Een mogelijke verklaring voor de naam vliegenzwam is dat het rode vlies op de hoed het gedeelte van de zwam is dat de stof muscarine bevat, waarvan een vliegendodend middel zou kunnen worden gemaakt. Sommigen hebben een verband gezien met hallucinaties van door de lucht vliegen bij inname, maar dit is etymologisch onjuist. Het Latijnse woord voor de vlieg is musca. Naast muscarine bevat de vliegenzwam nog een aantal andere toxische verbindingen, waarvan sommige hallucinogeen zijn. De toxiciteit van deze paddenstoel wordt vaak overschat - van aanraken zijn geen nadelige gevolgen te verwachten. Toch kan het opeten van een hele paddenstoel voor bijvoorbeeld een kleine hond in enkele uren fataal zijn.
De vliegenzwam is minder giftig dan veel mensen denken. Hij wordt al lang gebruikt door verschillende volken, onder andere in Lapland waar soms één vliegenzwam werd geruild tegen één rendier. De vliegenzwam heeft namelijk bedwelmende en hallucinogene effecten en werd vaak gebruikt in rituelen. Men kan hem vers of gedroogd opeten of roken. De hele paddenstoel bevat werkzame stoffen, maar de concentratie daarvan is het hoogst in de rode hoed. De belangrijkste werkzame stoffen in de vliegenzwam zijn muscimol, muscazone en iboteenzuur. Vliegenzwammen bevatten ook het giftige muscarine, maar als de zwammen gedroogd worden verdwijnt dit.

Fly fungi also contain the poisonous muscarine, but if the fungi are dried this will disappear.

For Six word story.
Walking around London, we came across these huge cigarette ends, dispersed on the pavement along Russell Square. Wonder how they got there!
I added some shadow and applied selective colouring, that's all I did to the picture.
We live in a helpless and endless world. The ghost hidden in the innermost corner of our heart may roam out of the masks, though often unconsciously. Maybe the spell is only a beautiful illusion, but we are not delivered. Behind the nimble smiling face is an angry heart! The charm of the magic cube lies in the fact that it could be twisted to move the inner most blocks into the surface. The surface and the inside are in a permanent opposite state, one that can never be changed, just like a spell that can never be roken. The endless absoluteness allows us to lead a calm and peaceful life. Lost as we are, we still repeat this sole, mechanical and idealist romanticism!
20.02.2002 was the date that I stopped smoking and ever since then I didn't smoke one single cigarette again.....
