This section of coast along the famous Road to Hana is distinguished by rocky lava flows. Island of Maui, Hawaii

The rugged, colorful, windswept, eastern Maui Coastline....at Ke’anae Lookout.

The Ke'anae Peninsula is surrounded by dark jagged lava that serves as a vivid reminder of the ancient flows from Haleakala that formed the Island of Maui itself. Hala trees along the shore are the only plant that can get a grip on this gnarled coastline.

From a Distance..........the view is that of the Kipahulu Forest Reserve, as it makes it way down the Southern slope of Haleakala. The runoff from Haleakala has created this beautiful, huge and lush rain forest that encompasses most of Maui’s eastern and south eastern shore line, from the summit freeze line to the sea.

( ....and yes it does freeze often at night at the summit....)

Haleakala is 10,023 feet above sea level..

Haleakala is taller than Mount Everest by about about 674 feet when you consider that there is an additional 19,680 feet of the volcano hidden under the ocean, and 10,023 feet above sea level.....for a total height of 29703 feet..

Mount Everest measures 29029 feet above sea level.

I adore blue flowers. I photographed this blue jade during my visit to the wonderful "Garden of Eden." Blue jade is uncommon on Maui. I do not know very much about Maui's floral history, but I get the impression that this flower had been more common in the past. Sometimes, I run across bits of jade growing in old, overgrown areas and gardens. However, there is a nice specimen growing at the Garden of Eden. The photo was taken in March 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

Stumbled across this scene on our hike off the road to Hana and I knew we had found paradise. The flower in the foreground is from an African Tulip Tree which were growing all around us.

"Rainbow Eucalyptus Tree Blur" by Patti Deters. The beauty of the bright and multi-colored outer bark of the Rainbow Eucalyptus Tree is evident in this vertical close-up abstract blur. The orange, green, and tan colors are vibrant yet natural colors for this tree, also known as Eucalyptus Deglupta, Mindanao Gum, or Rainbow gum tree. This particular tree was found in Hawaii, on Maui on the Road To Hana. Though beautiful to look at and with a wonderful smell, these trees are fast-growing and invasive. Taken at Ku'Au Beach, Maui. This is one of the local beaches in the town of Paia on the windward side of Maui. This is where the road to Hana begins....Now back to opening my new Canon 40D!! :)

Ho'okipa Beach Park, Maui

It took me forever to find the name of this waterfall. I was lucky enough to be brought here during a photo workshop on Maui. I truly love these hidden waterfalls that very few know how to find. Definitely worth the experience with a local.

January tends to be one of the worst months in the Pacific Northwest. And the start of this year was no exception, with the region experiencing 30 days of continuous rain. Rivers became swollen, creeks water-logged, trails slushy, and the mood sour. It was a sign to spend time indoors, reconnect with friends and family, grab a few drinks, and go through my archives.

It was certainly the lousy weather that inspired me to look at the photos of Hawaii, where, in one single day, you could go from barren moonscapes to a sunny beach to lush rainforests to graceful sunset. I still miss the days I spent driving between through those diverse climes and eagerly looking forward to the next vista.

Twin Falls, on the Road to Hana.

Between the town of Paia and Huelo, at the intersection of Route 400, the road changes from Highway 36 to Highway 360 and the mile markers start over again at zero.
