This is my entry for RogueOlympics 2024 Round 6, with the topic "Verstand / Mind". The RogueOlympics are a build contest by the RogueBricks Community, with each week featuring a new topic and a part limit of just 101 pieces (which I used exactly).

I built someone dreaming up an entire world within his mind. It is in fact a direct homage to Martin Gebert and his wonderful Andarstrœm project.

Second round of the Rogueolympics2024 themed “danger”. After considering many scenes, I decided on the famous Discworld character Rincewind and his chest made of sapient pearwood. There are at least three references to danger in this scene. First, Rincewind hates danger - probably more than anything else. Second, Twoflower leads Rincewind into one dangerous situation after another. And thirdly, the chest itself is pure danger ;)

And now for something completely different, because the Rogue Olympics are back, a build contest by the RogueBricks Community, with each week featuring a new topic and a part limit of just 101 pieces. This is my entry for Round 2, with the topic "Gefahr / Peril".

I've been playing a lot of The Long Dark again lately, so I built a little homage to it. Since even when you finally find a firearm, Great Bear Island still offers enough perils that can creep up on you if you don't stay aware of your surroundings, like the eponymous bear himself. The squirrel is a bit of artistic license, since there aren't any in the game. But how can you build a nature scene without a squirrel? ;-)

This is my entry for RogueOlympics 2024 Round 4, with the topic "Balance". The RogueOlympics are a build contest by the RogueBricks Community, with each week featuring a new topic and a part limit of just 101 pieces (which I used exactly, including three Bygglek boxes from IKEA).

As a big fan of parkour one of the first things I thought about for the topic were bodily balance and control of movement. So I went back to videogames again and built an homage to Mirror's Edge, trying to capture the game's unique and clean aesthetics as much as the part limit and my limited experience with photography and image processing allowed.

This is my entry for RogueOlympics 2024 Round 3, with the topic "Volumen / Volume". The RogueOlympics are a build contest by the RogueBricks Community, with each week featuring a new topic and a part limit of just 101 pieces (I used 45, including the light fixture, technically twice).

This was a really abstract topic again, so I went with the more mathematical meaning of volume, complete with its evocations of space, 3-dimensionality, bodies and volumetric media and built something that was on my list for quite a while, a LEGO homage to the classic Cornell Box. I also added a Stanford Bunny and a Utah Teapot to the scene, for some more references to computer graphics history. And in true spirit of the Cornell Box, I added a rendering next to the real photo. But while I managed to get the scene and perspective somewhat matching, I didn't really have the time, dedication and experience with Blender and photography to match the lighting and exposure of the rendering all too closely to what my phone produced.

Next round RogueOlympics, this time it's about "balance". I came up with the idea of building an Oliphaunt whose backpack would be a reference to the topic. But since the end result became a baby Oliphaunt with a quite small basket on its back, the reference to the topic is now more the work-life balance. To integrate the kids into the parents' working world, the little orc simply has to take part in the adult business ;)

Built for round 2 of Rogue Olympics 2024 with the theme "Danger" and using 82 pieces (including the support structure). This build was a sequel to my build Risk Rat from last year's rogue olympics, which you can see here: www.flickr.com/photos/197227990@N07/52803237739/in/datepo...

This time the rat is clad in black and using a harness to attempt to steal the cheese without springing the trap.

This time the subject is "Gefahr" (danger).

First thing that came into my mind was how dangerous a vacuum cleaner is for LEGO bricks.

So, the scene can be interpreted as an autobiographical anecdote :-)

I remember playing on the floor as a small child at my Grandma's place, while she was cleaning the room and I was in fear for my treasuries.

I think that is a fear many of us have shared...

This is my entry for RogueOlympics 2024 Round 5, with the topic "Auftrieb / Uplift". The RogueOlympics are a build contest by the RogueBricks Community, with each week featuring a new topic and a part limit of just 101 pieces (which I used exactly).

I went more with the English topic description and built a rather classic motif of something that not only literally uplifts humans but also uplifts humankind into the age of space exploration. The rocket and launch tower are directly based on the NASA Saturn V, while the astronauts give the picture a more generic nature.

This time the subject is "Zuckersüß" (sickly sweet).

Thinking about what I could possibly build for this round I poked through my parts collection. I found the old printed 1x8 brick "SNACK BAR".

And since I am currently building "The Mandalorian" Vignettes, my idea was to build a snack bar in galaxy far, far away...

My contributions to the 2024 RogueOlympics, a build contest by the RogueBricks Community, with each week featuring a new topic and a part limit of just 101 pieces.

I only got 5 rounds done this year. I entered a week late and towards the end I admittedly struggled a bit to come up with builds that I was enthusiastic about. But I still enjoyed the ones I did and the Rogue Olympics remain one of my favourite events throughout the year, even if only the second best build contest now. ;-) There were a lot of new contributors again with great builds and following all the diverse little entries is as fun as contributing yourself.

I really enjoyed the two video game based builds. Although I don't really play a lot of different games nowadays, the ones I do kind of leave an impression, I guess. They also both have a rather unique aesthetic which ties in well with the Cornell Box build that I’m very attached to, both for how the concept turned out as well as how it relates to my own academic background. I'm a bit sad that I didn’t actually do a build with the Emily character from last two years, but things don’t always turn out as planned and improvisation is at the core of the Rogue Olympics afterall.

Built for Round 7 of Rogue Olympics 2024 with the theme "Chaos."

This theme made me think of a tornado, tearing up everything in its way and creating mass chaos. In this build it tears through a small farm, destroying the farmhouse and leaving only a foundation, ripping up grass and uprooting trees, breaking a fence, and even sucking up cattle.

I had a lot of fun with this tiny build, and ended under the piece limit so could probably have added more, but the tornado was hard enough to balance as is and I'm about out of time for this week :)

Photographic Equipment of a nature photographer.

Built for round 3 of Rogue Olympics 2024 with the theme "Volume" using 101 pieces.

This library contains a large volume of volumes, containing both magic and common knowledge. The bookshelf is full to the seams, and some larger books and papers lay scattered around. More papers and a map sit on a stand with a bat hanging from it, ready for reading.

I've been wanting to use chests as a bookshelf for a while now, so this gave me chance to try it out. The proportions are kind of annoying, and the handles were hard to hide, eventually ending up as decorative trim, but I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

The Chaos Chosen

His armor, black as night and adorned with blasphemous runes, is demonic war armor, forged in the flames of hell and imbued with the evil power of the Chaos Gods.

His body, once that of a mere mortal, is now an imposing figure, transformed by the warping energies of Chaos. Eyes glowing with an evil light scan the battlefield, and his limbs, of superhuman strength, are ready to unleash unimaginable violence.

Built for round 5 of Rogue Olympics with the theme "Uplift" using 80 pieces. At the end of LOTR Gandalf comes with the Eagles to "uplift" Frodo and Sam-- both physically lifting them into the sky and also mentally uplifting their spirits.

Also yet another build where I experimented with the treasure chest pieces, this time using 8.

And yes Tolkien nerds... technically it should be Gandalf the White, but this is all I had.

It shows that with a little imagination and a lot of heart, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

It's a busy a week for me this week, but I still wanted to participate, so I decided to make a diagram showing a balanced diet for my minifigures. Here is a list of what I put in each category:

Carbohydrates- croissants, pretzels, pizza (crust is carbs), noodles, fries (potatoes), and a hotdog bun.

Proteins- sausage/hot dogs, eggs, fish, and chicken/turkey

Sweets- cupcake, ice cream, popsicle, pie, and a slice of cake

Dairy- cheese, milk, and ice cream again

Fruits and Vegetables- apples, bananas, cherries, watermelon slices, grapes, carrot, beans, and lettuce

Chaos in der LEGO-Fabrik! Herrje, was ist da denn schief gegangen? Bei der Konfektionierung der neuen Minifiguren-Sammelserie sind die Teile durcheinander geraten... Das Ergebnis wirkt bizarr: etliche der kleinen Pappschachteln enthalten nun einen Baby-Astronauten, der auf einer Ziege reitet und einen Ritterschild trägt. Vollkommener Schwachsinn also, wer soll das denn kaufen? Naja, irgendein Dummer wird sich hoffentlich finden!
