Kubuswoning (Cubic Houses)
(also known as Paalwoningen - Pole Dwellings)
Overblaak 70
Rotterdam
The Netherlands
Piet Blom 1984
The original idea of these cubic houses came about in the 1970s. Piet Blom has developed a couple of these cubic houses that were built in Helmond.
The city of Rotterdam asked him to design housing on top of a pedestrian bridge and he decided to use the cubic houses idea. The concept behind these houses is that he tries to create a forest by each cube representing an abstract tree; therefore the whole village becomes a forest.
The cubes are tilted and sit on hexagon-shaped pole structures. The cubes contain the living areas, which are split into three levels. The triangle-shaped lower level contains the living area. The windows on this level open onto the environment below due to the slope of the tilted cube. The middle level contains the sleeping area and a bathroom, while the top level, also in a triangular shape, is used as either an extra bedroom or a living space. The top level provides a great view since the apex of the room is a three sided pyramid with windows all around.
The pole below some of the cubes allow for storage space as well as the staircase that leads to the entrance, while others have shops on the promenade level.
The structure of the pole consists of three concrete pillars that have concrete block filling the space in between. As for the cube, the basic structure is concrete floor with concrete pillars. On top of this structure is something similar to a typical wood frame structure with wood stud framing and rockwool insulation. To protect the wooden frame and the insulation from exposure to the elements, they are covered with cement/wood fiberboards. To give the cube a nice appearance, zinc panels were used and complemented by double-glazed windows.

A morning shoot at Ratcliffe Power Station gave me the chance to meet up with one of my first flickr contacts, Steve Cole (Captain Nikon). Not quite sure what he thought when he turned up to find me pushing a bag of discarded rockwool down the road, I had found it in the bushes and it was perfect to stand on to let me view over the bridge wall to get this shot.
Guardo meglio, sta entrando qualcosa in stazione. Monto in macchina, mi posiziono lungo linea.

The legal company name is Per Sørensen Gedsted, but the "Gedsted" part is omitted on the trucks. For positive id, look instead for the town-name "Møldrup" - this is important, since Per Sørensen is a very common name used for several companies in many different fields.
Going up the steep hill leading sw out of Aarhus past Viby and Stautrup. Underpowered and/or heavily loaded trucks often struggle here.
Tip: to locate trucks of particular interest to you, check my collections page, "truck collection" (www.flickr.com/photos/lavulv/collections/72157684190396672/ ) - here you will find all trucks organized in albums, by haulier (with zip-codes), year, brand and country.
Retirement age for trucks: many used trucks are offered for sale on international markets. If sold to a foreign buyer, this will not be listed in the danish motor registry, so a "retired" truck may or may not have been exported. In other words, the "retirement age" only shows the age, at which the truck stopped running on danish license plates.

An abandoned industrial chimney labeled “Rockwool” towers over former factory buildings along a canal in Hiltrup, Münster, Germany. Once part of an active industrial site, the location now stands silent, surrounded by bare winter trees and calm water.

Cute little blue locomotive just sits abandoned. I think it hauled waste from the old Rockwool factory that closed down sometime in about the 1960s. www.american-rails.com/9227.html
A photo I created for a local protest group, Happy Tuesday everyone!! I will be busy with this group and will be off and on for a while.
