The Romanesque Revival Style commercial structure was completed in 1892. The Roman arched windows, horizontal belt courses and the rounded turrets identify it as Romanesque Revival. It honors Judge William Brown, a pioneer of Rockford.

"This Second Empire style residence is associated with two prominent residents. Wadsworth G. Wheelock was a local crockery manufacturer. He died in 1897. George Sutherland, who resided here 1898-1935, was a lawyer and President of Bower City Bank. The house has a slate covered mansard roof, and is constructed of cream brick burned in Edgerton. In addition to the mansard roof-there are few in Janesville- Second Empire features include a projecting central entry pavilion with an elegant portico, and heavy limestone window surrounds. Decorative moldings, including a rope molding on the curved pediment of the porch, were used extensively."

This is one of my favorites. It has such mood and atmosphere. It was taken at Happy Hollow Park in Janesville, Wisconsin,USA (Rock County). Reflections from the edge of the Rock River.

Beckman Mill - Rock County Park, Beloit, WI, USA

My favorite shot. The frost makes the scene look absolutely magical. The blue sky and morning sunlight were perfect. Taken at Beckman Mill, a Rock County Park, Beloit, WI, USA.

This could be my favorite shot of 2018. Beckman Mill Park is full of beautiful nature and wildlife, plus has a rich local history. Several community activities are held here each year plus it is a favorite spot for Senior photos and Prom Pictures.

The dam, the mill house and surrounding buildings have been restored and have rich historical value.

My trip on 12/10/18.

The elaborate auditorium of the theatre is designed according to the atmospheric style which was popular in movie houses built in the 1920s. This style simulates an outdoor theater-going experience. The Coronado's auditorium walls are decorated with the facades of gilded Spanish and Italian-style buildings, and the ceiling looks like a deep blue sky filled with twinkling stars and floating clouds. The auditorium is full of gilded detail.

The Kent block is attached to its companion apartment building on Court St. by walkways with metal railings. Records indicate that this apartment building may have been built several years later than the actual Kent Block, although not later

than 1900. Although the front facade of the apartment block is faced with red brick like that of the Kent Block, the side walls are constructed of cream brick. There is a pressed metal cornice at the top of the building that features brackets, modillions, dentils, and swags. A brick corbelled frieze runs under the cornice. Two sets of two-story oriel bays decorate the upper stories. They are covered by pressed metal in a manner similar to those of the Kent Block. Windows are single light double hung sashes except for those between the bays. There are two round arched windows there that are decorated with segmentally arched lintels and stone sills. A stone belt course runs across the front facade of the building separating the first and upper floors. The first floor features simple entrances and windows.

Both the Kent Block and its companion apartment building housed many flats. The flats of the commercial block were called the LaVista Flats, while those on Court St. were known as the Court Street Flats. The businesses housed in first floor of the Kent Block itself included grocery stores until 1911 and the Janesville Floral Company until 1924 when they presumably moved to their new quarters south of this building. The building currently houses apartments and an office supply store.

Feeling like using alliteration in this title.

Allen P. Lovejoy (1825-1904), who arrived in Janesville in 1850, was president of the Harris Machine Company, the parent firm of Janesville Machine which was later sold to General Motors. His picturesque cream brick and frame house was originally painted in the dark polychrome colors characteristic of early Queen Anne style houses. Ornamental detail includes paneling, shingles, and siding combined in the main gable; bargeboards and brackets are decorated with tooled motifs.

The New Vision Cooperative facility in Hills, Minnesota has an SD9 that looks very much at home next to the BNSF Marshall Subdivision. This unit started out its like with the CBQ before working for the BN and eventually BNSF with an intermediate stop at NRE in Silvis, Illinois. Nice to see it's at home in Hills in Minnesota's southwestern corner.

The building pictured above has a long history with the YMCA in Rockford. It is located at 220 East State Street in Rockford, IL. Even though the YMCA of Rock River Valley does not currently occupy the building, the stones above the doorway will always read YMCA.

Rockford, Illinois was first settled around 1834. As Rockford grew, the east side of the Rock River developed into a commercial district, featuring the post office and the first two hotels. State Street, which runs through the district, became an important transportation corridor between Belvidere and Galena. The first bridge in Rockford was built on State Street across the river in 1852; it was the only crossing until 1890. Also that year, the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad reached the east side of Rockford, built along the eastern riverfront, providing economic stimulus. By 1860, the entirety of State Street from the tracks to Second Street was commercial development. The commercial building at 324–30 East State Street is the lone remnant from this era that has not been substantially altered

“Before water generates steam, it must register two hundred and twelve degrees of heat. Two hundred degrees will not do it; two hundred and ten will not do it. The water must boil before it will generate enough steam to move an engine, to run a train. Lukewarm water will not run anything."
