierten Baldachin gekrönt wird. So erreicht das Denkmal eine Gesamthöhe von 10,21 Metern und ist damit die größte freistehende Statue des deutschen Mittelalters.

A few years ago, another sculpture made by Roland Haeberlein was stolen. A day later, I got a call from a journalist writing an article about the theft. He needed a photo of the artist and asked if he could use a portrait I took of Roland at an event several years ago. I was reminded of that as I made my way around the park looking at his sculptures.
I always think the clay courts of Roland Garros look somewhat like Mars… With my dad being volunteer president of a local tennis club we saw quite a few finals on 📺 in my youth!

In der Granitz, ein durch die Eiszeit geformter Höhenrücken bei Binz auf Rügen, weist die Strecke der Rügenschen Bäderbahnen beachtliche Steigungen auf. "Roland" in Form der 99 783 muß sich also beim Rasen ziemlich anstrengen, so wie hier zwischen Seelitz West und Garftitz.
