It was shot through a windscreen on a very hot day in Lanzarote last year. Thought at the time it had shades of an Eagles album cover in colour. Then I bought a copy of Robert Franks "The Americans" which is an amazing collection of photos of the unseen America of the 50's & found a Black & White image which has shades of this. Couldn't help myself converting it to B&W and adding a wee bit noise....

In March of this year I was in NYC photographing graffiti and met with a friend who gave me his usual great "Tour" this time it was NYC. We walked past Robert Frank's address in the Bowery and as we talked there was Robert Frank looking out the window. It made me think of some of his work showing people looking out a window onto the street. I lifted my camera and took a shot. Seconds later he was gone, no second shot. I thought that was as it should be.

"Robert Frank would have turned 100 years old in 2024. To mark this birthday, Museum Folkwang is showing 34 photographs and selected documents on the history of the collection and exhibitions in the presentation Be Happy from 23 August 2024 to 5 January 2025."
Happy Smile on Saturday! ;o)
I found this challenge difficult. Create a still life with one book, one candle and one flower. OK so far, but here's the kicker: "add one "crazy object" of your choice to it which does not fit the still life". I tried several ideas and finally decided on a pair of baby's boots. Afterwards it struck me that I could make a link with the book, at least in the title ..... but I hope it still raises a smile!

Documentary photographer Robert Frank passed away last week at the age of 94.
I am fascinated by his style. This 'in camera' double exposure, a tribute to his brilliance.
" When I first looked at Walker Evans’ photographs, I thought of something Malraux wrote: “To transform destiny into awareness.” One is embarrassed to want so much for oneself. But, how else are you going to justify your failure and your effort?"
—Robert Frank
I don't do street photography but I just had to grab a quick shot of this scene. I came across this scene and it looked as if it came out of Fred Herzog, or Robert Frank, or William Eggleston's world. This photo reflects the stress of operating a small business during the COVID19 pandemic.
Humbled to have had this photo selected by the editor's of lensculture for their curated gallery of 2021 Street Photography Competition: www.lensculture.com/event_submissions/1301047

"The Europeans" tram tribute version on film in 2018
Recently, I went to the Art Institute and saw the Robert Frank exhibit celebrating his collection of photos entitled The Americans and it inspired me to think about what a modern day collection of Americans might look like as I feel we are a country that is constantly evolving. Of course, America is a diverse and also strange place with many different kinds of cultures and people coming together. And, hopefully we'll all survive Trump's presidency and we'll keep our national identity-which is one of diversity. There are some so called white nationalists who continue to buy into the mass marketed idea of not only the "American Dream" but of the concept of a "real American," meaning someone who is white like them. That doesn't leave any room for insight, growth, or empathy. The American Dream will never truly be realized until we embrace each other. Who cares about a house, kids, and two cars if you can't trust your neighbor because you are filled with hate and ignorance? That sounds like a nightmare to me.
I want to show you some examples of Americans. This little girl seemed like a good place to start.

Everyone knows that Parachute Drop tower looks like, but I don't know many who ever saw it in use.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

P.S. - If you squint* you can see Emerson’s rock in this photograph.
To wit:
The rock cannot be broken. It is the truth.
It rises from land and sea and covers them.
It is a mountain half-way green and then,
The other immeasurable half, such rock
As placid air becomes. But it is not
A hermit’s truth nor symbol in hermitage.
It is the visible rock, the audible,
The brilliant mercy of a sure repose,
On this present ground, the vividest repose,
Things certain sustaining us in certainty.
from Wallace Stevens, CREDENCES OF SUMMER
*Note: Your squint may, or may not be, metaphorical.
Very quietly now the eyes go out of business
Dido refuses to write
Everyone is growing stronger from the load of empty pictures.
– David Shapiro

In the style of Ilse Bing (1 of 4)
Im a huge fan of the photographic work of Robert Frank and especially of the book The Americans.
I captured this image on the streets of Bath and in my mind I knew it imitated the look of Robert Franks vision.

Shot for Week 19 of my "52 Weeks of 2022" flickr group project given the theme "In the style of Robert Frank".
Another great theme. Robert Frank was a Swedish guy that came to the US in his 20s and took pictures all around the country. I sum up his work as very personal images that show the "other" side of life in the US that debunked the traditional view that it is a place made up of millionaires and celebrities.
One "reality" we are dealing with today is the profound number of businesses that are struggling or gone because people don't want to go to work. Politics aside, it's a real problem.
The "Help Wanted" sign in front of the long line of people waiting to be served at the most famous "hot dog" joint in our area struck me as a good example of the situation.

On the day that Robert Frank leaves us, my photo of the day has to include a flag.
That I took thinking of Robert Frank, because it had a flag, before I knew of his passing speaks volumes of his gigantic and ever-lasting shadow.
Never has 'not worthy' been more aptly applied to a photograph I post.
