A contestant concentrates on her target for the goat tie event at the Junior Rodeo Association event in Ingalls Park in Norco, California.
Sunset on Rodeo Beach, located in the Fort Cronkhite area of the Marin Headlands, one of the most special places in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area with access to multiple trails, fantastic views, a dog-friendly beach, fascinating geology, and an interesting history. As a pocket beach, Rodeo Beach sands do not migrate up or down the coast. Instead, they are carried a short distance offshore in winter, tumble about in the surf, and then return to replenish the beach in the spring and summer. Thus, the sands of Rodeo Beach are native to the Marin Headlands and reflect the Franciscan geology of the closest hills and cliffs. This earthcache focuses on the abundant radiolarian chert and rare carnelian pebbles.
Ah, bit of competition.
I bet a bale of hay that I can dislodge this one in under 10 secs.
Ooh, but you used the high back leg kick, that's cheating. I'll put this guy on the ground without even lifting my back legs!
No, No, I win, you always get more points if you can flick them over your head!
Pretty easy days work. They spent more time saddling up than riding!!
After sending her to the makeup artist and wardrobe, I set up my lights and a few silver reflectors to get the light just right.
Actually, she’s a contestant at the rodeo and she’s just sitting on her horse, watching the rodeo. The only light I have is the sun and the only reflectors are the white and silver horse trailers like the ones you see in the background. Straight out of the camera. Zero processing.

I was able to leave work early to reach Rodeo beach just in time for some really great clouds! My friend Mike and I hiked from south Rodeo at low tide and after an hour or so shooting, getting back was quite tricky since the tide had risen considerably. I was soaked when I got back to the car, but it was SO worth it.

What do you mean there’s no more rodeo until February??? I’m not sure I can last that long.

Whoa! Yes, I had to see real rodeo while I was doing the great USA trip last June. Oh boy, can't say how much I liked it. Really. This has taken place in Cody, WY. Cody Nite Rodeo at Cody Stampede to be precise. Something like this is one of the America's "must sees".
Barrel racing, love this one the most!
The anual Elks Rodeo in Santa Maria.
My first time photographing this event. It was challenging , and I gained a new appreciation for all those great rodeo images out there.
Over the years this event, with it's Elks' Queen contest, has given over 10 million dollars back to various youth groups in our community.
This rider was not a happy camper this evening. This grey horse seemed extremely explosive. He fell of after some seconds.
