The Halberstadt Roland
A Roland statue is a statue of a knight with a drawn sword, signifying the town privileges of a medieval city. Such statues exist in a number of cities notably in northern and eastern Germany, where they are often placed on the market square or in front of the city hall.
The Bremer Roland is a statue on Bremen's market square, erected in 1404. The statue is a bit over 10 metres tall.

Das Gedenken an das Grauen des Ersten Weltkrieges hat zahlreiche Denkmale hervorgebracht. Zu den bemerkenswerteren gehört der sogenannte "Windsheimer Roland" im mittelfränkischen Bad Windsheim.
Das Kriegerdenkmal greift das mittelalterliche Motiv der Roland-Statuen auf, welche mit dem Richtschwert in der Hand bürgerliche Freiheit und das Stadt- und Marktrecht symbolisieren.
Schon 1919 wurde ein Wettbewern für ein Kriegerdenkmal für die Gefallenen des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges 1870/71 und des Ersten Weltkriegs in Bad Windsheim durchgeführt. Das 1927/28 erbaute Denkmal geht auf einen Entwurf des Bildhauers Philipp Widmer und des Architekten Fritz Mayer zurück. Als Material wurde Muschelkalk gewählt. Bemerkenswert ist die Größe des Denkmals. Die Skulptur des Roland ist 8 Meter hoch, das gesamte Denkmal ist insgesamt elf Meter hoch.

Like Roland statues in other cities, the Halle Roland was erected as a symbol of civil freedom, as a symbol of the city's independence and as a symbol of high jurisdiction. In its current form, the Roland at the Red Tower was created by the Halle sculptor Johann George Bürger, who in 1719 created a stone copy of the earlier wooden sculpture, which is probably identical in detail and, like its predecessor, is four meters high.
Der Hallesche Roland wurde wie Roland-Statuen in anderen Städten, als Zeichen der bürgerlichen Freiheit, als Sinnbild für die Eigenständigkeit der Stadt und als Symbol für die hohe Gerichtsbarkeit aufgestellt. In seiner heutigen Fassung stammt der Roland am Roten Turm vom halleschen Bildhauer Johann George Bürger, der im Jahr 1719 eine wohl auch im Detail identische Kopie aus Stein der früheren Skulptur aus Holz erstellte, die wie ihr Vorgänger vier Meter hoch ist.

Die Rügensche Kleinbahn (RüKB), im Volksmund Rasender Roland genannt, ist eine Schmalspurbahn mit einer Spurweite von 750 mm auf der Insel Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Die dampfbetriebene Schmalspurbahn ist eine Hauptattraktion der Insel und verbindet Putbus über Binz, Sellin und Baabe mit Göhren. Auf einer Strecke von 24,1 Kilometern wird mit historischen Dampflokomotiven und Wagen, die teilweise fast 100 Jahre alt sind, ein regulärer Betrieb aufrechterhalten. Seit dem Jahr 2008 erbringt die Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn (PRESS) aus Jöhstadt mit ihrem neuen Geschäftsbereich Rügensche Bäderbahn (RüBB) die Verkehrsleistungen.
Der "Rasende Roland" ist eine dampflokbetriebene historische Schmalspurbahn auf der Insel Rügen. Seit 1895 fährt er mit gemütlichen 30 km/h Höchstgeschwindigkeit über die Insel Rügen und verbindet die bekannten Seebäder miteinander.

Rowing friends were staying at Eagles Nest Retreat near Sheffield, Tasmania. We visited for a bbq - what a view they had! I returned next morning for the sunrise.

Roland blickt zum Dom, dem Amtssitz des Erzbischofs mit seinem weltlichen Herrschaftsanspruch über Bremen, den der Rat durch die Jahrhunderte bestritten hat, solange es in Bremen Bischöfe gab: Die reichsfreie Stadt erkannte nur Kaiser und Reich über sich an.
Bremen's "Statue of Liberty" (built 1404) is Germany's largest Roland statue - these were erected in multiple German cities as symbols of trading rights and freedom. The knight was the idealised figure of the time, the gentleman of the Middle Ages, who was expected to behave nobly, in accordance with the code of chivalry. Roland is looking to the cathedral, the seat of the archbishop who had a claim to secular power over Bremen. The city council disputed this for centuries, ever since there have been bishops in Bremen. The free imperial city only accepted the rule of the emperor.
